(The Subliminal Verses) Turns 18

Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) turns 18 today. Here are some opinions and lukewarm to hot takes.
1Slipknot
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

It is tied with s/t for their best album though for reasons that are almost completely different as to what makes s/t contender for their best.
2Slipknot
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

The heaviest moments on Vol. 3 are heavier than the heaviest moments on Iowa. They draw more purely from death metal without filtering through nu-metal.
3Slipknot
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

Slipknot have always been prog metal, but this is their most outwardly prog album.
4Slipknot
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

Despite the band's gripes w/Rick Rubin this is the best produced Slipknot album. It has a crackly quality that gives it a weird ambiance. The slower numbers feel creepier because of this and the more energetic cuts feel more powerful.
5Slipknot
Vol.3: The Subliminal Verses [Reissue]

If "Scream" had been included on the original tracklist, it would have been a top 3 song.
6Slipknot
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

Iowa is often pointed to as the "darkest" Slipknot album but I would argue this one is much darker. Iowa was the band raging with their demons, Vol. 3 is the band succumbing to them.
7Slipknot
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

Vol. 3 is without question Joey's best album from a drumming perspective. His speed and precision here are on another level.
8Slipknot
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

It is also Corey's best album vocally. I know he's not a fan of his performance but I think his tattered and torn (see what I did there?) delivery was the perfect vehicle to deliver the darker themes present here.
9Slipknot
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

This is their best mask era.
10Slipknot
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

Without this record, metal would have never had that mid-late aughts boom in mainstream popularity. Without this record metalcore never would have become a viable commercial force for those couple of years.
