What album has grown on you the most?

1Question
Question

What album has grown on you the most? And why?
2Songs: Ohia
Ghost Tropic

(Icebloom)

To me it's Ghost Tropic. Two songs ("Body" and "Incantation") clicked with me instantly, but I could not get into the rest of the album - it was all too depressing, too skeletal/minimal. Then I came back to it again and again, its unparalleled loneliness drawing me in. Now it's a top 10 album to me.
3Copeland
Blushing

efp123

On the surface is a really nice listen, but the concept of everything explained on it grew on me. One of my favorite films is also Vanilla Sky, so I liked the imaginative plot of exactly what the vocalist tries to convey during the whole thing. Album is a five, but definitely a grower imo.
4Cynic
Focus

anode

always seemed goofy and weird but it doesnt age at all
5Shinichi Atobe
Butterfly Effect

myri14

I was meh on this at first but I came back to it a few months later after getting into some of his slightly later stuff and I felt like I could fully appreciate how simultaneously diverse and cohesive it sounded. I think stayed up all night one night listening to it which is rare for me...
6Pothamus
Raya

Ectier

I always did kinda vibe with the album but as i saw a live recording of the songs in in a church it grew even more on me.
7Lantlos
Melting Sun

budgie

well when lantlos' melting sun came out i really didn't like it at all and was really bummed with their change in sound

but nowadays it's almost certainly in my 5 deserted island albums
8Cryptopsy
None So Vile

DarkSideOfLucca

I remember I couldn't stand None So Vile when I first heard it - it was prob the third death metal album I ever heard, and Lord Worm's dog barking like vocals just made it totally unlistenable to me, not to mention the music being all over the place

Now it's my favorite death metal album of all time
9Meshuggah
obZen

Koris

Obzen by Meshuggah is up there for me. I used to have it at a 1.5 back in 2013, and now it's all the way up to a 4 for me. Meshuggah in general grew on me so much over the years... I always used to criticize them for being way too mechanical and cold, but I eventually realized that this was actually part of their charm. Once I started actually figuring out their sound and overall vibe, their work became really infectious for me; hell, I even have one of their albums 5'd now
10Agalloch
The Mantle

Dedes

On that note ik i've mentioned this many times but sweet lord Agalloch-The Mantle. I'd listen to it almost a dozen times trying to understand what the FUCK I was missing, it was just so homogenous and dull and gray until I realized I was always waiting for some climax or moment of grandiose I felt like I needed in music at the time. It was The Mantle that taught me to let go of the preconceived notion that music needs to build towards an "epic" moment, that it can be a single texture in of itself. When the moment came it was all I jammed for nearly a month.
11Neutral Milk Hotel
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

omgbecky

For me, it's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Used to find the vocals disgusting af, dig it now tho.
12Gas
Pop

Ladron93

I heard it back in March 2014.
My first impression was not impressive, based on the edgy metal and rock I was so accustomed to them. I gave a couple of listens to that ambient album and it did click me. Love the album for non-rock music. A song like Pop 3 fits for a movie scene.
13Mayhem
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

Futures

easily. i can't think of another album i truly despised before but now truly love and think of it rightfully as a classic. all about the croakey weird vocals from attila. i used to think they were absolutely abysmal and truly ruined everything else going on there. they are incredibly unique and odd, very offputting at first. however, after years i came back to it with fresh ears and think the vocals fit the bleak and actually evil atmosphere perfectly. one of the only albums i've heard that's actually a little spooky and creepy. a lot of that is the weird theatrical vocal work on it. over the top at points but it really works. also has an insane drumming performance, iconic riffs, pretty clean production for 90s bm and even some bass! always one i recommend people try again and see what they think. now i want to listen to it again!
14Converge
Jane Doe

Shamus248

i didn't dislike it to be a contrarian, i disliked it bc i genuinely didn't see the hype, to the extent i thought the album title was appropriate; mindless noise, no identity

it's grown on me a fair bit, albeit almost exclusively on the back of the instrumentals. vox still don't do much for me
15Sunn O)))
Monoliths and Dimensions

ThyCrossAwaits

I remember buying it on a whim well before I got into anything even remotely weird—like pre-black metal even—but once it clicked and I started appreciating that vein of stuff…👌🏼 Masterpiece.
16ISIS
Oceanic

Asfdp277

mainly because i don't like metal in general
17Built to Spill
Keep It Like a Secret

gabba

For long I couldn’t understand what this mid-tempo indie whining and self-pity is about, until I realized it’s exactly about this mid-tempo indie whining and self-pity. It’s addictive.
18Devourment
Obscene Majesty

Jurtz

I went from hating it on the first listen to loving it on the tenth listen. The album is so heavy and so dense that I needed time to process everything. Now I see that it's genius.
19Have a Nice Life
Deathconsciousness

FurtherDown

Probably Deathconsciousness by Have A Nice Life. I was little bit lost in the massive amount of reverb and experimentation at first, I was intrigued for sure, but it was more like "I should vibe with it" than really feeling what's going on there. Then something clicked and I've been obsessed with the record since then. Maybe it has something to do with being high and listening to it during night tram ride home but whatever, I get the vibe now regardles of the level of intoxication haha.

The other one that comes to mind is Inlet by Hum. Didn't know the band before, I started with 3.5, nice riffs but little bit repetetive. I have it at 5 now and I love every second of it.
20Botch
We Are the Romans

Demon of the Fall

was unlistenable 'noise' back in 2004 or whenever I first heard it, now an all-time fave. Went through a long period in-between of being very good, but not awesome. So this journey had a few stages and lasted perhaps the longest

more recent changes of heart include "Can - Tago Mago" and "Trophy Scars - Holy Vacants", but they occurred in a shorter timeframe
21Blur
Blur

oisincoleman64

When I was like 14 I bought the CD as a casual fan and didn't really understand the appeal of this album outside of the 2 big singles, hadn't gotten familiar with the types of slacker rock and indie they were pulling from, years later I relistened to it and it clicked completely
22At the Gates
The Red in the Sky Is Ours

DaveyMonsoon

Went from an album I was initially not too hot on to being one of my favorite albums from them and death metal in general. Definitely one of the greatest albums that rewards repeated listens.
23The Clash
London Calling

zakalwe

When I first listened to it as a teen in the 90s and after many a subsequent listen I was completely underwhelmed. There didn’t appear to be any intent, any ‘punk’ fire to it.

Went back to it in my late twenties and was absolutely astounded by what I had completely overlooked.

It’s a solid statement of growing up in changing times. Amazing album.
24Modest Mouse
The Moon & Antarctica

YoYoMancuso

Was barely a 3 the first time I listened, it's now in my top 20 albums ever
25The Contortionist
Intrinsic

Get Low

I hated it when it came out because I wanted Exoplanet 2, but once I got over the fact that The Contortionist's deathcore days were behind them, I revisited this and found it lovely.
