| On Eidolons
An eidolon is the shape or form that a Ghost (or apparition) takes. As defined by Wikipedia, an eidolon is "a spirit-image of a living or dead person; a shade or phantom look-alike of the human form". My thoughts on Eidolons (predominantly deceased) are as follows. | | 1 | | Rishloo Eidolon
After many years of thought, have finally realized what seeing the form of a ghost is like. Was sitting in my living room the other day, and the timing was perfect. The sun's light was shining through my window, extending from the window to a beige white painted wall (40 feet away), and dancing on the wall. It struck me then, that seeing a ghost is akin to seeing this light (from a windowpane) dancing on the wall. Like the windowpane, ghosts exist in a separate visual spectrum or dimension. And the ability to see a ghost, to truly see a ghost's form, is up to perfect timing. Additional thoughts follow. | | 2 | | Red Fang Only Ghosts
I tend to believe that ghosts exist within the same dimension as us, the living, but are outside of or on the fringe of our visible spectrum. Apparently, our visible spectrum that we can perceive (from 400 nm to 700 nm, with most sensitivity to 555 nm [yellow-green]) is only a small fraction of that within the total electromagnetic spectrum (e.g., radio waves, UV, x-rays, gamma rays, infrared, microwaves, etc.). That said, I have also found that ghosts are most visible, if visible, in nighttime hours. | | 3 | | Voyager Ghost Mile
From what I have seen, all at nighttime hours, eidolon forms are not always complete. I have seen a full body apparition at the foot of my bed, most likely able to show such a form as feeding on my bioenergy. But have also seen just a hand coming down on me, in an experience in an old cabin in North Georgia mountains. And have seen a ghost as more of a transitory object, moving disjointedly across the porch of a house in north Alabama. At the lowest energy form, a ghost likely appears as an orb of low-grade energy; have seen this form a couple of times, most vividly at a nighttime ghost tour in New Orleans. | | 4 | | Opeth Ghost Reveries
Having seen a full body apparition, I believe that such a form (full projection) is typically static. For example, not moving and not talking. However, it is important to note that this full body ghost was dressed - most likely her residual image. And that she was stern - could make out her facial features enough to note this expression. As noted prior, this ghost was at the foot of my bed. In my surprise and freight, I kicked through the ghost, with my right leg/foot (from left to right), and she (her image) dissipated with the force of my kick/wind. | | 5 | | Switched Ghosts in the Machine
Have seen many Hollywood visuals of eidolons and ghosts, and they rarely get it right. The full body projection I witnessed was detailed; it was quite apparent that she was an older woman with grey hair. However, her body was light blue-whitish and nearly transparent. Her body was not nearly as vivid or colored as the living (as Hollywood likes to show ghosts) or as energetically radiant (as recent Ghostbusters movies). | | 6 | | Collide Chasing the Ghost
As noted above, a full projection can occur outside the mind. Believe this is most often experienced in the transition between asleep and waking (sleep inertia), when the mind is shortly outside of the sleep or dream state, and reaching cognition. However, as to be the subject of another list, have also found that Eidolons and ghosts can occur inside your mind; for example, within a dream. | | 7 | | Kamelot One Cold Winter's Night
See comment below from unclereich. The shadow form (no distinguishable features other than shadow and human form). Personally, I have not witnessed this form; but I am not the only one in my family that has seen ghosts. My oldest two sons, when they were young, were sensitive. My middle son observed a shadow form in his room - and has slept with his closet light on ever since. My oldest son has experienced sleep paralysis multiple times, for about 30 seconds each, where a shadow form demon with red eyes is staring back at him, accompanied with a train-like roaring sound - only leaving when he regains the ability to move. | | 8 | | Ghost (SWE) If You Have Ghost
My oldest son also witnessed an interesting ghost form in his room. A ghost with deteriorated residual image. The ghost had distinguishable human form, but was humming to my son and had an indistinguishable face. As if the ghost was so long deceased that it could no linger recall its facial features. Kinda like the The Lady of the Lake in the Haunting of Bly Manor. Although it scared him, my son sensed no menace from this ghost. | |

05.04.25 | Some say that cats and/or dogs can see or sense ghosts. Interesting to note that a cat's vision is attuned to blue and green (less colors), sees more grey than rich colors, and can see much better in the dark. Some also say that cats can see down to the UV range (below 400 nm). Dogs see within the violet to blue-violet range, from 430 to 475 nm. If this is the case, than the eidolon could exist within the lower light spectrum between 100 (UV) to 450 nm. Of note, light bluish white exists in the range of 450 to 495 nm - and bodily fluids can fluoresce light bluish white under UV light. | arthropod
05.04.25 | Now that's an interesting list. Much appreciation for considering the physical and psychological aspects of those phenomena (let's say I have a fictional story in the works, so I find such insights greatly useful).
