Last month we just did IDM/EDM. This month we do the same? |
| 1 | | Sweet Trip Velocity : Design : Comfort
1st July 2024
Shoegaze / IDM / Glitch Pop [2003]
I see your Kid A and I raise you one shoegaze. Surface level rock+electronic side-eyes aside, I think this is really pretty and captivating and enigmatic and it’s own. A place and the time. [4] currently prefer second half to first will see if the tides change |
| 2 | | Rei Harakami Lust
2nd July 2024
IDM / Downtempo / Ambient [2005]
Take me home. [4.5]
Update (23.07.24): de hype [4] |
| 3 | | Fishmans Kuuchuu Camp
3rd July 2024
Dream Pop / Neo Psych / Downtempo / Dub [1996]
Way too late in the day to only have just checked this. Not a patch on long season but very little is. Still got pocketfuls of magic to it, particularly drawn out aloof sections of recurrence and minimalist things. [4] cute one for rating 2500 |
| 4 | | Skee Mask Compro
4th July 2024
Ambient Techno [2018]
As cold as ice. Love the way this sneaks in a stone cold banger of a melody within smooth as silk ambience. Subtle but not. Cold but not. Icicle hewn out of bark. [4] |
| 5 | | Echospace The Coldest Season
5th July 2024
Dub Techno / Ambient Dub [2007]
Another cold one with the bois. Wubbs and dubbs. Hyper textural. A bit lethargic. [3.5] |
| 6 | | Ilkae Bring Extra Dragons
6th July 2024
IDM / Glitch Hop / Chiptune [2004]
It’s another ikea record. [3.5] as if someone swallowed Pokémon Gold and OG Zelda and then made a mess all over the petunias. Fell asleep too |
| 7 | | Lupe Fiasco Samurai
7th July 2024
Jazz Rap / Boom Bap [2024]
Bought the ticket solely due to album art and rym genre tags. Classy. Well done. Not hugely vibing with the concept, though I’ve not read in properly yet. Kanye vibes to the bars, Drake/Kendrick vibes to the choruses (ie some bad hooks there), not necessarily what I was expecting. For all my negativity, I enjoyed (the beats are king and tbh an instrumental version with no choruses would fuck, I suspect). [3.5] closer is huge fwiw |
| 8 | | Pole 1
7th July 2024
Glitch / Minimal Techno [1998]
The first LP in this style that’s grabbed me. Deep sea diving amongst the clicks and cuts. Conversations with static. Conversations in static. Holy poley. [3.5] somewhat of a holding rate as I wanna check 2 and 3 but fucking with how absent and understated this is |
| 9 | | Pole 2
8th July 2024
Glitch / Dub Techno / Ambient Dub [1999]
Pole 2 this time is polesonal. Way more dubby deep bass melody going on, less glitchy reservedness. Like listening to your neighbours party till dawn through the ceiling. Kinda fuck with 1 more as the sparseness is intoxicating. Enjoyed wubbing with this though. [3.5] |
| 10 | | Pole 3
9th July 2024
Glitch / Dub Techno / Ambient Dub [2000]
Continues the deep dive into dub. Like robots experimenting with the sauce. Prefer the minimalist tendencies of 1 I think (still) but enjoying the melody that 2 and 3 showcase. [3.5] |
| 11 | | Ulcerate Cutting the Throat of God
10th July 2024
Disso/Tech Death [2024]
Sentient meteor covers slayer (poorly) again! The results are, uh, predictable, but good. Same NZ chugfest with the songwriting and musicianship and mildly patience testing girth. [3.5] |
| 12 | | Alcest Les Chants de L'Aurore
11th July 2024
Post-Metal/Shoegaze/Blackgaze [2024]
At its best, got me all choked up and in touch with nature and shit. At its worst, it’s just another Alcest; very pretty, but boring (songwriting predictable etc etc etc). Tho tbf loving the extent to which they’ve just gone and dropped the blackmetal aesthetic, getting way more pagan folkin vibes (ig the art helps) feels v fresh, calm, green, owed to the world, ode to the world. [3.5] but tbh I know I’ll be back and will probs [4] |
| 13 | | Basic Channel Q 1.1
11th July 2024
Minimal Techno [1993]
Everything they did was basically perfect change my mind. Okay well over exaggerating is the last sentence as while the opener is god sauce the rest is just fine. Big fuck off grooves to bliss out to. [3.5] why is this month 3.5ember |
