09.10.20 | no way would I say And Justice for All. I'm used to the drum sound now after listening to the album for years but those are not good sounding drums. Black Album on the other hand, is one of the best produced rock/metal albums ever made imo. if you want a good sounding snare listen to literally the first second of Don't Tread on Me. the thing is beefy as hell. |

09.12.20 | I get ya. I've been playing for 12 years but its really only been the last 3 to 4 years that I've gotten super nerdy about drum sound in albums. There are some albums I used to like that I find hard to listen to now because the drum sound is too synthetic sounding (something a lot of modern tech/prog metal and just a lot of post 2000 metal in general suffer from).
Really like that live drum sound that a lot of 80s and 90s metal has. Modern production and triggering sucks the life out of the kit especially snare and kick
Sorry for the rant lol |

10.24.20 | "Really like that live drum sound that a lot of 80s and 90s metal has. Modern production and triggering sucks the life out of the kit especially snare and kick"
While I totally get this opinion and personally love real drums with some compression and EQ, some metal has evolved with techniques so fast they cant be heard loud enough to be played live (heel toe, blastbeats, etc). Fallujah would be a good example of this
|
chemicalmarriage
10.24.20 | Devin townsend for sure. Takin that black album to the next level |
chemicalmarriage
10.24.20 | "The drums are perfection but the music is stale bread."
Crouton is the preferred nomenclature. |
Madbutcher3
10.24.20 | triggers are useful for modern metal but excessively compressed and overbearing drum sounds are really common and are either tiring or sound like garbage
also forgot but Mercyful Fate - Melissa has a great drum sound and good snare |
Eakflanderyof
10.24.20 | Yeah i get why bands need triggers using advanced techniques at fast tempos and the like but im kind of a boomer about it I guess. Its impressive, but like madbutcher said, it's tiring to listen to. I can't listen to overly triggered drums for very long |
Madbutcher3
10.24.20 | the triggers aren't really the problem usually, it's how they're used with compression and limiting. kick drum samples are usually super scooped, tonnes of bass and clicky attack, so pushing them with tonnes of compression tends to lead to a lot of extreme frequencies constantly. the trick is probably using a more natural sound and compressing that, and leaving the triggers fairly dry |
Eakflanderyof
10.24.20 | Well yeah, that's what I mean when I say overly triggered even though that's not the proper way to describe it. I don't mind kick drum triggers live. I've used a kick trigger live myself in fact. It's the mix of drum samples and editing in the studio that kills the drum sound for me. Takes all the life out of it |
Sinternet
10.24.20 | probably morbid angel with the best drum sound ever in metal probably |
TheAntichrist
10.24.20 | covenant for best drum sound imo. those bass drums in particular sound so powerful |
Eakflanderyof
10.24.20 | Agreed hard on morbid angel. That's like the prime example of that live drum sound i was referring to for early 90s metal. Sandoval pulled off some incredibly fast and clean playing with all natural drums. All his fills are so tight and clean, it makes me wanna quit playing lol |
TheAntichrist
10.24.20 | he beat a drum machine at its own game lol |
Eakflanderyof
10.24.20 | I mean, it goes without saying, but morbid angel was really just on another level |
Hyperion1001
10.24.20 | which is funny because sandoval helped popularize the use of triggers live back in the day.
and yeah, acoustic vs. triggers doesn't matter. most acoustic are replaced with samples in postproduction anyways. as long as you have a engineer who knows how to mix it's usually a good result. |
Eakflanderyof
10.24.20 | Yep, I'm not contradicting any of that really. I've been in the studio to record multiple albums and that's absolutely the case. Overcompression and over editing is more of a problem in the djent/core genres than anywhere else where its done to the point that it sounds like electronic drums. But yeah, pretty much every engineer uses drum replacement for sure |
Eakflanderyof
10.24.20 | Whoops double post |

10.24.20 | Post a link to your music eakflander I wanna check out your drum tones |

10.25.20 | sandoval used triggers from domination onward i think or to some degree in the studio earlier, but his kit sound on covenant is really amazing |
TheAntichrist
10.25.20 | i can tell he used them on domination. they sound like shit, but at least the album and his playing are good |

11.25.20 | Kudos man cool list! I like how you put “And Justice For All” on there, I hear plenty people complain about the sounds on that album but it’s my personal favorite Metallica album and I love Ulrich’s drum sound on it. I’d love to hear if you like any of these that I personally would add: Infester - “To the Depths In Degredation,” Eucharist- “A Velvet Creation,” Massacre - “From Beyond.” |
Rowhaus
11.25.20 | Sweet recs. I haven't listened to Infester in forever and Massacre basically took a nosedive after their debut. |