What would you say about the concept of cold spots? Could ghosts induce significant temperature changes, if any? | artificialbox
05.04.25 | I only know about Eidolons through reading Gene Wolfe’s books, where they are basically apparitions that are projected from our minds and exist in physical reality as any regular person would despite not really being human. I guess there are multiple spins on the idea. Really interesting to think about! | JDubb
05.04.25 | @arthropod, I should have noted why I awoke to a ghost at the foot of my bed. I was sleeping on my back outside of the covers. And I awoke to my feet absolutely f’n freezing, where the ghost was standing. So yes, I believe ghosts can affect bodily temperature of the living at a minimum. And believe she was pulling my bio energy to be able to facilitate a full body projection. | Hawks
05.04.25 | What a list brother. I've had experiences with ghosts also. First when I was probably 5 years old. Remember it like it was yesterday. Woke up in the middle of the night/early morning (almost 30 years ago, give me a break) and saw a full body apparition also of an old woman. Probably late 70s or early 80s if I had to guess. Obviously was terrified and ran to my parents room. When I got there I laid in between my parents and closed my eyes. Had a weird feeling, opened my eyes and the same woman was directly in front of me staring through my soul. Still gives me chills to this day. Friggin unforgettable experience. Wasn't the only one in that house either. | JDubb
05.04.25 | @Hawks, I know how you felt. My encounter with full form occurred at my parents house, in the basement. My mother had felt a presence in the house, but only I saw her. I was in college at the time, but I would have shat my pants if I had been younger.; and she had come at me twice. | Hawks
05.04.25 | Crazy stuff bro. Have believed in ghosts ever since that night. | JDubb
05.04.25 | @Hawks. I get it. As there’s no certainties in life, or the afterlife, it can be comforting to have seen such. Validates that there is “ something“ after death; perhaps not just an endless dark nothing. | unclereich
05.05.25 | I’ve said it before, but you pen the best lists, man. I’ve got a lot of thoughts and opinions on this subject, but instead of boring you with those, I’ll share my one experience with the supernatural:
It was December of 2015, a very cold night in Northern California. I was out skateboarding alone, well past midnight, after having an argument with my girlfriend at the time. I skated a few miles uptown and back, just to clear my head.
On the way back, I decided to skate down a dark road I knew well. I chose it because it ran parallel to the freeway, and the noise from my board would be drowned out by the trucks heading north on the 101. Oddly, there was no traffic-neither on the freeway nor on the road I was skating on.
I kicked my board up into my hand and decided to walk the rest of the way home, which was maybe half a mile or so. A minute or two into my walk, I decided to take a snap video. The road looked eerie, and it was ungodly quiet. Lil Ugly Mane’s Oblivion Access had just dropped, and a song he sampled kept playing in my head-Norfolk Jubilee Quartet’s “Didn’t It Rain.”
I decided to hop back on my board for the video, holding my phone out and pointing it at the road. I hit record and began whistling the song because I thought it sounded cool along with the sound of my wheels hitting each crack in the road. I stopped the video, went to post it, and quickly looked at the footage before hitting send.
What I saw still disturbs me to this day: a tall, all-black, shadow-like figure walking across the screen.
I played it again and looked behind me. There was no one there, and I would’ve seen anyone walking by. Then I thought "oh, it’s MY shadow". But there was no light source above to cast it, and I was riding my board, not walking. This wasn’t just a shadow-it was a genuine shadow figure. Something I wasn’t supposed to see, something that slipped through the cracks, and my crappy LG Stylo 1 phone happened to catch it.
In a full panic, I got off my board and ran home. I woke everyone up at my house and showed them the video. They were stunned and kind of alarmed. Everyone I showed was. The video was blurry, but the shadow was so well-defined, and it clearly walks right by me, as though it was just another pedestrian with other business to attend to somewhere up the road. It chills me to type this out. I’m pretty sure I’ve shared it here before, and each time, I’m no less scared than the first time I saw the video. | unclereich
05.05.25 |
So, what happened to the video? I didn’t know or care about ghost forums back then, and I certainly didn’t care to post it anywhere. I was busy with work and school, and I didn’t spend nearly as much time online as I do now. At 21 years old, I really didn’t care that I might have legitimate proof of a ghost or shadow figure. By the time I even thought about it, that phone and video were long gone.
It might sound like a fabrication, but it’s not. That did happen-whatever that was-and I was that oblivious that I allowed that phone and video to be lost forever. It’s been almost a decade now, and every time I take a video, or every time I hear that song, I wonder if that thing will show back up. | arthropod
05.05.25 | Not relevant to the topic, but the fact the figure you described was only seen on the recording reminded me of a bit from SCP-093-Recovered Materials: "they're everywhere on this world, only seen by machines". | BaselineOOO
05.05.25 | This band is even slimier than Primus ugh | JDubb
05.05.25 | @unclereich, that is one hella encounter. Interesting that you two just passed by in the night. Realize that I neglected this eidolon on my list, as well as an important other. Will add in. Thank you for sharing - and always interested to hear other thoughts. |
