The RYM Top 100

Going to listen for the first time or re-listen to all of the albums on the RYM top 100 and give my thoughts
1Stevie Wonder
Innervisions

#100 - Haven't heard

This was a very good starting point. I've only heard one Stevie album before and it was the one before this, Talking Book, and off the bat I've got to say this is way better. This is so much more lively, the percussion is incredible, and his vocals are playful, but still amazing. When "Too High" started, I was not expecting the complexity in sound, but it was greatly appreciated. The funkiness maintains its momentum from the beginning and real consistency is the mark of an amazing album. I can definitely see why this is ranked so high and will need more listens.

Fav songs: Too High, Living For the City, Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing
2John Coltrane
Giant Steps

#99 - Haven't heard

Alright so I am not well versed in jazz and will probably listen to more jazz albums doing this than I have for the past 5 years. I will say this album is very enjoyable, but I am not in love with it. I love how manic it is, it starts quite abruptly, and all the instruments sound great. I appreciate the skill this kind of music takes, but Innervisions definitely captured my attention more. I think I just don't know what makes this more beloved than other jazz albums and we will see if that changes as I hear others. There are a few standout moments, I love the hypnotic intro to Syeeda's and the piano solo in Mr. P.C. is like candy to my ears, so this warrants more listens for sure.

Fav songs: Giant Steps, Syeeda's Song Flute, Mr. P.C.
3Talk Talk
Spirit of Eden

#98 - Have heard

It has been years since I've listened to this and goddamn it's just as beautiful as the first day I heard it. What took me aback was all the little noisy parts because for some reason, in my head, this didn't have the guitars the way that they are. I might even appreciate this more than I used to. Mark's voice works really well with the atmosphere created, even when he gets loud it's still soothing, and the sparsity of the instrumentation makes it such a pleasant listen while I'm sitting in my office chair.

Fav songs: Eden, Desire, I Believe In You
4Sufjan Stevens
Carrie and Lowell

#97 - Have heard

This one is pretty easy for me to write about since I've listened to it probably 100 times since it released. It's a perfect folk album, highly consistent, poetic, emotional, and just plain beautiful. Suf's hushed vocals throughout the album create this intimate feeling, like you're right in front of him, listening to him spill his heart out about his mother's death. I will say it doesn't hit like it used to hit, but I can still put it on and get teary eyed.

Fav songs: Death With Dignity, Eugene, Fourth of July
