12.31.22 | What's your musical New Year's Resolutions?
|
ArsMoriendi
12.31.22 | Damn, I don't know if I have a musical New Years resolution
My actual one for 2023 is to start visiting the gym regularly. I actually *ACHIEVED* my one from last year which was to move into an NYC apartment and out of my Dad's place
But a musical one? Hmmm, I suppose I could stand to let more people influence what albums I end up checking. This year was one of my most stubborn "I know what I like" years I suppose, but I guess that'd require someone else picking my rec...um fuck it I'll pick:
"It's Only" by Herbert (from Bodily Functions)
It's a house song from an album that user Robertsona has tried to get me to hear. Very out of character for me, but I do like it quite a lot actually. Has some of the same mood appeal of the trip-hop I enjoy, but is far dancier and more repetitive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma1FEgxW1Kk |
Pangea
12.31.22 | Nice theme Sam!
So for my resolution i would like to continue more consistently with my journey to check discogs of classic bands (see this list: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1052758&listid=194155). This was on a very slow burner in 2022 and i would like to make some progress in 2023.
As for my rec, one of the discogs i am doing now is the Gathering and it has been good fun. Here is The Gathering - Red is a Slow Colour (From How to Measure a Planet?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR2ECElNRSk |
SlothcoreSam
12.31.22 | Ars is gonna get swole!
I forgot about that list Pangea, gonna take you a while to get through all those discogs. |
Pangea
12.31.22 | Yeah a very long term project haha |
SlothcoreSam
01.01.23 | It's a thinking person's year.
Get those songs forward! |
ArsMoriendi
01.01.23 | hmmmmmm |
Pheromone
01.01.23 | that's a great theme dam |
BitterJalapenoJr
01.01.23 | In addition to the usual farcical proclamation of turning over a new leaf on the health side of life, I also want to work on increasing both the frequency and quality of reviews.
Was on a Jawbreaker binge recently so will go for Bivouac - one of the best album finishers I've ever heard.

01.01.23 | Nice one Jalapeño! |
Shemson
01.01.23 | Things I want to achieve this year:
Write a story properly
Complete a marathon
Record more music and get people to actually listen to my hip hop efforts for the first time
Write a few more reviews on this site
With the last point in mind I submit:
Blanket
Where The Light Takes Us

from one of my rare existing reviews |
garas
01.02.23 | Idk, but I don't want to make any musical resolutions, becasue this year will be a challenge already!
You see, other than sput I write for a metal site too, and I'll work for a youtube channel too (doing podcasts and informative videos). My only wish would be to do all of these equally good and bring the usual dose of obscure and overlooked music to the table.
So, I'll just do my duty: here is something you'd normally never listen to.
"Seeing Silver in Shadow" by Lykotonon
https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=1f8fl8MtknM&feature=share |
Drifter
01.02.23 | WC - Hog
Album: The Shadiest One
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uMIvotmRas
I want to get back in touch with my roots and listen to more new (to me) g-funk because it's the best. |
fogza
01.02.23 | Hmmmm... I'd like to start messing around with a few covers again, maybe build up a small repertoire and busk once in the summer as like a little bucket list thing. In terms of a goal appropriate for this list, maybe searching for more electronic music that I find palatable... Also wondering if modern classical is something I should spend more time with. Finally, kinda embracing more corny stuff from when I was growing up and not feeling bad about being a bit nostalgic.
Four tet - Hands

