12.09.20 | jus' LPs 'cause boy oh boy if we're talkin everything the Nil Recurring EP is way up there |
OmairSh
12.09.20 | PT list woot woot. Always cool to see how others rank albums and what kind of impact it had. Shows how personal & subjective art is |
Emim
12.09.20 | 1-3 are pretty much interchangeable for me. |
Space Jester
12.09.20 | I like 7 and 9 more than all their other stuff tbh |
porcupinetheater
12.09.20 | Ooh much love Octo but Early PT >>>, 5,8 + 9 are me top 3 |
JohnnyoftheWell
12.09.20 | swap 2 and 9 plz |
porcupinetheater
12.09.20 | And 1 and 8, and then after you've done that, 8 and 10 |
JohnnyoftheWell
12.09.20 | Nah, 1>2 is sound and fair |
OmairSh
12.09.20 | "swap 2 and 9 plz"
God dammit Johnny |
normaloctagon
12.09.20 | haha hi nerds
i know 9 is like quintessential pt or something but it just feels like more of 7, which came before, and does what it does better |
normaloctagon
12.09.20 | like 2 years elapsed b/w 7 and 9 ya know? and that's all we get?
signify is when he started to put his ace atmospheres together with mature songwriting. a lot of stuff before that is an amalgam of influences sauteed with floyd worship--super cool, but nothing that is consistent enough to hit me super hard personally
love that there's a large faction of early era PT heads on this site though |
Djang0
12.09.20 | Sweet list. This band is nearly impossible to rank, so consistent, nearly a straight run of classic albums, and each could have substantive argument for being their best.
I really like the love for Signify. If that was switched with Stupid Dream, however, I'd say that's like the "big 4" and are all mostly interchangeable for me. I'm glad 9 is where it is - kinda overrated imo, though I know it's a fan favorite for some. I really want to do a Steven Wilson/PT/Blackfield ranking list but I'm afraid I might pull my hair out. |
Morningrise767
12.09.20 | top 3 is spot on, although I could swap 1 and 2 depending on my mood |
normaloctagon
12.09.20 | thx djang0! nice to have company on some of those takes haha. a general SW list sounds tuff yeah, I still need to get in to some of that stuff too. I have Insurgentes, no blackfield at all
also, which is the better version for you guys: Sentimental on FOABP or Normal on Nil Recurring EP? : P |
Pikazilla
12.09.20 | 3 is 9
9 is 2
5 is 3 |
BlazinBlitzer
12.09.20 | It supposed to go like this, I believe:
In Absentia > TSMS > Stupid Dream > Signify > Up the Downstair > Deadwing > Lightbulb Sun > FoaBP > The Incident > OtSoL
I appreciate the Signify love, though. |
hel9000
12.09.20 | Stupid Dream is probably my number one at this point. Also I never really got the love for Deadwing |
Keyblade
12.09.20 | it has Arriving |
normaloctagon
12.09.20 | "it has Arriving"
yes
and Glass Arm Shattering |
hel9000
12.09.20 | Call me crazy but Arriving never did much for me at all. Idk though talking about Deadwing is making me want to give it a listen, been a long while |
Pikazilla
12.09.20 | Deadwing is super lame for the most part |
zakalwe
12.09.20 | 4 is 1 |
normaloctagon
12.09.20 | "4 is 1"
5/5 take |
Masochist
12.09.20 | "It has Arriving"
This about sums it up. The rest of the album is also very catchy, mind you, and I love how forward the bass is on a lot of the songs. But "Arriving" is PT's "The Changing of Seasons" or "Echoes" or "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal." |
Coast
12.09.20 | Top 3 yes. I like the debut despite some weird ass tracks. Lightbulb is often ranked high but I can’t get into it. |
normaloctagon
12.09.20 | nice. also didn't know Adrian Belew was featured on deadwing, pretty cool. 80s crimson still probably fave crimson |
JDubb
12.09.20 | 1 is 1. Top 3 is top 3. Nil Recurring would be my 2 if included. |
JohnnyoftheWell
12.09.20 | 4 is 1 [2]
Deadwing is the only PT metal album that belongs in a top 3 |
grandbazaar
12.09.20 | Lightbulb sun is way too low. It's top 5 material for sure. |
Djang0
12.09.20 | Deadwing's t/t is legendary and I never see love for it
"also, which is the better version for you guys: Sentimental on FOABP or Normal on Nil Recurring EP? : P"
Normal is the better track, but Sentimental is better for Foabp, if that makes sense. |
TalonsOfFire
12.09.20 | 2 is 1, 9 is 2, and 5 is 3. Also I like The Incident a lot, but really? 6th place over those three right beneath it? FoaBP has some of their best moments, but the lyrics and various metal sections kind of lower it for me. |
normaloctagon
12.09.20 | yeah I had a tough time leaving the incident above 'up the downstair' but overall I find very early PT to have less oomph, as good as some of it is
disc 2 of the incident alone puts it above 7-10 in my eyes. also, time flies! always loved kneel & disconnect, and your unpleasant family, too. remind me a lot of lightbulb sun
funny you don't like the metal as much in foabp, I think that's actually the album where they really succeeded with that sound, whereas the various metal sections on the incident are *part of* what rly brings it down for me |
BlazinBlitzer
12.10.20 | "2 is 1, 9 is 2, and 5 is 3. Also I like The Incident a lot, but really? 6th place over those three right beneath it? FoaBP has some of their best moments, but the lyrics and various metal sections kind of lower it for me."
The best PT take there is. |
