07.30.20 | best list ever |
Joeman82
07.30.20 | Very great list, but mine would probably have Buddy Rich and Neil Peart. |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | "but mine would probably have Buddy Rich and Neil Peart"
great choices |
SlothcoreSam
07.30.20 | Josh Freese deserves an honorable mention. |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | Can't fit everybody in a top 10. Dave Weckl, Marco Minnemann, Bonham etc etc all deserve a honorable mention |
Eakflanderyof
07.30.20 | Solid list. Props for inclusion of Phil Collins. A lot of people don't realize how great he actually was because they only know his solo work and later genesis |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | when people shit on Collins just play them Nuclear Burn by Brand X. That'll shut them up |
SteakByrnes
07.30.20 | Sweet list brother, Jeff Porcaro is a good shout |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | thanks dud Porcaro is a G |
Joeman82
07.30.20 | Any drummer who worked with Zappa pretty much had to be one of the best of all time lol |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | pretty much yeah |
Jots
07.30.20 | almost need a separate list for jazz drummers tbh. Gene Krupa, Art Blakey, Lionel Hampton, etc, u know what it is |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | yeah I'm not balls deep into jazz so that's really not my area of expertise. |
WalrusTusk
07.30.20 | Thomas Pridgeon? |
Emim
07.30.20 | "when people shit on Collins just play them Nuclear Burn by Brand X. That'll shut them up"
I feel like the people that shit on Phil usually aren't drummers themselves. |
Eakflanderyof
07.30.20 | "I feel like the people that shit on Phil usually aren't drummers themselves"
That and most people know him for that famous drum fill everyone knows and it's a pretty simple fill |
Joeman82
07.30.20 | I mean I’m a drummer and I can appreciate his ability to sing and play but like if it was my choice for drummer/singer Donovan Melero of Hail the Sun is kinda nuts. |
SteakByrnes
07.30.20 | Donovan is insane, shout out to Joseph Arrington too |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | "I mean I’m a drummer and I can appreciate his ability to sing and play but like if it was my choice for drummer/singer Donovan Melero of Hail the Sun is kinda nuts."
But could you play Nuclear Burn |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | "uh ur missing zach hill from the death grips" Nah. There are about a 100 drummers I could name that would be above him |
MillionDead
07.30.20 | Not a lot of metal/punk love here but I definitely think there's an argument for everyone mentioned here.
"Nah. There are about a 100 drummers I could name that would be above him."
100?! BS. Zach Hill is definitely one of the best to do it if you ask me. The shit he does in his math rock group, Hella, changed the way I understood drums after I heard it. Especially what's possible with one pedal. Watch this shit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PafUgFiaaw
We also need to add Chris "Daddy" Dave to the discussion. Jamie Saint Merat from Ulcerate deserves some credit too. Ben Koller from Converge. Casey Hansen from Cult Leader and Gaza. Brian Harvey from the early Pig Destroyer days. Dave Witte, especially on the Discordance Axis recordings.
Also, this list's jazz picks are kinda stuck in the past, though Elvin Jones is definitely one of my fucking favorite musicians ever. Mark Guiliana, Justin Faulkner, and Eric Harland are ALL some of the best doing it today. |
avery14th
07.30.20 | list is cool love attention for these dudes
question out of genuine ignorance - does anyone know some female drummers who stand up to these guys? would be cool to check. I've seen plenty of great ones, but I mean like the level of greatness this list is showing off |
robertsona
07.30.20 | she's completely obscure and it depends veeeeery heavily on liking "feel" more than technical ability but I've seen the NYC band Gustaf with the drummer Rosie Slater maybe 4x and she's the best live drummer i've ever seen, metronomic and whacks those drums HARD. simple beats but the power is incredible. she also drums with her arms uncrossed (left = hi hat right = snare) which is weird and fun to watch |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | "Also, this list's jazz picks are kinda stuck in the past" It's a top 10 dude.
Not a lot of room for many jazz picks considering I'm not a huge jazz aficionado. Elvin Jones is the only pure jazz drummer on here though all the others definitely have a huge jazz influence in their drumming |
MillionDead
07.30.20 | @robertsona: Drumming like that is termed "open-handed". It's pretty interesting and rare but definitely not unheard of. I think a lot of ambidextrous or left-handed people drum that way as to not rearrange the whole kit, but there's an argument for the ergonomics of it as well. Definitely checking out Gustaf in a sec though. |
Joeman82
07.30.20 | Oh see the thing was I wasn’t detracting Collins at all I was just saying if I had to pick one hypothetically I’d go with Donovan. Both are wonderfully talented.
And yeah drumming open-handed apparently changes how you do fills and flow of the kit to the point where even some right handers do it. |
avery14th
07.30.20 | I couldn't find her with Gustaf but found her in a band called New Myths. Interesting, I've never actually seen an open-handed drummer live, p cool. Probably allows her to whack those drums like that live |
botb
07.30.20 | Ok boomer
Big ups for billy cobham tho for real |
botb
07.30.20 | Also miss me with that Zach hill shit, cool you can play a million notes per second, play something that’s musical please |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | can we all agree though that this is one of the greatest drumming videos of all times:

07.30.20 | This is basically a "drummer's favourite drummers" list |
Joeman82
07.30.20 | I would also like to give a mention to Rob Bernknopf of Icarus The Owl. Dude plays some insanely saucey stuff. Peep the songs Werewolf Tea Party and Mantis as examples. |
Joeman82
07.30.20 | That Gadd video is a classic but nothing beats the Purdie Shuffle video |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | that purdie video is funny as fuck yeah but as far as watching 3 legends chopping it up, nothing beats the Gadd/Weckl/Colaiuta one |
Joeman82
07.30.20 | Fair enough |
robertsona
07.30.20 | elvin jones is definitely my favorite drummer though |
FR33L0RD
07.30.20 | Not a serious list, if Neil Peart is not in there. And Phil Collins is not that good. Sorry |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | "Not a serious list, if Neil Peart is not in there. And Phil Collins is not that good. Sorry"
Neil Peart is a great drummer. Would make my top 20 I think. As far as Phil Collins goes, you should really listen to that Brand X album I think. He's pretty fucking good |
MillionDead
07.30.20 | I meant to also say that Cobham is probably top 2 for me. Dude was just something out of this world. And Zach Hill works for me on this abrasive, harsh, abstract art level. I definitely think it's unmusical for many contexts but in the contexts that he plays for, namely with Hella. He'd never be right for a Hendrix cover band but it's really some of the best and most brutal drumming I've ever heard.
Also, Erik from this skramz band Lord Snow. He's fucking artist and will never be recognized enough. Kind of like a more lyrical Zach Hill with less footwork. I study this live set an unhealthy amount, trying to figure out what he's doing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_p7m3xxYgc |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | I only know Zach Hill from his work with Death Grips I will check Hella out |
MillionDead
07.30.20 | Hold Your Horse Is is Hella's first and best record. No further listening needed tbh. Tripper's great too if you're feeling extracurricular. |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | I am listening to biblical violence right now and it's making me nauseous |
wildinferno2010
07.30.20 | Dammit Free, Phil Collins rules. That Brand X album has loads of cool drum shit, and there are so many Genesis songs with absolutely legendary grooves
Also, I hate the term "unmusical" when it comes to drumming. It's just a way for jaded old drummers to dismiss music that doesn't groove in a way they find acceptable - usually because they're veering too far from playing like John Bonham. Context is everything |
MillionDead
07.30.20 | @Reef: Well Hella makes people nauseous, but so does LSD. Sometimes the experience is WORTH IT.
@FR33LORD: "Phil Collins is not that good." You are on CRACK.
@wildinferno: Agreed. So much is down to taste and your ear. A lot of people haven't made peace with the fact that music can be ANYTHING. |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | "Well Hella makes people nauseous" I appreciate the drumming but I would never ever listen to that. That was really unpleasant to me haha |
MillionDead
07.30.20 | Lmao fair, it's definitely not for everybody. I honestly feel like Zappa would fuck with something like Hella though.
But please bro, watch and listen to this beat at 6:18 in this vid. It's hands down one of the best things I've ever heard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_p7m3xxYgc |
YoYoMancuso
07.30.20 | In terms of technical ability alone Matt Garstka has to be the GOAT. I went to a clinic he did and it just bent my mind in all sorts of different directions |
Dedes
07.30.20 | Unearths drummers is p fucking gnarly |
zakalwe
07.30.20 | Keith Moon |
Jots
07.30.20 | yeah I’m no old head rly but the loon is kinda a default top 10 drummer |
ReefaJones
07.30.20 | And who would you replace on my list with moon? Just curious |
MillionDead
07.30.20 | @YoYo: He's one of the goats for sure. Wouldn't say THE. Definite doing a lot of legwork to push the art form forward, almost scientifically. Frankly, there are quite a few drummers that might be technically comparable, just in different musical lanes.
@Zak: He's not a goat for me, but I definitely get where he's exciting to listen to. |

MillionDead
07.31.20 | Sean Reinert of Cynic and Death fame. |

07.31.20 | I recently got into stuff featuring Elvin Jones and man, he¡s a beast. Max Roach is another favorite of mine, along with Stuart Copeland from The Police, John Bonham from Led Zep, and Danny Carey from Tool. Of recent drummers I'd say Zack Hill from Death Grips and Hella, and Brian Chippendale from Lightning Bolt are both favorites. |
MillionDead
07.31.20 | @Dewinged: You might dig Erik from Lord Snow and you'd probably be into Greg Saunier from Deerhoof. |
Dewinged
07.31.20 | Oh I love Saunier, he is super creative and also a really fun dude. Don't know Erik, will check his stuff out, tx! |