BitterJalapenoJr
01.02.23 | 1. nouns - SENTAI QUARRY
Crazy blend of noise rock, emo, indie and traits of 00s post-punk revival, fucking fantastic - 4 |
fogza
01.02.23 | 1. Nouns: SENTAI QUARRY - Was enjoying this but there was a breakdown I didn't appreciate near the end, otherwise I would have scored higher. Still, a good start and a respectable 3.5
|
fogza
01.02.23 | 2. Herbert: It's Only - lol ars good resolution, this is quite nice. Could relax with a sophisticated yet fun drink to this. 3.6 |
BitterJalapenoJr
01.02.23 | 2. Herbert - It's Only
Very pleasant indeed - would slot nicely into a low-key dinner party playlist. Could be a new place to start for a much needed deeper exploration into electronic music - 3.5 |
SlothcoreSam
01.02.23 | List is updated, will work on the spreadsheet next.
1. na
2. It's Only - 3.5 This has perfect early morning work vibes. |
ArsMoriendi
01.02.23 | "SENTAI QUARRY"
Can't say I like these vocals, but the energy of the song overall isn't bad.
3/5 |
Minortimbo12
01.02.23 | Wolves at the Gate - The King
This year I will try to check more NEW music, and review them. The rec is from an EP that I'm glad I actully got into an listened to. |
SlothcoreSam
01.03.23 | Update, Spreadsheet is live.
Just need 21 more songs.
Anyone can rec us a song! |
Pangea
01.03.23 | Another resolution: keeping up with the morning coffee and sotd routine!
1. Sentai Quarry - fun chaos, had a good time with this. 3.7
2. It's Only - Chill stuff for sure, love the atmosphere and vocals. 4.0 |
fogza
01.03.23 | 3. The gathering: Red is A Slow Colour - hmmmm... don't really feel this. It trundles along with the slightly misplaced vocal, little atmosphere and no resolutions. 2.5 |
BitterJalapenoJr
01.03.23 | 3. The Gathering - Red is a Slow Colour
Gave this a couple of listens and not feeling the vibe. Not bad by any stretch but it feels quite flat and doesn't really seem to go anywhere - 2.5 |
Minushuman24
01.03.23 | Oof I don't exactly know. Listen to more music. Just started my Big Four discog run, want to wrap up my NOFX, Beach Boys, Napalm Death ones this year. Hmm. I guess I want to just get back into the groove of listening after not listening to as much music outside of the live setting.
I suppose my pick for this month will be something that represents all the albums I didn't listen to, all the ones that I almost didn't listen to until December.
Piss & Quiet - Drug Church https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhcpDkF_-YM&ab_channel=PureNoiseRecords |
Pangea
01.04.23 | 4. Bivouac - really cool and nicely noisy. 4.0 |
Pangea
01.04.23 | Minus 🤩 |
fogza
01.04.23 | 4. Jawbreaker: Bivouac - Has a bit of ballad vibe mixed in with the rocking, bustley bits. It's good, but for SOTD, too long. 3.7 |
BitterJalapenoJr
01.04.23 | ^ glad you enjoyed somewhat.
Apologies for the length of the track, first time on SOTD and didn't consider the potential etiquette - will bear that in mind. |
fogza
01.05.23 | All good, it's good to have a new participant so don't let my crustiness deter you. We should probably always put the 8 minute limit in our description for new people tbqh |
fogza
01.05.23 | 5. Blanket: Where The Light Takes Us - Not sure if it's just me, but this skirts very close to Deftones-ish territory, but has a gentle stateliness that saves it. 3.6
|
BitterJalapenoJr
01.05.23 | 5. Blanket - Where The Light Takes Us
Warm, thick and soothing, literally a comfort blanket of sound. Not hugely keen on the vocals - 3.5 |
fogza
01.06.23 | 6. Miguel: Do you... - There's something so goofy and yet cool about Miguel. This shouldn't work but it does. 3.8 |
Pangea
01.06.23 | 5. Where the Light Takes Us - pretty good heavy gaze. 3.3
6. Do You - yeah it's kinda corny, but it's also very good! 4.0 |
BitterJalapenoJr
01.06.23 | 6. Miguel - Do you...
Good bass playing on this and the production is pretty lush and suitable for the music. Aside from that, all I get is the stench of a cave-aged camembert - 2 |
SlothcoreSam
01.06.23 | 3. Red is a slow colour- 3.0 Don't know anything about this band, vocals are strong, like an earlier St. Vincent. Music compliments them well. Song is a little monotone or something, making it dull for my ears.
4. Bivouac- 4.0 Love Jawbreaker, and "Bivouac" is one of my all time favourite words. This song is a longer than their usual, but it doesn't drag. Great finale to a great album.
5. Where The Light Takes Us- 3.0 Nice lead in, vocals are to wispy quiet, the main reason i don't fuck with gaze albums is i do not like quiet vocals. Music is great though.
6. Do You.. - Do I...? 1.5 this is a change of pace, and not for me. Give me back 2022 dedex. |
SlothcoreSam
01.06.23 | Also changed the text of colours updated to Blue, that Green burns my eyes. |

