Memento's Favourite Black Metal - Top 10
Since I have recently started a more expansive deep dive (than hitherto undertaken) into the murky depths of black metal with a view, specifically, to its more 'avant-gardistic', 'progressive', and 'dissonant' edges, based on an extensive listening list part of which I have outlind on this website, I thought I would assemble this provisional top ten of some of my favourite black metal artists (one album per artist). Emphasis on the provisional as this is a genre with which I am considerably less familiar than, say, death metal (for which I made a complementary favourites list a few days ago). I made this list, in part, as a point of comparison for after I have gone through my current playlist in full.
Note: I have a massive bias, much like with death metal, towards the more strange, progressive, technical, and 'dissonant', sides of the genre (so you are unlikely to find a lot of, if any, more straightforward old school black metal on this list). |
