05.04.25 | @Egarran, it's hard to say. 'Gravity's Rainbow' is widely considered to be his masterpiece (I'm not an original person, it's my favorite book of all time!). It's set during WWII, but it also features Hansel & Gretel, time travel, interdimensional exploration through a toilet, 10 pages about the exctinction of the Dodos and so much more. It's a total clusterfuck of ideas, Pynchon himself can't remember writing some parts of it (legends say he was on LSD), I personally think it's genious but it's not for everyone.
His first novel, 'The Crying of Lot 49', is batshit crazy in a similar way as Gravity's Rainbow, but it's much shorter and more manageable, so if you're intrigued by GR's drug-induced madness, maybe start with that. 'Inherent Vice' is another good starting point, it's probably his most sober and straightforward novel, it's still very complex but you usually understand what's going on (PT Anderson's movie adaptation is also very enjoyable). Against the Day is very good but I wouldn't recommend it as an introduction to Pynchon. Haven't read Mason & Dixon yet but I will one day! |
Egarran
05.04.25 | Thank you. So in conclusion, if I read Mason & Dixon before you I can claim literary superiority.
I have to get intimate with your favourite book at some point. |
CugnoBrasso
05.04.25 | Haha my favorite books might scare you off, be careful!
Pynchon is a unique author, he writes at the edges of what novels can be. His prose can be impenetrable at times, not always pleasant, but it will leave very good memories. If you can find another person willing to tackle the challenge, I highly recommend you did, because every person finds something different in his books.
I haven't read him in years but I used to be somewhat of a fanboy, I'm thrilled there's a new book on the way! |

05.12.25 | Talking about cat tongues just triggered an ancient sense memory
An old old ex of mines parents had a brain damaged cat as it was bit in the head by their dog.
As a result it had a tiny bone sticking out from it's forehead kinda like a mini unicorn horn, that it would rub against you to show affection
One of its posts brain damage traits was it would "frizz" your hair with its tongue and teeth. If it could get to your hair it would systematically lick and bite the hair until it stood upright, slowly working its way through your entire mane until you looked like tina turner.

05.12.25 | Seniors took AP Lit last wednesday, juniors take AP Lang this wednesday
Then, frankly, I'm kinda done: no school/work May 17-26 and then graduation less than a month later. We got this folks |
Trifolium
05.12.25 | Happens to all of us den. Know that you're all always on my mind.
Also the cat with a fizzing salon story was very lovely. I'll tell it to the bf, he's a real cat person.
That sounds very nice Eggy, green is a good thing, forest green ๐ even better.
Good night, sweet princes! |
denboy
05.12.25 | Awww
Good night |

Koris
05.13.25 | "THANKS FOR KILLING THE THREAD AGAIN DENBOY"
I mean, you were the one who talked about milking Ectier a few days ago. So I'd say things were already in a difficult place |

Demon of the Fall
05.13.25 | beer regularly comes in a purchasable volume of 568ml
(tragic first thought!)
idk our sense of humour is pretty legendary (and not ALL of it is attributed to me!) |
Demon of the Fall
05.13.25 | people complain about the weather but it's mostly very temperate and "liveable", that's kind of cool. Very few natural disasters, giant bears / cats, or venomous creatures like snakes and big spiders. I like that |
Demon of the Fall
05.13.25 | oh and dogs, we bloody love dogs. How can you not appreciate a country that loves dogs?!
apologies, Budgie told me to answer in his stead... (erm "we" gave birth to metal, so he will probably say Satan or something) |
budgie
05.13.25 | @phero
i really loved the architecture in aberdeen, and just the vibe of the city in the evening. when the sun hits all that granite it's really beautiful in a super goth way
also haggis and punk music |
Demon of the Fall
05.13.25 | surprisingly nuanced take, so this is the version we get today... hmm nice? |
Pangea
05.13.25 | Trif what are your feelings on red clovers. Kin or bitter rivals? |
Trifolium
05.13.25 | Scotland in general ๐๐๐๐๐๐ผ
Red clovers are ultra cute and I love them.
See also a description of Trifolium repens, a.k.a. me: "It is low growing, with flowering heads of whitish florets, often with a tinge of pink or cream that may come on with the aging of the plant"
I mean, LOOK at this cutie!!!

Although I must say I've spotted more than a few grey hairs instead of pink tinged cuties in the mirror... |
Pangea
05.13.25 | Cool. My feelings are that they should be called purple clover instead |
Pangea
05.13.25 | Grey hair is very cool and attractive though! And now i feel like you should enrich is with your wisdom daily |
robertsona
05.13.25 | I have a bunch of grey hairs now |
CugnoBrasso
05.13.25 | I've got at least 6 or 7 grey hairs on the left side of my head. I'm past my prime and my prime was like three stars out of five. |
denboy
05.13.25 | somehow the top of my head is managing to keep the grey at bay, but as the video i shared proves, my beard did not get the memo |
denboy
05.13.25 | if i shaved i'd probably look 20 years younger |

arthropod
05.14.25 | Somebody came at me with a knife yesterday, I consider myself lucky to only end up getting punched in the solar plexus and in the face multiple times.
@Egarran that's good.
@Pangea budgie? But they look so stable and harmless!
@osmark86 what a kind man, we need more people capable of respecting a refusal. |
Ectier
05.15.25 | My Melbourne adventure has started
Oh no Arthro hope you are okay |
arthropod
05.15.25 | As you can guess, I am alive (or I'm a ghost and I'm trying to fool you). My biggest concern is that I experience pain while brushing my teeth due to the wounds on the inside of my mouth. I'm literally grinding against exposed flesh.
How's it in Melbourne? |

Egarran
05.15.25 | Oh Arthro sweet angel. What happened? |
arthropod
05.15.25 | It's not that hard to achieve budg.
1. find a mentally unstable person
2. make sure they have access to weapons
3. insult them repeatedly
4. have fun |
arthropod
05.15.25 | @Egarran long story short, my brother punched me over a conversational misunderstanding, I started berating him and then he grabbed a knife. |
budgie
05.15.25 | okay i thought it was gonna be a much cooler situation but just sibling shenanigans
cocktease |
arthropod
05.15.25 | domestic violence very funny, 11/10 experience, would recommend |
Egarran
05.15.25 | I'm pretty sure it's worse when it's a sibling. Is he psychotic? Do you see each other often? How did it end? |
arthropod
05.15.25 | 1. Very likely. Not tested for anything, but the behavior speaks for itself.
2. We live in the same house, fortunately he's not present most of the time.
3. Gave up the knife at the insistence of our mother and went cycling in the middle of the night. |

05.15.25 | Hmm that makes me hungry too budgie!
Perhaps it's......... time for lunch...................... .. .... . . .. . .
In all seriousness that is tough arth, many hugs and good vibes are coming your way to use as you see fit. ๐~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
Demon of the Fall
05.15.25 | I have some experience of this (unfortunately) and that's indeed rough arthro. Is that grounds for "sectioning" where you're from?... because for the safety of himself and others, it may be necessary even if the idea of doing so seems unthinkable
Hope things improve either way. Good vibes (2) |
Demon of the Fall
05.15.25 | I would also now like a nice big bowl of pasta (definitely with olives). Not currently possible. Curse you budgie! |
arthropod
05.15.25 | There are concerns that a mental institution would fuck him up even more, but the option is in the cards.
I'm generally fine, avoiding contact works so far. It's not the type to lash out when completely ignored, but any interaction with him is a potential trigger. |