| 14 | | Machine Girl WLFGRL
11th July 2024
Hardcore Breaks [2014]
Just turned 10. Slaps in silly ways. I enjoy them. [4] like plugging sonic into your computer and throwing steamed yams at the neighbour’s kids |
| 15 | | Regis 1994-1996
12th July 2024
Industrial Techno / Birmingham Sound [2012]
Syncopated hypnotic deth. EDM to cut [insert dated slur here] to? Just endless. The way the grooves thump and thump and th and ump and oscillate is so simple so psychedelic so addictive. [4] |
| 16 | | DJ Rashad Double Cup
13th July 2024
Footwork [2013]
Soul down to sole. Top to bottom. Closer made the whole album click. Elegant juxtaposition of velvet samples and unpredictable rhythm work. Big Burial - Untrue adjacencies, if not aesthetically then in (as we began) soul. [4] |
| 17 | | Boards of Canada The Campfire Headphase
14th July 2024
IDM / Downtempo / Folktronica [2005]
Easy listening psycho fruity bliss. Far less alien than their first two LPs, far more natural texturally and melodically. Worse as a result? Probably less iconic, at least; this feels like it could have been written by a larger group of people, whereas Children and Geo fall into a pool of 1 (technically 2). Big hugs will return for more comfort by the fire. [4] |
| 18 | | Basic Channel Octagon
12th/13th/14th July 2024
Minimal Techno / Dub Techno [1994]
Polyrhythmic headspins that sent me to sleep 2 of the 3 times I’ve jammed it and I guess that’s okay? Very headsway eyesjiggle mindboggle, anti-comprehension, the way the thing drifts undercover, deliberately (seemingly) trying to obfuscate its own structure/progression. It’s cool. Not my fave BC tho. [3.5] |
| 19 | | Objekt Objekt #1
15th July 2024
Dubstep [2011]
Only 2 songs long but kinda faultless. Love the weird 5/4 opener that sounds like silk; love the eerie plinks and bloops of Side B, Indigo and Sepia drenching club. [4] |
| 20 | | Objekt Objekt #2
15th July 2024
Dubstep [2011]
Takes everything 1 does so well and eeelllooonnngggaaattteeesss. Satisfying. Danceable. The rest of it. [4] |
| 21 | | Broken Note Exit the Void
16th July 2024
Drum and Bass / Dubstep / Noise (Darkstep?) [2019]
Silly and loud and simplistic and fun. [3] |
| 22 | | Objekt Objekt #3
16th July 2024
Techno [2013]
Finding less to praise vs 1 and 2 but I mean it’s like preferring chocolate ice cream over chocolate milk either way you get chocolate. [3.5] |
| 23 | | Objekt Cactus/Porcupine
17th July 2024
Dubstep [2012]
Fucking love the sound design on this one. Bass huge, grooves deep, melodic rhythmic shit skimming along surface like pebbles on speed. Should have been Objekt 3 rather than Objekt 3. [4] |
| 24 | | Objekt Objekt #4
17th July 2024
UK Bass / 2-Step / Ambient Techno [2017]
Potentially his best? As least in the smattering I have now compressed into 48 hours. Throws away dub focus instead hauntingly pretty ghostly vistas of feeling and fleeting wiggles. [4] |
| 25 | | Objekt Objekt #5
17th July 2024
UK Bass [2022]
Aligns with my experience of 3 - big phat fun things, less juicy nutty jiblets to much on with headphones on lights off. Absolute fire with a sound system, I suspect (the BASS). [3.5] |
| 26 | | Jan Jelinek Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records
17th July 2024
Glitch [2001]
Complete reappraisal o’clock heck. I tried this a month or so ago on a commute and was uninspired but fuck play it at night in the dark and all the granular wonderfulness and dub-y stuff makes way more sense and holy hell is rather spiritual. Sans gimmick, all heart, here. Pole has handed me the toolkit to prise this apart and the gooey centre is gooey. There’s a ghost in my headphones and he is doing the Macarena. [3] bumped to [4.5] |
| 27 | | Four Tet Pause
18th July 2024
Downtempo / Folktronica [2001]
Super cute playful clumsy endearing like big old pupperino face squished between hands. Warm goofy collage scrapbook of ideas that tbh still don’t really come together p e r f e c t l y but I mean no one is perfect. [4] |
