09.08.24 | Copeland - Blushing
On the surface is a really nice listen, but the concept of everything explained on it grew on me. One of my favorite films is also Vanilla Sky, so I liked the imaginative plot of exactly what the vocalist tries to convey during the whole thing. Album is a five, but definitely a grower imo. Cool list idea |

09.08.24 | cynic - focus
always seemed goofy and weird but it doesnt age at all |
myri14
09.08.24 | Shinichi Atobe - Butterfly Effect
I was meh on this at first but I came back to it a few months later after getting into some of his slightly later stuff and I felt like I could fully appreciate how simultaneously diverse and cohesive it sounded. I think stayed up all night one night listening to it which is rare for me... |
Ectier
09.08.24 | Pothamus- Raya
I always did kinda vibe with the album but as i saw a live recording of the songs in in a church it grew even more on me. |
budgie
09.09.24 | well when lantlos' melting sun came out i really didn't like it at all and was really bummed with their change in sound
but nowadays it's almost certainly in my 5 deserted island albums
|
DarkSideOfLucca
09.09.24 | I remember I couldn't stand None So Vile when I first heard it - it was prob the third death metal album I ever heard, and Lord Worm's dog barking like vocals just made it totally unlistenable to me, not to mention the music being all over the place
Now it's my favorite death metal album of all time |
Koris
09.09.24 | Obzen by Meshuggah is up there for me. I used to have it at a 1.5 back in 2013, and now it's all the way up to a 4 for me. Meshuggah in general grew on me so much over the years... I always used to criticize them for being way too mechanical and cold, but I eventually realized that this was actually part of their charm. Once I started actually figuring out their sound and overall vibe, their work became really infectious for me; hell, I even have one of their albums 5'd now |
DarkSideOfLucca
09.09.24 | Apparently most people take a while to warm up to Meshuggah, but they were a 5 band and among my favorites of all time literally the first time I heard Nothing back in 2002 for the first time |
Dedes
09.09.24 | Ty for the Copeland reminder, always seemed like a band i'd mega dig but I always forget they exist lmao
On that note ik i've mentioned this many times but sweet lord Agalloch-The Mantle. I'd listen to it almost a dozen times trying to understand what the FUCK I was missing, it was just so homogenous and dull and gray until I realized I was always waiting for some climax or moment of grandiose I felt like I needed in music at the time. It was The Mantle that taught me to let go of the preconceived notion that music needs to build towards an "epic" moment, that it can be a single texture in of itself. When the moment came it was all I jammed for nearly a month. |
omgbecky
09.09.24 | For me, it's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Used to find the vocals disgusting af, dig it now tho. |

Ladron93
09.09.24 | Gas - Pop.
I heard it back in March 2014.
My first impression was not impressive, based on the edgy metal and rock I was so accustomed to them. I gave a couple of listens to that ambient album and it did click me. Love the album for non-rock music. A song like Pop 3 fits for a movie scene. |

09.09.24 | mayhem- de mysteriis dom sathanas
easily. i can't think of another album i truly despised before but now truly love and think of it rightfully as a classic. all about the croakey weird vocals from attila. i used to think they were absolutely abysmal and truly ruined everything else going on there. they are incredibly unique and odd, very offputting at first. however, after years i came back to it with fresh ears and think the vocals fit the bleak and actually evil atmosphere perfectly. one of the only albums i've heard that's actually a little spooky and creepy. a lot of that is the weird theatrical vocal work on it. over the top at points but it really works. also has an insane drumming performance, iconic riffs, pretty clean production for 90s bm and even some bass! always one i recommend people try again and see what they think. now i want to listen to it again! |

Shamus248
09.09.24 | Converge - Jane Doe
i didn't dislike it to be a contrarian, i disliked it bc i genuinely didn't see the hype, to the extent i thought the album title was appropriate; mindless noise, no identity
it's grown on me a fair bit, albeit almost exclusively on the back of the instrumentals. vox still don't do much for me |
ThyCrossAwaits
09.09.24 | Oh unquestionably âMonoliths & Dimensionsâ by Sunn O)))
I remember buying it on a whim well before I got into anything even remotely weirdâlike pre-black metal evenâbut once it clicked and I started appreciating that vein of stuffâŚđđź Masterpiece. |

mainly because i don't like metal in general |
gabba
09.09.24 | Built to Spill - Keep It Like a Secret
For long I couldnât understand what this mid-tempo indie whining and self-pity is about, until I realized itâs exactly about this mid-tempo indie whining and self-pity. Itâs addictive. |
Jurtz
09.09.24 | Devourment - Obscene Majesty
I went from hating it on the first listen to loving it on the tenth listen. The album is so heavy and so dense that I needed time to process everything. Now I see that it's genius.

