SPUTAGORIES: Sloth Vs Minus

Game rules are simple; Sloth picks 5 categories, Minus picks 5 categories. Then both participants chose an album for each category, 10 albums in total. The album has to be one the other does not know well, or at all. Each album submitted by the other user will be critiqued, discussed and rated. The winner is determined by the accumulative score of the 10 albums ratings. Whoever recommended the 10 albums with the highest score wins. Let the fun begin.

Toots, is another artist I have heard a lot of, but never listened to a full album back to front. I feel like this record needs to be spun on vinyl with large speakers situated outside, on a beach, as i sip on a Red Stripe. It is hard to go back to this album, as i over-listened to the reworked "True Love" versions of a lot of these tracks with guest performers. So trying to put that out of my head, this is a classic reggae album, slow chill jams, with important messages. Vocals are soulfully bliss, backing vocals work, but I don't need them. Musically it is reggae, makes you smile, and gets my feet bopping. Added to my next vacation playlist.

Minus Rec: Sloth's Rating 4.4.
Bikini Kill, is a name that is very familiar, conjuring up the whole riot grrrrl image. I have listened to their tracks, but never taken the time to delve into a full album, which is surprising given all the new generation of female fronted angsty punk i now listen to, more often then not, were influenced by Bikini Kill, or bands that followed in the continuum of the riot grrrl movement. So onto the album, this is raw, dirty, angry hardcore punk. Vocalist, Kathleen Hanna, doesn't owe you nothing, the opening lines she belts out, setting the tone for the upcoming album. Not afraid to shock and not one to hold back, Hanna passionately, sings, screams and liberates her listening audience with feminism 101. Musically it is also great, guitars are messy, grungy, fast and compliment Hanna's energy. Bass-lines are memorable, and drums are great
7Seth Sentry
This Was Tomorrow

Category 4: RHYME SPITTAS. Artist has to be either Hip Hop, Rap, or Slam Poetry.
Sloth Rec: Minus Rating: 4.2
I am such a sucker for this style of hip-hop. Seth Sentry would fit comfortably in the Rhymesayers Crew (which P.O.S is from) with his brand of alternative rock infused hip-hop. Songs about not belonging to a particular niche, having a shitty job, failing relationships, and piss that you don’t have a hoverboard a plenty here. The beats here are excellent as is the general production, it is surprising this hasn’t been bigger in the midwest hip-hop scene, Seth’s flow is effortless. If you’ve been craving a great Atmosphere record lately, stop dealing with Slug and jam some Seth Sentry instead.
Favorite Tracks: Ten Paces, My Scene, Langolier’s Banquet

Never Better

Category 4: RHYME SPITTAS. Artist has to be either Hip Hop, Rap, or Slam Poetry.
Minus Rec: Sloth Rating: 4.3
This is my style of hip hop, similar vibe to Sage Francis and Atmosphere. Coming from a punk rock background, P.O.S. brings something unique to his flows, there are also guest hardcore screams, punky drums, and guitar riffs scattered throughout the album. But it isn't the punk connection that makes this a great album, it is the insightful lyrics ranging from politics to self worth through a rambling thought process, tremendous flow, and all round great songwriting and production.

Category 5: LOCAL GEM. Artist has to be from 50km of where you currently reside, were born or grew up.
Sloth Rec: Minus Rating: 3.9
A legendary skate punk band that I have minimal experience with. If you told me this was released in ‘98 I would not have batted an eye. Really the only thing “modern” about this record are some tasty hardcore vox sprinkled throughout the record. If ya like NOFX, Lagwagon, or other nasally melodic hardcore bands you’re gonna dig this one, cause they do it better than most. The vocals and high energy get a bit much near the end, and this album would have been greatly improved with a cut song or two. This still slams, and is up there with Wilhelm in terms of skate punk bands.

Comedy albums are super hit or miss for me, and considering this is coming from one of the minds from Limp Bizkit, I was a bit apprehensive. I didn’t really know what to expect from this besides it being goofy nonsense, and that is sort of what I got. There’s really only two styles of music on this album, which is disappointing because I expected there to be a lot more genre hopping. There’s the brutal slam death metal style, with growls I don’t really dig at all and then songs that are essentially just Ween songs. I dig the Ween songs a whole lot more than the death metal songs, but I don’t really see myself coming back to any of this unfortunately.

A very pretty spiritual folk record from an indigenous Australian man. He has a gorgeous, smooth voice that lends itself wonderfully to the music. The key factor to this album is that it is almost entirely in his own native tongue, it is a truly beautiful listen. That being said, this album grew off of me with repeated listens, as it suffers from the monotonous “pretty folk” sound that makes it hard to distinguish tracks apart from each other, and all too easy to forget as time goes on. I am also disappointed on how this is a very “western” folk record, and it would have been nice to hear more traditional aboriginal influence on here. These are minor gripes though, this album all in all is a gem.
