Trif's 2022 ☘ Records I Love

2022 is here, and so is this list! I will once again collect everything 3.5 and up on this page, which will be updated as time goes by.
1The Gathering
Beautiful Distortion

Alternative rock/Trip hop

4.0

This rules! Best Silje performance yet, LOOOOOOVE that Attie Bauw production is back (duh!), gorgeous instrumentation. Heavy if_then_else vibes on this one.
2The Gathering
Interference

Alternative rock/Trip hop [EP]

4.0

That HTMAP? live version is lovely, and Stronger already ruled of course.
3Meshuggah
Immutable

Progressive metal/Thrash

4.5

My god does this rule. Our loveliest Swedish androids have once again shown that they are indeed one of the most consistent bands... active now? Ever? Maybe both. Banger after banger here, can't even begin to name my faves. Better than The Violent Sleep Of Reason for me.
4Uwalmassa
Malar

Electronic/Folk/World

3.5

Indonesian, sparse, gamalan-galore. Electronic tribal stuff, really enjoyable listen!
5Odezenne
1200 mètres en tout

Hip hop/Electronic

3.5

An eclectic weirdo of a record. Pretty (that opener!), but with making use of highly saturated electronics (think Justice but than soft, or Idioteque but than less aggressive). Tranquil yet it packs a punch.
6Hallas
Isle of Wisdom

Hard rock/Progressive rock

4.0

Not their best one, but these guys are still going strong! Veers a little too close towards prog, sometimes sacrificing the catchiness of earlier records, an element which I super adored. This is still super nice however.
7Black Folks Don't Swim?
For the Source

R&B/Soul/Jazz

4.0

Absolutely in love. Funky, groovy, with lots of character and so... much... SOUL! This record is immensely alive and breathing and I can easily see this growing into a gorgeous 4.5 one day. Oh and that production! Thanks Myth!
8Panoram
Acrobatic Thoughts

Electronic/Progressive

4.0

This reminds me of Ultraworld-era The Orb (Wandering Frames!), and HELLO, that's a good thing! A laid back yet adventurous offering with lots of throwback. Slow moving and relaxing!
9Anna von Hausswolff
Live at Montreux Jazz Festival

Drone/Experimental [Live]

4.0

How can ANYTHING containing Ugly & Vengefull be less than excellent ever? Hello! That track. Also this contains so many Anna highlights, it is so wonderfully performed and recorded, oh my. Very fitting for an event with a status as legendary as the Montreux Jazz Festival.
10Silvana Estrada
Marchita

Latin/Folk

3.5

A very cute, friendly album. Completely centred around Estrada's warm, emotive voice. Nothing else needed in her case! With some nice instrumentation too!
11Goncalo Almeida and Dirk Serries
Live at OZO LAND

Jazz/Experimental [Live]

4.0

Production is brilliant, playing even better. Adventurous, plinky plonky, just a guitar and a nicely dirty double bass having fun. Amazing record! [Reviewed]
12Jesper Munk
Taped Heart Sounds

Blues/Soul/Rock 'n' Roll

3.5

Twelve classic blues, soul, rock n roll, jazz covers, ranging from Etta James to JJ Cale; one tape recorder, one studio, Munk and The Casette Heads. This is one lovely record. Relaxing and natural.
13Jana Horn
Optimism

Folk/Singer-songwriter

3.5

Sweet, cute, calm, and intimate. Just how I like them! More diverse than you would expect too.
14Simone De Kunovich
Mondo Nuovo

Deep house

3.5

Another The Orb-ish record, super fun, magical production, nice journey, cool percussion, samples, some tropical vibes, a really nice record! Short but sweet, hope there's more to come from Simone!
15Oumou Sangare
Timbuktu

Wassoulou

3.5

This was cool, I mean, it's OUMOU, but I do prefer her more acoustic heavy albums. Still a gorgeous voice and infectuous melodies and rhythms that demand rigorous body movement.
16Al Wootton
Callers Spring

Techno/Garage/Dub [EP]

4.0

Lots of emptiness, great beats, nice flow, some crackles and pops, cold and deep. Just the way I like it!
17Stone Axe
Stay of Execution

