| Thebhoy's Top 32 Albums Of 2009
Because you've all been eaglerly anticipating this and arbitrary numbers are way better then 10's or 5's. | | 1 | | Do Make Say Think Other Truths
Oh boy what can I say. I might have predicted this considering the band is as dependable as you can get. Streetlight's review says all that needs to be said. Fantastic. | | 2 | | Andrew Bird Noble Beast
Criminally overlooked this year, Noble Beast is easy to brush off as boring, or treading water. The violin, Oh, the violin! Incredibly melodic and natural sounding, this album is chock full of beautiful moments. Listen again and again and you start to see the working parts that make it great. I mean, people hated Madame Bovary when it came out. | | 3 | | maudlin of the Well Part the Second
See: review. | | 4 | | Charles Spearin The Happiness Project
See: review | | 5 | | Built to Spill There is No Enemy
See: review | | 6 | | Grizzly Bear Veckatimest
Great vocal work and simple, but deceptively complex songwriting that is layered with intricate details. Beautiful. | | 7 | | Sunset Rubdown Dragonslayer
See: review | | 8 | | Japandroids Post-Nothing
If you don't like this record, you fucking suck. | | 9 | | Bill Frisell Disfarmer
See: review | | 10 | | Cymbals Eat Guitars Why There Are Mountains
From the opening line of "And the Hazy Sea", you know right away this mix of Modest Mouse and... other indie bands, is going to be an ass-kicker of an album. | | 11 | | Kiss Kiss The Meek Shall Inherit What's Left
Adam Downer's other non-post-rock attempt at creating hype that wasn't shitty Yonlu. Virus is awesome possum. | | 12 | | Fever Ray Fever Ray
Bat for Lashes but darker and slightly better. | | 13 | | The Antlers Hospice
Well the melodies are delicious and it's the little moments, like the bass kick in Wake during the verses, that make this record shine. | | 14 | | Mew No More Stories Were Told Today...
lol silly title. | | 15 | | Isis Wavering Radiant
See: review | | 16 | | St. Vincent Actor
The second half begins to drag a bit, but goddam this one has some good tunes. An inherent sense of melody and when to take things just that slightly different route are what make this record great. | | 17 | | Mono Hymn to the Immortal Wind
This has dropped considerably in favour with me. Having said that, this is formulaic post-rock done absolutely right. Gorgeous. | | 18 | | Bat for Lashes Two Suns
Like Fever Ray, but lighter and slightly less good. | | 19 | | Raekwon Only Built for Cuban Lynx Pt. II
Hippity-hoppity, this shit's poppity.... yeah, I don't listen to hip-hop all that often. | | 20 | | Yo La Tengo Popular Songs
See: review | | 21 | | Noah and the Whale The First Days of Spring
more like Noah and the Waior | | 22 | | Various Artists Dark Was the Night
Indie elites make what is the best compilation I'VE ever heard. Would be higher but it isn't really a proper album per se. | | 23 | | fun. Aim and Ignite
I hope you're happy Strikey | | 24 | | The Flaming Lips Embryonic
Holy shit a little too psychedelic for its own good at times, but Jesus some great bass and drum work. Now, if I can only take Karen O's voice out of If I were a Frog, or whatever the hell it's called. | | 25 | | Dirty Projectors Bitte Orca
Grew off me considerably, but damn there's some good stuff on here for sure. Eclectic and sometimes just down right strange in a way only hipsters find cool. But none the less this is a really solid release. | | 26 | | Phoenix Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
See: review. (I'm hope you're happy Klap) | | 27 | | The Dodos Time to Die
No, it is not as good as Visiter, but this is a very good follow up record from the now threesome. Consistently good, there is enough of the ol' sing-a-long catchiness that makes the Dodos who they are. | | 28 | | Camera Obscura My Maudlin Career
Sometimes just too sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. However there is no denying the sunny fun of this record. | | 29 | | The Decemberists The Hazards of Love
See: review | | 30 | | Bon Iver Blood Bank
That forgotten EP from the beginning of the year. | | 31 | | Lightning Dust Infinite Light
See: review. | | 32 | | The Pains of Being Pure at Heart The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
noisy and derivative, but still a lot of fun. | |

12.04.09 | Tis been a good year for music. Here's what I missed out on:
Manchester Orchestra - Mean Eveything to Nothing
P.O.S. - Never Better
Gavin Castleton - Home
Silversun Pickups - Swoon (which wasn't that great from what I heard from it tbh) | Inveigh
12.04.09 | definitely get on Never Better with the quickness -- amazing album. Although not as good as Audition was in my opinion.
Also check out Poison the Well's newest if you haven't yet. good list, from what I've heard on it at least. | thebhoy
12.04.09 | Poison the Well don't sound like my bag, but I guess I should give them a try. Fisherfreak, get on some this, you're new and a lot of these are quite popular at Sputnik... others aren't, but yeah. | klap
12.04.09 | 32 is a random number lol
and yes i'm proud of you for phoenix, although it's standing at a mere 26 is a SHAM | Inveigh
12.04.09 | word man, I just took a look at your ratings and I'm not sure if you'd dig them or not -- but the fact that you like At the Drive-In and old Avenged Sevenfold means there's a chance I suppose.
If you're going to check them out, I definitely think you'd like The Tropic Rot more than anything else by them.. it's got a bit of a Deftones-ish vibe to it... I dunno. But that and P.O.S.'s Never Better are probably my two albums of the year. | thebhoy
12.04.09 |
and yes i'm proud of you for phoenix, although it's standing at a mere 26 is a SHAM
I just have a heard time getting through the whole record. After Love Like a Sunset Pt. 2 I start to lose interest, even though the rest of the record is good, it's no different then the front half.
@inveigh: word, AtDI are cool beans. Waking the Fallen was a decent record but I only heard it because my brother loves AV7X, so it's not like I listen to it a consisten basis, but I'll give it a shot. | klap
12.04.09 | ironically, one of those 2nd-half phoenix songs is my song of the year | thebhoy
12.04.09 | fuck, my list got kicked off already by other shitty lists? Dammit to hell! what a waste of time. | klap
12.04.09 | lol the best time to post shit is around 9pm PST | thebhoy
12.04.09 | eff you EST | Electric City
12.04.09 | lol yonlu is good you fuckers but you are correct, Kiss Kiss is better | Yotimi
12.04.09 | Good list, although I don't think12 and 18 sound that much alike. | Kiran
12.04.09 | good call on fever ray and god damnit ive been meaning to get that charles spearin album for like 7 months | thebhoy
12.04.09 | Kirgams, wtf get it now.
Yotimi... yeah I know, they are in the same vein though, but they are different. | Yotimi
12.04.09 | Also, since you like Fever Ray, I'm assuming you like The Knife then? Cause her work with The Knife is way better (even though FR is great too) | thebhoy
12.04.09 | I actually haven't listened to The Knife yet. I really should, I only picked up Fever Ray on a whim after seeing one of her music videos and being like, "this fucking sweet". Been meaning to get Silent Shout. | Kiran
12.04.09 | The Knife is better and I'm saying that having loved Fever Ray | thebhoy
12.04.09 | acquiring now. | ECRbubs
12.20.09 | Swoon is really good imo. | thebhoy
12.20.09 | I've never been big on Silversun Pickups, Swoon was okay but I feel I need to listen to it more. Also, I just got The XX album, and it sounds like it would fit somewhere on this list as well. |
