Their debut MFKR is by far their most interesting - it’s like mr bungle with more metal elements and Anders does everything from rapping to James hetfield shouts to death growls which was pretty unheard of in 96. The experimentation doesn’t always work but a lot of it does and it’s so eclectic
s/t is their quintessential work
Iowa is a good dose of aggression but at that point I may as well listen to a better extreme metal album
Vol 3 has some cool songs like duality, vermillion part 2 and danger keep away but it’s not my first choice if I feel like listening to them and it’s too formulaic and dumbed down for my liking
AHIG is a bit more complex death metal oriented with half its tracks and I prefer Corey’s deeper vocals although it’s a fairly boring listen |

05.26.22 | I still say this is their best, slightly over the debut, because the debut has a couple duds and pacing issues IMO (but probably higher highs).
I don't think I agree about that last point. I'd accept an argument that Slipknot / Mudvayne debuts were largely important in "saving" metal in that era, but Shadows Fall / Killswitch / AILD / LoG were coming whether Slipknot released Vol 3 or not. |

05.27.22 | as for the rick rubin production : overall it sounds fine but there are several spots on the album where the mixing is just amateur levels, it's not death magnetic bad but there are multiple instances of the guitars clipping or just bleeding through the entire mix as if they're multitracked but out of phase[2nd half of before i forgets a notable example]. that saaid i actually do like rick rubins other metal production work like the system of a down albums or slayer, and joey jordisons drums sound great on vol 3. juust the mixing lacks a punch the ross robinson albums had, doesn't hold up aswell on subby lowend systems.
but yeah damn i was 11 or 12 when this dropped, think it holds up well as a swansong for the nu metal radio era |
