Sowing's Week 3 Picks

13-3 last week including my upset pick (Raiders over Saints), heading into this week 23-9 on the year. Here's your Week 3 crystal ball. As usual, list is digs.
1Fleet Foxes

Jaguars 23, Dolphins 20 - How this ended up being a featured prime time game is beyond me. Both of these teams have been competitive to start the year though, especially the Jags. I like Minshew-mania to prevail in a closely contested battle of 2020's least exciting teams.
2Fleet Foxes

Bears 26, Falcons 17 - Anyone notice how the Bears' defense has sneakily regained its 2018 form? They looked like monsters against the Lions and Giants, but this is their big-boy test now. The Falcons have one of the best offenses in the league, but I can't imagine the toll that losing to Dallas will have on their psyche after going up 20-0 and 36-24 at separate junctures before coughing up an inexcusable onside kick. The Bears will add some blue to the Falcons' black here.
3Fleet Foxes
Helplessness Blues

Bills 27, Rams 26 - It's tough to imagine two more closely-matched teams at this early point in the year. The Rams have exceeded my expectations for them and look like a legitimate powerhouse. The Bills are my sneaky Superbowl favorites, but have allowed the Jets and Dolphins to play them close. This could go either way, but I'm thinking the Rams' banged-up stable of runningbacks might cost them down the stretch and allow Buffalo's pass rushers to go wild. Bills by a fraction of a hair.

Browns 24, Football Team 20 - This is another game that's tough to call. Neither team is impressive. The Browns have more talent on paper and the Football Team seems to be better disciplined under new head coach Ron Rivera. If Baker Mayfield can avoid getting sacked a bunch of times by Washington's ferocious front-7, then I like Cleveland to prevail in what should be one of the most unremarkable games of the year.

Titans 28, Vikings 23 - I was expecting the Vikings to lose to Green Bay, but when they coughed up the L to Indy, I knew they were in trouble. 0-2 desperation makes teams dangerous, but Tennessee doesn't appear especially vulnerable to an upset right now. They're such a physical and disciplined team that they make you beat them. I'm not convinced the Vikings are up to the task. This might be closer than some will predict, but I fully expect the Titans to start 3-0.

Patriots 27, Raiders 20 - The Raiders are still my dark horse playoff team of 2020, and I rightfully predicted their upset over the Saints - however, the Patriots present a different sort of challenge. Belichick is already proving he can succeed without Brady. To beat the Patriots, you need to play mistake free football and out-savvy their iconic head coach. This young Raiders team doesn't seem like the sort of squad that would beat New England. From their style of play to their youthful roster, it just seems like the kind of game Belichick wins with his mind - even if the teams are about equal on paper.
7Fleet Foxes
Sun Giant

Giants 24, 49ers 21 - Both teams are reeling from injuries, but the 49ers are extra decimated. They will be without Mostert and Coleman, most likely without Garoppolo for one more week, and George Kittle's status is still up in the air. The Giants lost Saquon, but I think the loss of a star runningback is easier to overcome that the 49ers' huge list. It speaks to the Giants' weakness and the 49ers' strength that I still expect this to be a close game. Alas, the superbowl hangover takes another step forward for San Fran.
8Fleet Foxes

Eagles 26, Bengals 24 - If the Eagles can't topple a rebuilding Bengals franchise with a rookie QB, then this might be the last time I place my faith in them. I think both teams are desperate after starting 0-2, but the feeling is a bit different for a team with playoff aspirations. The Eagles should hopefully come out extra motivated after two consecutive embarrassments. I like Joe Burrow to make this a more uncomfortable win that it should be for Philly - the dude has ice in his veins and is going to be great someday.
9Fleet Foxes

Steelers 24, Texans 18 - Count me among the Steelers' believers. Their defense is legitimately championship caliber, which means that Roethlisberger and that offense doesn't need to save the day every Sunday. Meanwhile, the Texans had the misfortune of having to play the Chiefs and Ravens to open the year, so they're probably not as bad as their 0-2 start indicates. Regardless, asking Watson to circumnavigate this monstrous Pittsburg defense isn't exactly the antidote Houston needs.
10Fleet Foxes
Helplessness Blues

Colts 20, Jets 16 - Frank Gore gets to play his old team twice in a row! I guess when you're 64 years old and have played for half of the franchises in the NFL, that's bound to happen. The Jets won't succumb to an 0-3 hole easily, but they will because Adam Gase is a terrible, impersonal coach and human. The Colts grind out an ugly W.
11Fleet Foxes

Chargers 27, Panthers 23 - The Panthers could actually be 2-0 right now if they would put all of the pieces together. Week 1 was lost due to a terrible 4th down play-call, and Week 2 was lost thanks to a bout of preventable turnovers. Now that they've lost McCaffrey for 4-6 weeks with a high ankle sprain, the path to win #1 doesn't get any easier. The Chargers may be starting Taylor or Herbert, but either way they'll outclass a Carolina squad that is down its best player.
12Fleet Foxes

Cardinals 31, Lions 23 - Kyler Murray has skyrocketed in his second year just as I'd predicted (and placed all my fantasy football hopes by drafting him in the 3rd round), and the Cardinals suddenly look like a playoff team. The Lions are still stuck in the same mediocrity as always, keeping some games close but mostly finding ways to lose. These teams tied last year, but Arizona is vastly improved on both sides of the ball and should get the victory this time. Matt Patricia's days in Detroit should be numbered if this year continues to go down the drain for Detroit.

The Electric Lady Session

Bucanneers 28, Broncos 14 - The injury bug hit the entire NFL last weekend, and Denver was not immune - they've lost Sutton for the year and Lock for several weeks. Denver's defense might keep this game close, but the more time Brady has with his offense to more dynamic Tampa Bay will become.

Seahawks 38, Cowboys 31 - This has to be the game of the week (also, for reference, this is my 2020 NFC Championship prediction!). Russell Wilson is absolutely unstoppable, and Dallas' offense came alive last week in that 20-0 comeback win against Atlanta. The game will be decided by the team that makes a crucial defensive stop or two. I think Seattle has the slight edge there.
15Fleet Foxes

Saints 34, Packers 30 - Green Bay has steamrolled to a 2-0 start, while the Saints have looked a bit vulnerable at times and just got upset by Las Vegas. This should be a high scoring affair, but I like New Orleans to rebound this week and hand the Packers their first loss of the season. The game could honestly go either way, though.
16Fleet Foxes

Ravens 33, Chiefs 28 - OK, remember what I said a few lines up about the Seahawks and Cowboys being the game of the week? Nevermind. This is the presumed 2019 AFC Championship that never happened, but we get it now. Both teams are off to torrid hot starts, and have been burying opponents with their prolific offenses. The Chiefs won this tilt last year during the regular season 33-28; I like the Ravens to make things square again by returning the favor this year.
