02.08.21 | My thoughts on Abel's (The Weeknd) half time performance. First off huge to see him and Daniel Lopatin (i.e. Oneohtrix Point Never) collab more with Dan being the main producer and director (hope to see them collab more into the future. Second it was good. Nothing mind-blowing but he showed off his vocal prowess. The problem is his discography is sonically all over the place and that showed on the performance.
However what I want to talk about is how every year people find it "bad" or " inappropriate". Performers at the grammys (for the most part) are always praised, which makes sense since people who watch the grammy's like music (for the most part). However the superbowl is not a place where people like music or at least have the "old music is better" mentality. If you don't care for it then move on. Let music be music! |

02.08.21 | underwhelming and boring |

02.08.21 | I thought it was okay, having a bunch of dancers in the field was cool but I thought the dance itself was kinda weak |

02.08.21 | Ya I liked that he tried to encompass the astetic of his albums. But I do see where people will find it boring. |

02.08.21 | the show itself was a tad underwhelming, but I liked the setlist! I really like the medley structure that they set up for the SB, with snippets of each song flowing into the next. |

02.08.21 | something tells me they couldn’t do everything they wanted to because of Covid restrictions. but I agree with Colton the dancers were conventionally lame. The robo choir was lit tho. |

02.08.21 | Ya, there seemed to be a bit of restrictions on what they could and couldn't do! |

02.08.21 | would’ve been nice to see some band members. I mean you could hear the drums and guitar and shit but they were nowhere to be seen, probably in some socially distant bubble. Weeknd looked a bit lonely on-stage. |

02.08.21 | I'm sure everything was prerecorded minus the vox which were apparently live. Those violin parts were pretty hilarious to watch. |

02.08.21 | almost felt like he was trying to be Bruno Mars a bit. I really like The Weeknd’s music, but he just doesn’t have that type of stage presence. |

02.08.21 | My main takeaway was that The Weeknd doesn't really make "Super Bowl Halftime Show" music. This was the most well performed and put together halftime show in a while, and the Weeknd is very obviously a high enough caliber artist to do it, but his music didn't really fit the occasion. Always thought of him as a "chill / drugs / dark driving / bedroom" type artist moreso than a stadium showstopper. Him opening the show with a song as cold and removed as "Starboy" doesn't really set you up for as high of energy performance as you might want from a SB halftime show for instance, as great as that song is. |

02.08.21 | I just think it’s funny he started with the cocaine song, specifically the cocaine line. |

02.08.21 | I definitely saw the guitarist on stage. |

02.08.21 | Also I know I already talked about how cool it was that The Weeknd got to do the show all by himself... but I think not including Daft Punk was a missed opportunity considering how much they collaborate. Like a segue from "I Feel It Coming" into "One More Time" could've been an awesome moment. |

02.08.21 | i was waiting for the breakdown and then blinding lights came on 1/10 could definitely be improved |

02.08.21 | @TheMrAlexK that's actually a great point I never really thought of! |

02.08.21 | Pros: He has an incredible voice, the direction from Oneohtrix Point Never gave some interesting set designs/camera choices people could meme off of (thank christ, because the game was just a slow death for the 2nd half) overall it was entertaining
Cons: As mentioned above, The Weeknd's persona and song themes aren't really suited towards an event like this? They didn't really have time to expand or do anything interesting in structure - It's fine for what it was, I guess.
Mostly, opening with Starboy just made me wish they had Daft Punk play the halftime show. I don't really care what it costs, that would have been a fantastic show. |
