The Great American Road Trip

In six weeks my wife and I will be driving coast to coast, from Connecticut to California. Naturally, I'm putting together playlist(s) for the drive, which is going to cover 12 days and approx. 3,400 miles (5,400 km). I'm looking for album and song recs of road trip music, particularly if they're classic Americana or California-themed.
1Red Hot Chili Peppers
Californication

Probably the whole album, but also every RHCP song that references California...so, every RHCP song?
2He Is Legend
I Am Hollywood

SitarHeroine much prefers later He Is Legend, but 50+ hours is a long time to be driving and we're probably going to run out of music, so this might get a play.
3Eagles
Hotel California

There's going to be plenty of southern/country rock.
4Mr. Bungle
California

I'm pretty sure SitarHeroine won't like this, but she won't know until she tries it.
5ZZ Top
Tres Hombres

SitarHeroine recently discovered classic rock radio and absolutely adores ZZ Top, so I can see us doing a discog deep dive.
6Sublime
Sublime

Is there a more quintessentially Californian '90s band? Maybe only 311, even though 311 are from Nebraska, which we'll be passing through so there's room for both on this playlist.
7Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever
Hope Downs

Not Californian or Americana, but still appropriate.
8Fleetwood Mac
Rumours

Double bill with Buckingham Nicks.
9Queens of the Stone Age
Songs for the Deaf

Obligatory.
10Kyuss
Welcome to Sky Valley

Obligatory Pt. II
11No Doubt
Tragic Kingdom

There's probably going to be a fair amount of ska.
12Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Damn The Torpedoes

Obligatory Pt. III even though SitarHeroine has a tolerance limit with Petty's voice.
13Casualties of Cool
Casualties of Cool

North American is American enough. And there's never not a good time to listen to this.
14Sturgill Simpson
Sound and Fury

I vaguely remember not liking this when it came out, but maybe it's time to give it a second chance.
15Drive-By Truckers
The Dirty South

Would have been more fitting if we were actually visiting the Dirty South, but still probably fits the mood and theme pretty well.
16Modest Mouse
This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About

and The Lonesome Crowded West rec'd by Ryus
17The Smashing Pumpkins
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

Rec'd by JKing92
18Pink Floyd
The Wall

Rec'd by JKing92. I recently realised, after years of being ambivalent about Floyd despite everyone I know and whose musical tastes I respect loving the shit out of them, that I don't really like Floyd. But maybe this is just the kind of circumstance in which to learn to appreciate them.
19Townes Van Zandt
Townes Van Zandt

Rec'd by DominionMM1
20Bruce Springsteen
Born to Run

Rec'd by Sunnyvale, and Nebraska rec'd by Dominion
21Lynyrd Skynyrd
Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd

Rec'd by Sunnyvale
22Son Volt
Trace

Rec'd by Sunnyvale. While SitarHeroine likes countrified rock, this might be too country for her. It would probably be a nice change of pace though, so I think I can talk her into it.
23Swervedriver
Mezcal Head

So damn slept on.
24Jerry Cantrell
Brighten

I don't know why but I still haven't dived into this even though I've been eagerly looking forward to a Cantrell country record ever since BGWTB came out.
25Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin IV

Going to California? Why not.
26The Cars
The Cars

Rec'd by ArsMoriendi
27Wilco
Being There

Rec'd by Kompy
28R.E.M.
Reckoning

Rec'd by Kompy. Another band I usually dislike, but maybe this is the way to learn to appreciate them.
29The Mountain Goats
Tallahassee

Rec'd by Kompy
30Two Gallants
The Throes

Rec'd by widowslaugh123
31The Beach Boys
Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of The Beach Boys

Rec'd by Emim. Because, of course!
32Butch Walker
American Love Story

Potentially controversial.
33The Bins
Happiness Complete

Rec'd by rellik
34Minutemen
Double Nickels on the Dime

Rec'd by rellik
35Trophy Scars
Astral Pariah

Rec'd by rellik
36Truckfighters
Gravity X

Rec'd by rellik. There probably needs to be more stoner rock on the list, and while SitarHeroine is generally a fan I think there's a limit to how much of it she can tolerate.
37The War On Drugs
Lost in the Dream

and A Deeper Understanding rec'd by Icebloom.
38Clutch
Blast Tyrant

and Earth Rocker
39Foo Fighters
Wasting Light

In memory of Taylor Hawkins
40All Them Witches
Dying Surfer Meets His Maker

Rec'd by RadioSuicide. Sweet rec! The name sounded vaguely familiar but never listened to these guys before.
41Pixies
Doolittle

Rec'd by RadioSuicide. Classic.
42The Mamas and The Papas
If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears

Rec'd by Sinternet. More classic.
433rd Secret
3rd Secret

Bit underwhelming on first listen, but a couple of songs did stand out and the album is pretty atmospheric so probably worth a deeper dive.
44Silk Sonic
An Evening with Silk Sonic

Doesn't exactly fit the theme, but might be a nice change of pace.
45Red Fang
Murder the Mountains

I may have underestimated how much SitarHeroine actually likes stoner rock.
46The Sword
Warp Riders
47Fu Manchu
California Crossing

and King of the Road. The whole purpose of this band appears to be to soundtrack this roadtrip.