FurtherDown
09.09.24 | Probably Deathconsciousness by Have A Nice Life. I was little bit lost in the massive amount of reverb and experimentation at first, I was intrigued for sure, but it was more like "I should vibe with it" than really feeling what's going on there. Then something clicked and I've been obsessed with the record since then. Maybe it has something to do with being high and listening to it during night tram ride home but whatever, I get the vibe now regardles of the level of intoxication haha.
The other one that comes to mind is Inlet by Hum. Didn't know the band before, I started with 3.5, nice riffs but little bit repetetive. I have it at 5 now and I love every second of it. |
Demon of the Fall
09.09.24 | Botch - We Are The Romans
was unlistenable 'noise' back in 2004 or whenever I first heard it, now an all-time fave. Went through a long period in-between of being very good, but not awesome. So this journey had a few stages and lasted perhaps the longest
more recent changes of heart include "Can - Tago Mago" and "Trophy Scars - Holy Vacants", but they occurred in a shorter timeframe
Good thread |

09.09.24 | Updated, thanks for the submissions everyone! Fun to read. Lots of metal albums, which feels logical but might also be just a reflection of the userbase's taste idk
Also @efp I should check that album, discovered You Are My Sunshine last year but haven't dug into their other work yet |
oisincoleman64
09.09.24 | Blur - s/t
When I was like 14 I bought the CD as a casual fan and didn't really understand the appeal of this album outside of the 2 big singles, hadn't gotten familiar with the types of slacker rock and indie they were pulling from, years later I relistened to it and it clicked completely |

09.09.24 | @Icebloom Thanks for including my submission! My nickname is Jurtz though :P |

09.09.24 | At the Gates - The Red in the Sky Is Ours
Went from an album I was initially not too hot on to being one of my favorite albums from them and death metal in general. Definitely one of the greatest albums that rewards repeated listens. |
zakalwe
09.09.24 | The Clash - London Calling
When I first listened to it as a teen in the 90s and after many a subsequent listen I was completely underwhelmed. There didnât appear to be any intent, any âpunkâ fire to it.
Went back to it in my late twenties and was absolutely astounded by what I had completely overlooked.
Itâs a solid statement of growing up in changing times. Amazing album. |
YoYoMancuso
09.09.24 | Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica
Was barely a 3 the first time I listened, it's now in my top 20 albums ever |
Get Low
09.09.24 | The Contortionist - Intrinsic
I hated it when it came out because I wanted Exoplanet 2, but once I got over the fact that The Contortionist's deathcore days were behind them, I revisited this and found it lovely. |

09.12.24 | I love Copeland but had no idea Blushing was a concept album. Shame on me. Gotta look that up now! |
Dylan620
09.12.24 | There are a few contenders. When I was 13 and my opinions were a bit more volatile, Kid A catapulted from a 2.5 to a 5 in maybe four listens or so. Two (much) more recent examples: last year I revisited Steal This Album! by SOAD and Bottomless Pit by Death Grips; the former went from a 3 to a 4.5, and the latter went from a 2 (which had at one point been a 1.5) all the way up to a 4 |

09.12.24 | Death - Symbolic
Used to dislike it a lot. I've always respected this album, but couldn't get over the apparently obnoxious vocal delivery, weird-ass lyrics and overall unmemorability. And one night it just clicked. Varied and enjoyable listen, also the prettiest-looking CD I own. |
Koris
09.14.24 | ^ Yeah, it took some time for Symbolic to grow on me as well. Glad it eventually clicked though |
Get Low
09.14.24 | I had the complete opposite experience. I knew that Symbolic was the best death metal album I had ever heard and probably will ever hear the first time I listened to it lol |
Trifolium
09.14.24 | Probably Heritage by Opeth.
Didn't like it as much when it was released (in the 3.0 range), yet a couple of years went by and it exploded into one of my fave Opeth disks, so it turned into a 5.0. Crazy growth, hasn't fallen off over the years either, still top 4 Peth to this day. |
