Silent Hill Ranked
8Akira Yamaoka
Silent Hill Homecoming

This game is just lame and feels longer than it is. So many motifs that don’t fit silent hill are present here, and everything just feels like the average person’s idea of what Silent Hill is. The same philosophy that made the movies. I don’t hate this, but I also don’t really like it. It’s just a big meh. The soundtrack is the best part.

Silent Hill: Downpour Original Soundtrack

Not the worst game tbh. There are definitely some interesting elements to this, and the story is alright. But it doesn’t feel like silent hill at all, which makes me wonder what the point of it is. Also by this point, the Silent Hill 2 take on the story has been done to death and I’m truly sick of seeing it. If there’s ever another game in the series, I’m going to be PISSED if it follows that same exhausted formula.

Silent Hill Origins

The only post-Team Silent game to capture the uncanny nightmare of the earlier games. Story wise this is kind of ass, and characterizes some people poorly. But the soundtrack and visuals work perfectly, and it was nice to play this back at release and to feel like Silent Hill was back, having no idea where it would go after this game :(

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

A great standalone game. Totally missing anything that would make you think “oh this is silent hill” and the chase sequences are really lame, but the graphics, the music, and the slow paced exploration and focus on atmosphere are really great, and I’ve replayed this far more than the other later entries.

Silent Hill

This rating is kind of scandalous. A totally classic survival horror game in its own right, but has always been my least favorite of the original 4 games. It’s absolutely frightening and has an abrasive, unwelcoming vibe, and pretty much everything works great, but it’s nothing that hasn’t been done better by the following games. 3 especially.

Silent Hill 4: The Room

The most underrated entry. I love this game. While I think having to replay the same areas over again was a bad design decision, each area is fittingly spooky, and there’s a vibe to this that’s really unlike anything else I’ve ever played. Even within its own franchise. The water prison always freaked me out when I was a kid. The soundtrack is top notch as well

2Akira Yamaoka
Silent Hill 2

This game is both deserving of its hype and a bit overrated. I only say that because it sort of clouds everyone’s perception of the other entries, and the franchise as a whole. This was sort of an off-shoot for the series, and it seems to be the only one anyone talks about. With that said, this game is amazing. I’ve never seen a game with a story and tone this bleak and depressive. By the end of it, you feel totally drained emotionally, and it’s awesome. The soundtrack is GOATed

Silent Hill 3

The greatest survival horror game of all time, and my favorite piece of media of all time. This game is so unsettling and fleshes out all of the series’ best elements up until this point. The story is great, and Heather is one of the most believable characters in all of gaming. The soundtrack is easily my favorite as well, I LOVE the vocal tracks on here, nothing but bangers, and the atmosphere is top notch. I wish Team Silent would come back.