Hard rock/Blues

3.5

As throwback as that gorgeous cover suggests, carried out wonderfully. Expect wailing guitars and belting vocals, and a laid back experience!
18Weval
Time Goes

Electronic/Trip Hop [EP]

3.5

That Weval sound oh YEAH! Always love their stuff, this is no exception. Listen to 'Minute by Minute' here: https://youtu.be/xmX1-fl2qe4
19Nneka
Love Supreme

Soul/Reggae

4.0

Precise, calm, with a nice flow. Head bopping and insides vibing! REVIEWED!
20Juanita Euka
Mabanzo

Samba/Funk

3.5

Smooth singing by miss Euka, with hip moving, body shaking groove and funk!
21Pi Ja Ma
Seule Sous Ma Frange

Indie/Pop

4.0

A little less goofy than her debut, but still excellent and cute and fresh and poppy and quirky and very very lovable. Smiles and summer and happiness!
22Quiet Dawn
Movements

Jazz/Fusion [EP]

3.5

Funky, groovy EP from Parisian multi-instrumentalist Will Galland. Nice rhythms!
23Gunwood
Dream Boat Jane

Rock/Folk/Blues

3.5

Pretty poppy, catchy, yet this also has a slight little edge. Might be the super light French accent. Enjoyable!
24Maria BC
Hyaline

Folk

4.0

Not as good as her first EP, but still wonderful. Especially hoped for more along the lines of that final track on the EP, so gorgeous!
25RX-101
New Discoveries

Techno

4.0

Rules. As expected. Wonderful project from the 90s, recordings have been lying in an attic for 30 years and are now being released finally. Third full length, hope there are many more to come.
26Jack J
Opening the Door

House/Rock/Disco

3.5

Don't necessarily like the (Damon Albarn-light) vocals but the funky, retro sounding music is cute! Good summer vibes album too.
27The Soft Pink Truth
Is It Going to Get Any Deeper Than This?

House/Funk/Disco

4.0

A very weird yet super delicious album, blending ultra danceable disco and funk with house and other contemporary club music. You never know what's around the corner here. Moodswing is so good!
28Tamino
Sahar

Folk/Rock

3.5

Love his voice, silky and Indigo-Night-blue. Better than his first LP.
29Blackwave.
No Sleep In LA

Hip Hop/Soul

4.0

Better than their debut, more similarities with EP Mic Check. Lovely stuff from an enthusiastic Antwerp duo.
30Darkthrone
Astral Fortress

Heavy metal

4.0

Another excellent throwback album in an amazingly extensive and high quality discog. We all know it at this point: a new Darkthrone is always worth it.
31Skalpel
Origins

Jazz/D'n'B

4.0

They're kind of back on track after 2020's not-more-than-semi-nice record. This is leaning more heavily on jazz again, with added orchestral backdrop (super nicely done!) and some cool d'n'b-ish vibes. Good one from these nice Poles!
32d'Voxx
1984

Berlin School Electronic

3.5

A little too many voice clips, but that's part of the storytelling approach this takes I guess. Still really love their take on hypnotizing atmospheric stuff, but I prefer the debut.
33Pole
Tempus

Dub/Techno

3.5

A slightly less enjoyable record than Pole's 2020 offering, but COME ON this dude understands the value of super warm production, dark and brooding atmospheres and slow, hypnotizing developments.
34Warhaus
Ha Ha Heartbreak

Indie/Pop

4.0

As sexy as ever, nicely groovy and wonderfully produced. As expected, Maarten always delivers! Some super cute string arrangements too!

Is this his best one yet?
35Natalia Lafourcade
De Todas las Flores

Latin/Folk/Orchestral

3.5

Yet another lovely entry in a very sweet and charming discography. As can be expected this one has a lot of swing, groove, and some beautiful orchestral arrangements. MarΓa la Curandera is my standout so far!
36Denuit
Inferno

Electronic/Gothic

3.5

Siouxsie-esque, from France. Cheesy? Bien-sΓ»r! Highly enjoyable.
37VanWyck
The Epic Tale Of The Stranded Man

Folk
4.0

Sweet, quiet, calming, melancholic. There's Tiny Vipers here, there's Ruth Rundle (maybe?) and there's Joni.
