Mendigo
02.16.09 | cool stuff as far as I know these (which are most of them except 3, 8, 13, 15 &16)
seriously needs some Charles Mingus (The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is my favorite jazz album), Ornette Coleman, more John Zorn Bands (Bar Kokhba, Masada, PainKiller,...) and Thelonious Monk.
btw, I'm just listening to Bohren's Midnight Radio, which is even more sparse and gloomy than their later works.
and I've recently been digging John Zorn's 50th Birthday Celebration series, especially the Bar Kokhba concerts are wonderful. |

02.16.09 | I really need to get Midnight Radio, and I should have added a Bar Kokhba album. Haven't got any Charles Mingus or Coleman, appalingly.
You'd probably like 3 a lot as a Bohren fan. I think they were strongly influenced by Angelo Badalamenti who composed 3. Not really that album in particular, but it's the best one. |

02.16.09 | Nah, it's by Angelo Badalamenti. He composed all the music on 3 too, Julee Cruise just sings.
I never knew Fantomas played it, that version is incredible.. I need to listen to them more. |

02.16.09 | Howard Moon: I'm driving, it's my music we're having.
Vince Noir: Not Jazz!
Howard Moon: [lifts cassette] No. This my friend is Jazz Funk.
Vince Noir: Oh. The double? That's even worse!
Howard Moon: The mixture. The cerebral musicality of Jazz mixed with the visceral groove of funk.
Vince Noir: Funk?
Howard Moon: Imagine that.
Vince Noir: Funk?
Howard Moon: What a combo.
Vince Noir: Jazz' deformed cousin!
Damn, I remind myself of Howard Moon far too much =( |

02.16.09 | Howard : always thought I'd fade away to some slap bass... but I dont suppose that's a style of music you're familiar with.
Hitcher : I beg your pardon, I'm one of the leading exponents of the jazz funk movement, I'm the slap bass president for gods sake. It used to be Mark King, but we had a thumb duel, and I smashed him to the ground like a blond tent peg.
You love it you slaaaggggsss!!!
Can you feel the funk? |

02.16.09 | I need to listen to John Zorn, I think? Listen to Mendigo, all solid recs. ALSO, I need Kind of Blue, but if you like that, probably check out In A Silent Way, by Davis, it's the bridge between his older stuff and the more experimental fusion stuff.
I'm also real interested in listening to some Bohren & Der Club of Gore, they seem interesting. |
