Black Metal that riffs.

Cool black metal based of Middle Earth.

Highlights:

PROGRESSIVE DEATH METAL

Like old Opeth but with enough new ideas to make them more distinct than most Opeth clones.

Highlights:
As Islands Sink
Fallow Garden
21Detach the Islands
A Highly Magnified History

MATHCORE

Fucking riffs!

Highlights:
Deleted
Spiraling Glitch
20Missouri Executive Order 44

MATHCORE

Fucking riffs!

Highlights:
The Unbuckling
They Built a Bass Pro Shop In Our Zion
19Oranssi Pazuzu
Muuntautuja

BLACK METAL

One of the most unique black metal albums that I've listened to. A very strange and mostly effective soundscape here. Ikikäärme is something else entirely.

Highlights:
Valotus
Ikikäärme
18Domestic Terminal
Sanctuary

INDIE ROCK

This genre is not something I'm all too familiar with so I'll just say the choruses are great and the highlights are must listens. Some really cathartic stuff here.

Highlights:
Capo 0 Song
Golden
17Wormwood
The Star

MELODIC BLACK METAL

I like melody and this them in spades. Last track is amazing.

Highlights:
Liminal
Ro
16Hoplites
Παραμαινομένη

MATHCORE

Crazy album even if it can be a bit too much at points. Love the saxophone here. Saxophone can never be a bad thing.

Highlights:
Μῆνιν ἄειδε, θεὰ παραμαινομένη ἐμοῦ...
Συμμιαινόμεναι Διονύσῳ Ἐλευθέριῳ
15Frail Body
Artificial Bouquet

SCREAMO

Super intense album that rarely takes its foot off the pedal but still finds time for the odd cathartic melody.

Highlights:
Devotion
Runaway
14Respire
Hiraeth

SCREAMO

Not really sure what genre this band fits into but its screamo mixed with classical, jazz and black metal making for a super unique listen.

Highlights:
Keening
Do the Birds Still Sing
13Dodsrit
Nocturnal Will

BLACK METAL

Was super happy when I found out the guitarist from Totem Skin was in another band and this group did not disappoint. Great crusty black metal with super solid melodic guitar playing.

Highlights:
Irjala
Nocturnal Fire
12Veilburner
The Duality of Decapitation and Wisdom

BLACK METAL

Some really crazy instrumentation here.

Highlights:
Tem Ohp Ab in Mysticism
The Duality of Decapitation and Wisdom, Pt. 1 & 2
11The Flight of Sleipnir
Nature's Cadence

DOOM METAL

This sort of band typically isn't my thing but with the folky Agalloch-esque atmosphere, it is hard to not like it.

Highlights:
The Woodsman
Wanderer
10Coma Control
Perennial

PROGRESSIVE METAL

Between the Buried and Me but with much better harsh vocals and really amazing neoclassical guitar playing. Album slaps hard.

Highlights:
Scour the Air
Don't Sleep or You'll Fall
9Fergus McCreadie
Stream

JAZZ

Really nice piano jazz. Kinda reminds me of a Joe HIsaishi score but with a Scottish folk flare to the melodies.

Highlights:
Storm
The Crossing
Sun Pillars
8Magdalena Bay
Imaginal Disk

SYNTH POP

Really catchy and well crafted pop music. Still prefer their debut just by a little bit though.

Highlights:
Image
Watching TV
Tunnel Vision

Exhaust

MATHCORE

Absolutely fucking riffs.

Definitely a step up from their last album. Some really catchy melodies here.

Highlights:
Shadows Flap Their Black Wings
Where the Winds Meet
5Caligula's Horse
Charcoal Grace

PROGRESSIVE METAL

One of my favourite bands so I'm kinda biased here but this did not disappoint. Lacks some of the highs of their previous work but the solos are still epic and Jim Grey's vocals are still unbelievably good.

Highlights:
The World Breathes With Me
Charcoal Grave IV: Give Me Hell
Sails
4Goat
Goat

PSYCHEDELIC ROCK

Really unique sound and nothing I've really heard before.

Highlights:
One More Death
All Is One / Ouroboros

JAZZ FUSION

One of the weirdest and most fun releases of the year. Saw him live and it was incredible.

Highlights:
Terra
Holy, Holy

MELODIC BLACK METAL

Really enjoyed the inclusion of classic heavy metal into this bands sound. The solos here are some of the best of the whole year.

Highlights:
Sick Abducted Purity

Heisen Monogatari

MELODIC DEATH METAL

Everything you want in melodeath is right here. Killer riffs, electrifying solos, folk instrumentation, infectious melodies and a breakdown in rhythm of a machine gun.
