Death Metal In 09 So Far
A sort of overview of all the death metal this year so far. Tell me if I?m leaving anything out. |
1 | | Top 10 albums so far
followed by some other good albums followed by some average albums followed by some bad albums |
2 | | Ulcerate Everything is Fire
Probably going to be album of the year for me; nothing I say about the album can do it any justice at all. It?s a very dense listen though, and for most, will probably take some time to grow. Totally worth it though because the album is easily one of the best death metal albums I?ve ever heard. The drumming is especially awe-inspiring. Really atmospheric. |
3 | | Despondency Revelation IV (Rise of the Nemesis)
Slammy-technical brutal death metal with some really great riffing. I see them as a less-insane Defeated Sanity. Really enjoyable if you?re into brutal stuff. |
4 | | Fleshgod Apocalypse Oracles
The more popular choice for the most significant death metal album this year so far (and most accessible). Pretty one-dimensional considering its ambitious nature, not necessarily detriment to the music though as its still highly enjoyable. The classical influences are a bit forced (especially the interludes), and the production kinda bothers me but it was pretty mind-blowing in some spots, too bad the album wore off pretty fast. Wonderful vocals too. |
5 | | Revolting Dreadful Pleasures
Great Swedish old school death metal in vein of Dismember or the like, some great riffs scattered throughout and just overall really fun. |
6 | | Abysmal Torment Omnicide
Brutal death metal with cleaned up production this time around, some great, fun riffing, slightly annoying vocals (pig squealy at times), the drum sound is a bit off too |
7 | | Psoriasis Lethal Treatment
All over the map in terms of influence, the strongest being the jazziness that the French death metal scene has been known for lately. Really varied stuff all while retaining a constant sound, impressive feat to me. Fans of Gorod might be pleased with these guys. |
8 | | Horrific Your Worst Nightmare
A fun one-man heavy metal/death metal hybrid from the legendary Razorback records. |
9 | | Funebrarum The Sleep of Morbid Dreams
Long awaited follow-up to their more than well-received debut delivers. |
10 | | Bloodsoaked Sadistic Deeds...Grotesque Memories
One-man band who plays very straightforward old school death metal with a bit of a brutal death metal touch. |
11 | | Cannibal Corpse Evisceration Plague
The drumming and vocals are still pretty much the same as every other album they?ve released (the corpsegrinder albums for the vocals obviously) but the guitars tend to flirt a bit more with technicality (which they?ve been experimenting with more obviously their past few albums) and the solos have a more modern feel to them (Necrophagist soloing craze). All-in-all the riffing didn?t impress me as much as it does on some of their other albums but it?s still solid. |
12 | | Tribulation The Horror
Pretty good Swedish old school death/thrash with fairly abundant (and ftmp well done) soloing. |
13 | | General Surgery Corpus in Extremis: Analysing Necrocriticism
Really solid goregrind in vein of early Carcass. |
14 | | Egemony Baptism of the Unborn
Fairly solid Italian brutal death metal but a bit unsatisfying. |
15 | | Fondlecorpse Creaturegore
Long-awaited debut full-length is really great at times but suffers a bit from inconsistency. |
16 | | Led Astray In Ways Unforeseen
Well executed but really unmemorable (slightly) technical death metal, some pretty good riff ideas throughout |
17 | | Female Nose Breaker A Crash Course in Brute Romance
Brutal/slamming death metal EP that?s pretty decent but has really annoying sampling. |
18 | | Beheading Machine Stillbirth Civilisation
Decapitated meets Beneath the Massacre, EP |
19 | | Mental Demise Final Step to Future Madness
Decent brutal death/grind |
20 | | Dominance Echoes of Human Decay
Solid Italian technical death that kinda just drags on and on. |
21 | | Trepalium XIII
Really groovy/jazzy French death metal, similar to countrymates Gorod in their style but not so much their execution. I think I hear a bit of Meshuggah influence as well. |
22 | | Centaurus-A Side Effects Expected
A pretty great technical death metal outfit that came out of no where, promising band, should probably change their name though. |
23 | | Cattle Decapitation The Harvest Floor
Impressive album considering I wasn?t very impressed by what else I?d heard from them, fairly chaotic stuff. |
24 | | Criminal White Hell
Solid death/thrash but nothing more. |
25 | | Cerebral Incubation Asphyxiating on Excrement
Pretty good slam, very short in length though when taking all the sampling out of consideration. |
26 | | Pestilence Resurrection Macabre
Re album was less-than satisfying. |
27 | | Obscura Cosmogenesis
Pretty fun listen, but its all been done before (which normally isn?t a problem for me, but in this case it is?) |
28 | | Vomepotro Liturgy of Dissection
Solid brutal death metal similar to Guttural Secrete |
29 | | Napalm Death Time Waits For No Slave
Good, I wasn?t too impressed however |
30 | | Heinous Killings/Necrotic Disgorgement Split CD
Great 4 song brutal death metal split. Only 1 ND song though (the better of the two bands) |
31 | | Unanimated In the Light of Darkness
First album in 14 years, good Swedish melodeath, too melodic for me at times though |
32 | | Infinite Defilement Disgorging Humanity
Solid one-man slamming brutal death metal from Australia. Dexter fans will recognize two samples from the show featured on the album. |
33 | | Tools of Torture Faith - Purification - Execution
More solid brutal death |
34 | | Stuff that isn't terrible but isn't that good |
35 | | Heaps of Dead Deceased Dismembered and Left to Decay |
36 | | Torture Killer Sewers |
37 | | Cropment Dead Soil |
38 | | Konkhra Nothing is Sacred |
39 | | Nebukadnezar Dawn Pervades the Twilight |
40 | | Seance Awakening of the Gods |
41 | | Success Will Write Apocalypse Across... The Grand Partition & the Abrogation of Idolatry |
42 | | Tardy Brothers Bloodline |
43 | | Waco Jesus Sex Drugs & Death Metal |
44 | | Woe of Tyrants Kingdom of Might |
45 | | Thanatos Justified Genocide |
46 | | Blastomycosis The Putrid Smell Within |
47 | | Wretched The Exodus of Autonomy |
48 | | Autopsy Horrific Obsession |
49 | | Havok Being and Nothingness |
50 | | Mechanism Inspired Horrific |
51 | | Ignominious Incarceration Of Winter Born |
52 | | Empty Grace Subterranean Soul's March |
53 | | Axis Powers Marching Towards Destruction |
54 | | Trigger the Bloodshed The Great Depression |
55 | | Gory Blister Graveyard of Angels |
56 | | Denial Catacombs of the Grotesque |
57 | | God Dethroned Passiondale |
58 | | Paganizer Scandinavian Warmachine |
59 | | Ribspreader Opus Ribcage |
60 | | AVOID at all costs |
61 | | Malebolgia Requiem For the Inexorable |
62 | | Inevitable End The Severed Inception |
63 | | Daggerspawn Suffering Upon the Throne of Depravity |
64 | | The Burning Rewakening |
65 | | Coram Lethe ...A Splendid Chaos |
66 | | Viraemia Viraemia
though if you enjoy ridiculous over the top wank, you will most likely find enjoyment with this |
67 | | Hiroshima Will Burn To The Weight of All Things |
68 | | Krig Target: Human, Mission: Destroy |
69 | | Disfiguring the Goddess Disfiguring the Goddess
lol |
70 | | Lots of great stuff on the way |
