The best music in the world was made in Bristol in the late 80s and early 90s. Some people know it as trip hop (also dj shadow I guess)

Blue Lines
The first cohesive album to come from Massive Attack, Blue Lines was released in 1991. The powerful "Unfinished Sympathy", featuring Shara Nelson is a standout here along with vocals from Tricky on "Five Man Army" and "Daydreaming" just give this release something extra that the smooth jazz that had been heard before it never had. |

Protection
Protection came out in 1994, 4 years before Mezzanine and a year before Maxinquaye. And some actually credit the Guyanese-born British dub music producer and engineer Neil Joseph Stephen Fraser's album "No Protection" as a major influence on Mezzanine, based in significant part on this album. We have more smooth jazz here. "Sly", "Karmacoma" and "Three" are standouts. |

Years before Nosaj Thing's undercredited remix to "Wandering Star" was the 1994 Portishead release Dummy, in my opinion their best, In addition to the aforementioned track, "Glory Box", which also sampled Isaac Hayes and "Mysterons" are those that most engage my sense of the sublime. |

Preemptive Strike
The term "trip hop" was coined by a Rolling Stone writer named Andy in reference to the song "In Flux". DJ Shadow's work was not in the immediate vicinity of Bristol (a young man out in san francisco discovers yet another way of getting off ... right on!); however, both the Bristol acts mentioned and DJ Shadow are considered seminal trip hop acts of the era. |

Composed entirely of samples, Josh's most critically acclaimed album shows his unparalleled attention to the molding together of different compositions. Very smooth, very easy to listen to. Very relevant to the era. "Midnight in a Perfect World", "Building Steam With a Grain of Salt" and "Stem Long Stem" are arguably the most elaborate and ornate compositions here. |