01.09.23 | 7. Lykotonon: Seeing Silver in Shadow - Damn, garas and I were doing better the last round or so. The intro is actually ok, the rest of it makes me feel like I ate some bad jelly. 2 |
fogza
01.09.23 | 8. WC: Hog - Never heard this but it sounds like all that stuff that was floating around in the 90's. I'll be honest, I think I'm allergic to that mosquito synth line now. 2.5 |
Pangea
01.09.23 | 7. Seeing Silver in Shadow - this is fucking dope. Super creepy and cool instrumental vibe and i love the groove. 4.5
8. Hog- idk this just sounds too corny for me. not that bad though. 2.7
9. Hands - pretty chill and pretty unnoteworthy. 2.8 |

SlothcoreSam

01.12.23 | 7. Seeing Silver in Shadow: 3.9 Got a big industrial vibe on this metal track, it is taking me on a nice journey. Good song
12. Piss & Quiet: 3.8 I listened to this album quite a bit when it came out, and thought it was pretty great, but not memorable. This was one of the standout tracks. |

01.16.23 | 14. The Eradicator: I'm a Squashman - Not really into comedy songs but the video and concept makes me smile, because I believe this guy really fucking loves squash. 3 |
fogza
01.16.23 | 15. Modest Mouse: Shit luck - Always thought of this as a palate cleanser but it's still just excellent. Modest Mouse were amazing at this point in their career, migosh. 4 |
dedex
01.16.23 | 14. I'm a Squashman - i didn't listen to the lyrics so ig the dude likes squash? solid tune! 3.5
15. Shit Luck - forgot these dudes did some yelling and proper riffing. 3.8
16. I Am in the Garden - lovely elevating tune for a somber winter morning. 3.6 |
fogza
01.16.23 | 16. Timbre: I am in the garden - In two minds, the opening reminds me of when I was 13 and the neighbour used to host retrospectives of her paintings of fairies and there was a string quartet and flautist and it was a bit painful. But the bit at 4:30 escapes the stuffy constraints and is genuinely beautiful. 3.1 |

dedex
01.17.23 | 17. Coattails - sadboi stuff, but powerful stuff. 3.8 |
fogza
01.17.23 | 17. Low: Coattails - I prefer Low's middle career output but as an exercise in discipline you'd be hard pressed to find a more determined example than curtain hits the cast. Still incredibly beautiful and everything Mimi sings is more poignant than ever. 3.9 |
fogza
01.17.23 | 2nd rec
The Tragically Hip - It's a good life if you don't weaken
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwNVxvczgCs
I think everyone is going to hate this one (essentially a rock power ballad), but over the last year and a half this has taken on significant meaning for me, to the point that it almost brings me to tears. I'd like to get out of my small world syndrome, i want to be a more empathetic husband. i think i'd like to process a certain level of survivor's guilt that i'm carrying about leaving. i want to go see shows, i want to maybe make some friends, if some sort of secular grace allows that later in life. i'd like to work through the fear i've been living with for years; i'd like to feel what relative peace feels like. sometimes a song just carries a lot of weight, maybe gord downie was just one of the best lyricists ever and it fucking sucks he died early. |
Trifolium
01.17.23 | My resolution: getting realigned with checking new music on a consistent basis! That would be my new year's resolution if I would do those kind of things.
Representing this: Pitou will finally release a full length, in March. Get ready for hype and for one of the most gorgeous voices in music today!!!!!

01.17.23 | Time to start the catch up
8. WC - Hog - I'm a complete novice on anything hip-hop related but this was a kinda fun listen - 3
9. Four Tet - Hands - always meant to give Four Tet a try and really enjoyed this. Gave me BoC vibes mixed with the jazzy drums of Tortoise - 4 |
SlothcoreSam
01.17.23 | 15. Shit luck : 4.0 a fun fuzzy number here. This plane is definitely crashing. This is how you should start a live gig.
16. I am in the garden 2.5, and I'm back asleep.
17. Coattails: 2.8 this ain't gym music.
|
fogza
01.18.23 | 18. August Burns Red: Speech Impediment - Not for me, I don't like the tone of anything here, it's just like a bunch of stuff happening over here with a bunch of stuff happening over there. 2 |