| 28 | | Fennesz Venice
18th July 2024
Ambient / Glitch / Drone / Shoegaze [2004]
In a sense, very dull; in another, magnificent. The sense of struggle and perseverance to be pretty within these compositions is moving. [4] |
| 29 | | Four Tet Rounds
19th July 2024
Downtempo / Folktronica [2003]
All the adorable pleasant niceness of Pause, minus the occasional goofy misfire, plus the rich popcorn pit pats of jazz aka a big win. Uncomplicatedly sincere and warm. [4.5] |
| 30 | | Hiroshi Yoshimura Green
19th July 2024
Ambient / New Age [1986]
That bottled nostalgia whimsy and quiet freedom vibe. Lost in the shrubberies with shrubberies. My PC is covered in moss. [3.5] |
| 31 | | Mount Eerie (after)
19th July 2024
Folk [2018]
I listened to this on a beach in north western France. I drank a beer and watched the windsurfers. [5] |
| 32 | | Four Tet Pink
19th July 2024
Tech House / Future Garage [2012]
Spreadable. [4] |
| 33 | | Jon Hopkins Immunity
20th July 2024
Microhouse / IDM [2013]
I enjoyed this, but I also fell asleep near the end. Will retry later. [tbc]
Update (23.07.24): beats to long to stop existing to [4]. |
| 34 | | Culprate αριθμός τέσσερα (Number Four)
21st July 2024
IDM / Folktronica / Dubstep [2022]
Goofy, psychedelic, funky, spiritual, aggressive, danceable, solitary, celebratory. Weird. Greeby. Messy. Cluttered. Essential. Flawed. [3.5] |
| 35 | | toe NOW I SEE THE LIGHT
23rd July 2024
Math Rock [2024]
I love you jack. [3.5] |
| 36 | | The Books The Lemon Of Pink
24th July 2024
Folktronica / Sound Collage [2003]
Everything folks. Folk everything. [4]
Has literally some of the greatest musical moments of anywhere anything anyhow I have heard ever ever ever if only the broader compositional thinking here was (uh) thinkier(?) idk so much scope to do properly clever songwriting here and instead the songs feels like chaotic scrapbook snippets without trajectory.
Update (09.08.24): just the best fucking thing ever [4.5] |
| 37 | | The Books Thought For Food
25th July 2024
Folktronica / Sound Collage [2002]
We gotta try encapsulate everything. Look closely enough, and you’ll find some good (goof) in the human condition. Esoteric but intimate and very real. TV screens snapping on off, static and things. aleatoric But not. [4] but probably [4.5] we shall see hun
Update (08.08.24): just gets right up in your soul and dances [4.5] |
| 38 | | A.A.L. (Against All Logic) 2012-2017
25th July 2024
Deep House / Microhouse [2018]
A house build of house build of house built of house built of house built of [4]
The ducking quacking prod on this my goodness
[4.5] idk we’re all gonna fucking die anyway |
| 39 | | Eminem The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)
27th July 2024
Hip Hop [2024]
Pushes just about enough nostalgia buttons to justify the vapidity and pointlessness of its own existence. Which is me being mean cause idk this was harmless fun. [3]
Tho I mean fuck has em ever sounded this emotional and believable on any album after he kills himself (Temporary and Somebody Save Me are legitimately moving). |
| 40 | | Burial Tunes 2011 to 2019
28th/29th July 2024
Future Garage / Ambient [2019]
Case study in context. Feels meant to be. Reeks of intentionality that can’t possibly be there but just kind of *is*. Slight of hand. Smoke wind. Good bye. [4.5] |
| 41 | | Global Communication 76:14
30th July 2024
Ambient / Chillout [1994]
Lovely lovely lovely integration of melody and movements within the ambient soup formula. An good vibe. Delicious sound design. [4.5] almost certainly an overrate but idk man it’s just nice
Update (31.07.24): [4] yeep |
| 42 | | The Bug London Zoo
30th July 2024

Grimy sinister booming. [3.5] |
| 43 | | Yacopsae Tanz, Grosny, Tanz...
30th July 2024
Powerviolence [2007]
German deth fury etc. Thrash-lane-y but so sloppy and rough and ready as to avoid sterility. Super dick man. Vox and drum tone vox and drum tone. Perfected Nails’ formula before Nails were Nails. [4.5] |
