03.02.23 | There's gonna be a debate on Begotten bein here but I stand by it.
Sure the allegory is spiritual but I would say the overall content is psychological. |
budgie
03.02.23 | 10 is one of my fav movies everrrrrrrrr
i will do one as well but its 7am and im sloopy |
PizzaBear
03.02.23 | Is Hereditary a psych horror film? It kind of leads you to believe it is for a good portion of it but then the ending kind of veers into supernatural |
foxblood
03.02.23 | great movies, 5 is one of my favorites it's a must see. as a huge silent hill fan it was cool to see what they were so inspired by in the beginning of the series. probably the coolest war movie I've ever seen. Love Hitchcock, I've seen almost all of his films even the boring ones. 1 is legendary on so many levels, the visuals were so innovative and expressive |

03.02.23 | @budgie take your time my boi |

PitchforkArms
03.02.23 | Is Martyrs a psychological horror movie, though??? |
budgie

BAT
03.02.23 | Love me some dario argento, like 4 movies away from having his entire filmography but it's the silly stuff like phantom of/dracula 3d/giallo/dark glasses. Saw most of them way back on vhs/anchorbay/bootlegs so it's been nice to catch them on Blu ray/restored. Also a fan of aronofsky and just grabbed mother but still need to give it a watch, rest of the list is bangers tho.
Annd I'd like to give a shout-out to 'One Hour Photo' and if anime counts something like 'Perfect Blue.' oh yeah and I'd also second audition that's a goodn |
Zac124
03.02.23 | Oh, I forgot about One Hour Photo. Robin Williams really is the greatest actor of all time and that film probably has one of his best performances. |
YoYoMancuso
03.02.23 | where is good burger |

03.03.23 | I'm doing an Argento top 20 next
And when I do make the list Dark Glasses is absolutely going on it. It's an absolute return to form. |
Zac124
03.03.23 | I need to watch more Argento. Only watched 2 films he directed and Demons (which he wrote I believe). |

03.03.23 | I used to always call Jacobs Ladder my favorite movie of all time and it might still be tbh. It would be my first followed by Romero's Martin. Martin is so damn underrated and I wish it would get a new release because it's been out of print for ages now. I'll do a top 20 for this too but this is one category I'll have to put more thought into. I loved Stoker when it came out but I've yet to revisit it. I need to though. Thought it was very unique at the time.
Begotten is a cool inclusion here. I spent like $80 on the DVD many years ago and remember my brain melting when I finally got to see it lol. Such a strange project that an insane amount of time was poured into to achieve that look and feel. I love it but it is not something that I get the urge to watch again often if ever |
PumpBoffBag
03.03.23 | Solid list, although the 9th configuration is a huge heap of shit imo. Chuffed to see some love for House That Jack Built and Mother! though |
Emim
03.03.23 | "where is good burger"
that one is clearly cosmic horror |
neekafat
03.04.23 | interesting |
TalonsOfFire
03.04.23 | Haven’t seen M in forever but didn’t know it was horror. 10 Cloverfield Lane and Stoker I see as psychological thrillers, not horror, but I guess it’s debatable with the former. I’m not sure if The Omen, the new Invisible Man, Mulholland Drive, or Eraserhead would count but I’m leaning toward no.
1. Psycho
2. The Witch
3. Annihilation
4. The Shining
5. Silence of the Lambs
6. In the Mouth of Madness
7. Rosemary’s Baby
8. February (The Blackcoat’s Daughter)
9. Midsommar preferably dir. cut
10. Doctor Sleep dir. cut
11. Hereditary
12. The Lighthouse
13. Us
14. Black Swan
15. Get Out
16. It Follows
17. The Sixth Sense
18. Carnival of Souls
19. Jacob’s Ladder
20. A Nightmare on Elm Street
Follow-ups would be The Night House, The Ring, The Orphanage, Pearl, Possession, and Twin Peaks: FWWM. |
twlight
03.04.23 | cool list and thread |
budgie
03.04.23 | there are a couple scenes, and also the entire last act of 10 cloverfield lane, which qualify it as horror imo, in the same way that predator or war of the worlds are horror.
and yes man blackcoat's daughter is just fucking incredible |
CaliggyJack
03.04.23 | The line between thriller and horror is really subjective. All these movies scared me in some form though so I consider them horror. |
budgie
03.04.23 | there isn't a line that delineates them :) |
CaliggyJack
03.04.23 | Good point as well |
protokute
03.04.23 | Panic Room |
TalonsOfFire
03.04.23 | Not to be annoying but thrillers and horrors can be similar and overlap but are not the same thing. David Fincher’s filmography and Christopher Nolan’s early work are thrillers for example. Psychological horror movies are usually slow paced and very atmospheric, but like I said there are certainly movies thatre both, like Get Out, probably 10 Cloverfield Lane, Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, Rosemary’s Baby, The Omen, The Lighthouse, and Black Swan. |
budgie
03.04.23 | yeah i don't think the terms are interchangeable at all, and they communicate something different to consumers or audiences, but the subgenres are more gradients than neat delineations, get out is a cool example. then there are my favorites, movies that don't have a whiff of horror for the first two acts before going batshit. like bad match, or the invitation. "why was this shit advertised as horror? it's a damn romcom-OH JESUS" |
TalonsOfFire
03.04.23 | The Invitation is a great one to bring up, I love that movie and the way it ratchets up the tension and you’re in that guys head and know he’s right but is being undermined over and over, then it explodes in the best way in that third act and it’s so well earned and gripping. |
CaliggyJack
03.04.23 | Angels and Demons is a thriller but it scares the shit out of me |
TalonsOfFire
03.04.23 | Yeah Angels & Demons I remember being very dark. Some of the scariest movies out there aren't horror, Se7en probably being the ultimate example. Also Enemy, Prisoners, Requiem for a Dream, Spoorloos (The Vanishing), Nightcrawler, Pan's Labyrinth, many war films.... |
