| 2023 shows I'm stoked for
So, possible #humblebrag incoming, but 2022 was unexpectedly sort of a banner year for this guy getting back into the groove (ehhh?) of live music: I ended up making it out to, by my reckoning (and a not-at-all nerdy spreadsheet I kept), 37 shows. I have no illusions about recreating that lofty number this year, especially since I missed the boat on reupping my season pass to one of my favorite local venues (which easily contributed at least a third of last year's tally, probably closer to half; I'll have to cross-reference the spreadsheet haha), but I'm hoping to at least make it out to two shows per month (and the more, the merrier). Anyways, far from comprehensive here--I'll surely get more granular with time--but as of right now, here are the top prospects I'm looking to in the year ahead. | 1 | | The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me
Starting with a cheat, but saw these guys at the venue I mentioned above (Ottobar) back in February. Pretty damn killer way to kick things off, especially considering how quickly tickets vanished, gobbled up by greedy scalpers, only to drift back down to face value closer to go-time. | 2 | | Killswitch Engage Alive or Just Breathing
Playing Ram's Head Live! on 4/10 - Haven't locked down tickets just yet, and I truthfully couldn't name a track off their past few albums, but I got into this band in high school--right around when the torch was passed (ahem) from Jesse to Howard, for context and/or proof of how ancient I am--and still have yet to see them live, and they strike me as the type to play the proverbial hits. | 3 | | Fairweather If They Move...Kill Them
Playing Metro Gallery on 4/28 - Coheadlining with an allegedly (local) legendary band called Liars Academy, whom I thought I knew before I realized I was thinking of Rival Schools. Regardless, Fairweather alone is enough for me, anything else is value added. | 4 | | The Callous Daoboys Celebrity Therapist
Also playing Metro Gallery on 5/8 - Saw them open for Rolo Tomassi last year, and the prospect of seeing them headline their own set is goddamn epic. (Frankly, even just having that many people onstage at this venue is a pretty wild accomplishment, and it's tough to undersell the tension of watching the violinist routinely almost jab her bandmates in the head.) | 5 | | Origami Angel Somewhere City
Playing Baltimore Soundstage on 5/20 - Meanwhile, saw *this* (significantly smaller) group open for Wonder Years as my first show to kick things off last year, and, well, ditto. Tickets locked and loaded, I'm already dancin'. | 6 | | City of Caterpillar Mystic Sisters
Playing Metro on 5/21 - I mean... | 7 | | Thrice The Artist in the Ambulance (Revisited)
Playing RHL 5/28 - Tickets secured, and got a whole squad lined up for this one. It's a Sunday night and I already took the next day off work since I'm certain I'll have no voice at all. | 8 | | Jeromes Dream Seeing Means More Than Safety
Playing Metro 6/1 - See #6 | 9 | | The Cure Wish
Playing Merriweather Post Pavilion on 6/25 - Hopefully not jinxing this, since the sale doesn't start until next week, but man oh man am I excited about this prospect, especially if those anti-scalping measures they've mentioned hold true. | 10 | | The Twilight Sad It Won/t Be Like This All the Time Live
Opening for The Cure, and rightfully so. Worthy of their own entry, this album has helped through some tough stuff recently. | 11 | | Bruce Springsteen Magic
Playing Oriole Park at Camden Yards on 9/9 - Technicality here, maybe, but the Boss is playing the baseball stadium literally across the street from my house, so while I certainly wouldn't have plunked down $100+ to see him, I'mma absolutely pull out a lawnchair and just soak it in. | 12 | | Death Cab for Cutie Transatlanticism
Playing Merriweather on 9/14 - SO COME O-O-O-ON, COME O-O-O-O-ON! | 13 | | The Postal Service Give Up
"Coheadlining" with DCFC
