Aerisavion 03.01.25	At time of writing: 11 out of 909. I'm pretty picky with my 5s, but my 5s are also pretty personal to me, so it's less of a 'quality of music' thing and more of a personal reverence for what the music means to me.

AsleepInTheBack 03.01.25	I’ve found the more music I’ve heard, and the more incomparable the whole different genres feel from one another, the super selective approach doesn’t seem to work. Cause if I just went for those super personal formative experiences as my 5s I’d have some folk and emo records, but none of the jazz electronic ambient hardcore metal where it’s harder to form that type of connection.

Your ratings already reflect your taste, no need to force that into your 5's. Ditching old nostalgic 5's does feel weird, but if they're not your favourites anymore, why keep them? But I think Dedes has good reasoning as well 👍
Sowing 03.02.25	If it feels essential to YOU and you can attach a timeless memory to it, it's a 5. That's basically my standard. But that's also why I have way too many of them.

If I found that out my 2181 albums that over 500 of them felt like a 5 to me, i'd have no shame. It's all based on personal feeling and connection anyway. The fact people are letting little percentage numbers have any weight on their ratings is incredibly silly to me. I will always just rate an album based on my own personal opinions and feelings, nothing more than that. Could care less about my objectivity but funnily enough it is pretty high despite me not trying to get it to be that way lol.
JohnnyoftheWell 03.02.25	overthinking whether an individual album is a 5 = good and righteous overthinking your total number of 5s based on percentages = a pointless and entirely avoidable headache, esp if it's conceived as a self-imposed levelling tool for genres that don't resonate as naturally with you that said, the imprint of 60 asleep 5s is functionally the same as the original 5 asleep 5s (a handful of genre outliers notwithstanding), so you must be doing something right
AsleepInTheBack 03.02.25	Familiarity and time spent / experiences shared with a particular album seem to be the biggest predictor of 5 for me, meaning the majority of the cool new shit I’ve tried to expand my horizons into over the last year or two haven’t yet made it into that territory (particularly as I’ve been trying to explore with a priority for breadth rather than depth). Plan is to hopefully spend more time with individual albums I’ve found over recent years rather than hurriedly trying more stuff, and convert some 4s to 4.5s and 4.5s to 5s and get a more representative spread up the top. We shall see time will tell et cetera
IsisScript80 03.02.25	^ It's almost entirely (for me) impossible to know if a new album is a "5"... time, head-space, context and nuance tend to factor in over the long-term, so assessing whether something is a timeless, flawless classic straight away is near-impossible, IMO. A few years of unchanged opinion towards it, yeah, sure... happy to 5 it.
AsleepInTheBack 03.02.25	For sure Feels like there’s a time lag on 5s (and even 4.5s) as a result. I’ll shove anything that I really like in 4 immediately, but only typically go higher if I’ve spent a lot of time with it.

MillionDead 03.02.25	I have 585 5s and I feel like they all 100% deserve it, through some combo of personal gratification or influence, with much greater consideration to the former. I also think that it isn't a stretch to say there are that many classic records when there are like infinite albums out there. I also mostly listen to music that I have a decent chance of liking. And there are a lot of albums that I thought were classic from the first listen.
Demon of the Fall 03.02.25	“esp if it's conceived as a self-imposed levelling tool for genres that don't resonate as naturally with you” assist me in parsing this… are you referring to that thing whereby some people may inflate scores for unfamiliar genres as a mark of “respect” and / or to potentially aid the perception of their own eclecticism (not necessarily optics / could just be a deceiving of oneself sort of thing, but maybe also that). Thus eliminating genre bias, but artificially I remember when I first joined Sput and wanted a ‘5 in all the well-known ‘parent genres’ - yeah, I gave up that silly idea quite swiftly, lol Having said that folk is 99% there, jazz will likely join it, but hip-hop or classical? No sign of that ambition ever being accomplished!