01.18.23 | yeah kinda expected that |
fogza
01.18.23 | lol i am nothing if not predictable |
BitterJalapenoJr
01.18.23 | 10. Wolves at the Gate - The King - generic and too "epic" for my tastes - 2
11. Static Dress - fleahouse - sound familiar but I can't put my finger on it - enjoyable regardless - 3
12. Drug Church - Piss & Quiet - fast and motivating punk that's over before you know it - 3.7
13. Joey Beltram - Energy Flash - for daytime listening - 2.5. I can see this being much more enjoyable in a different setting such as the dying hours of a house party (in that environment, likely a 3.5)
14. The Eradicator - I'm a Squash Man - fun and catchy punk rock is generally a winner for me 3.5
15. Modest Mouse - Shit Luck - another band I've never properly checked - will rectify that based on this stuff - 3.8 |
fogza
01.19.23 | 19. Godcaster: Pluto Shoots His Gaze into the Sun - It feels like an idea or sketch. Some pretty guitar moments but ultimately I feel like I ordered a burger and chips and got a roll with some tomato and three chips. The roll was reasonably fresh though. 3 |

01.20.23 | 20. Loose - ugh fogza is insufferable with his takes, i cant say nothing else 'cause he's right. 3.4 |

This is Therapy? at their most accessible and a good entry point. They have some pretty weird stuff.

01.22.23 | 7. Seeing Silver in Shadow - pretty eerie and heavy as fuck, decent if not overly memorable - 3.0
16. I am in the Garden - did not grab me in the slightest
17. Coattails - perfectly melancholic post rock - 3.6
18. Speech Impediment - furiously generic chugging but can't really fault it for what it is - 3.0 |

01.24.23 | 24. Katatonia: The Longest Year - Ok, I should be grateful - no meaningless kick drum abuse, and the vocals aren't that metal cookie monster thing. Something is still a bit corny, maybe it's the lyrics, misplaced earnestness and the lame keyboards. But, by metal standards, I'll take it. 3 |

01.24.23 | 24. The Longest Year - Katatonia is the kinda band I *like* but do not *love*. This is a good instance of a song I *like* but do not *love*. 3.0 |

01.25.23 | 19. Pluto Shoots HIs Gaze Into the Sun - nice, but end up too fluffy and little boring. 2.8
20. Loose - fun catchy stuff! 3.5
21. It's a good life if you don't weaken - love the description and resolution fogza! as for the song, i am indeed not a big fan i'm afraid. Not huge on his vocals and it all feels a little corny in not at particular manner i care for. 2.5
22. His Song - yeah really like this Pitou album. Sparse and good feeling for using space in composition. Vocals are lovely of course! 4.0
23. Ethel - was kinda bored by this :/ 2.7 |
Pangea
01.25.23 | Melt Yourself Down - Pray For Me, I Don't Fit In https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncVMWMVrMT4 (from the album with the same name)

Resolution #3 is to review a little less stuff that someone else on Sputnik will inevitably cover anyway and a little more stuff that either a) needs the attention and took time and effort to unearth or b) I care about more deeply and not-so-secretly think is too good for you filthy reprobates

01.30.23 | 24. The Longest Year. 3. It's a slow start, then the minute mark hits and we get the alt metal. Not bad.
25. History's Strangers. 3.5 Bronx hype, seen these guys a few times and always liked their music.
26. Co-pilot. 2.9 Robertsona hype. Sounds like 90s female fronted alt rock. Not for me
27. Norman. 4.0 Now this is more like it. Great build up, vocals are great. Good song, i would listen to this again, well check the album.
28. Is U, 3.3 mixing things up here with some UK future bass, pretty chill. Might check the album too.
29. Pray for me.. 4.0 fun dance punk/ Jazzy afrobeat. Now this is what I need in my life, gonna jam this in full when I get home. My little one will love it, he's a groover.
30. Sever. 3.2 has a late 70s vibe. Pretty good rock, if this is slowcore, then I can dig it.
31. Seven years have come and gone. 3.7 Time for some crazy CugnoBrasso shit. Oh this is the quiet start one, great introduction here, but where's it going to go. This whole album is a trip, recommend you give it a shot. Oh here we go 2.40 and the fun is over. Metal, then jazz, where's the pop punk on this one. Great song though.

30. Sever - ruless, jams super well. 4.3