07.31.20 | And ofc Haake and Peart. |
ReefaJones
07.31.20 | Yeah there are a lot of guys out there who are great drummers but didn't make it into this top 10 |
MillionDead
07.31.20 | Chris Pennie is most definitely not talked about enough. Neither are Billy Rymer or Gil Sharone for that matter. Dillinger consistently had great drummers. |
YoYoMancuso
07.31.20 | billy rymer absolutely shredding mike portnoy in a drum-off is one of my favorite moments in recorded history |
MillionDead
07.31.20 | lmao Bro, he made Portnoy look like a turd. Did not hold back AT ALL. |
MillionDead
07.31.20 | @ampharos4life: I didn't realize how on point you were with your list or that I'd heard all of them before. lmao toe, Boredoms, Ling Tosite Sigure, and Don Caballero are all INSANE bands with ridiculous drumming. I honestly don't have as much experience with Can despite having heard great things. |
Titan
07.31.20 | Silly list without Peart top 10 |
Eakflanderyof
07.31.20 | Peart is amazing but it's hardly silly. There are a lot of drummers on peart's level |

07.31.20 | Colaiuta and Bruford are among my favorites. Nice choices. |

07.31.20 | Where is Ringo Starr? Where is Danny Carey?
"This is basically a "drummer's favourite drummers" list" x3 |
botb
07.31.20 | My current favorites are Nick Yacyshyn of Baptists/SUMAC, Tyler Coburn of Yautja/Thou, James Beveredge of Portrayal of Guilt, and Baard Kolstaad of Leprous. My personal number 1 will probably always be Jon Theodore on the first 3 Mars Volta records though |
ReefaJones
07.31.20 | "Where is Ringo Starr? Where is Danny Carey?"
Maybe you missed them. Try taking a closer look |
botb
07.31.20 | @wildcard Ben Koller isn’t like particularly mind blowing as far as chops goes, like he’s never played anything on record I ever thought I couldn’t play. It’s just he’s absolutely rock solid and has this uncanny ability to always know the perfect part to play. |
MillionDead
07.31.20 | Idk, Ben Koller doesn’t play that way all the time, but he really does a lot of insane chops on songs like Black Cloud or Aimless Arrow, with little to no double kick. Plus I really think Ben’s playing inspires a lot of metallic hardcore drumming today. Nick Yacyshyn is probably the best new drummer. So creative. Tyler Colburn does awesome shit to make up for not having a double pedal. I met James Beveredge when I saw Portrayal of Guilt and made a point to tell him how much I admired his playing. Jon Theodore his a king of blending technical ability with taste but I think I might prefer the masturbatory nature of Pridgen. Theodore was obviously on better albums though. |

11.24.20 | By only including old rock, old jazz, and old fusion drummers, you seem pretty out of touch. lol There are whole worlds of equally great drumming apart from this. |
Rowhaus
11.24.20 | No love for Kenny Clarke? Gene Hoglan? Jaime St Merat? Keith Moon? Portnoy? List is great tho. Can't really throw shade at any of these players. |

11.24.20 | "ask his 3 ex wives" Ah sorry I#m not into celebrity gossip. What did he do to them? |
ReefaJones
11.24.20 | "By only including old rock, old jazz, and old fusion drummers, you seem pretty out of touch. lol There are whole worlds of equally great drumming apart from this."
I mean I included Minnemann and Harrison those 2 are from a newer generation. These new guys have to make their mark first otherwise you can't expect me to put them next to these legends. I am 28 btw. |
Emim
11.24.20 | How bout some Carter Beauford? |
ReefaJones
11.24.20 | Beauford is an amazing drummer, yes. |
Emim
11.24.20 | Also he's more of an educator these days, but Mike Johnston is a brilliant player and just a good dude. One of these days I'll go to his drum camp, especially since he's only like 30min from here. |

MillionDead
11.25.20 | " I am 28 btw." And still woefully out of touch. Idk how you turn into such a dad before 30 lol. Lmao imagine thinking of Gavin Harrison as part of a newer generation; dude started recording before we were born. And furthermore, there are lots of metal and punk drummers you missed even from the times that most of your picks come from, probably cause you don't listen to that stuff but still. Buddy Rich is also overrated af as a jazz drummer. A lot other greats can just do fast chops all day, but they liked to make a more nuanced statement. I'd replace Buddy Rich with Art Blakey.
It's really like you've missed the last 50 years of drumming though. Nate Smith? Jojo fuckin' Mayer? Antonio Sanchez? Benny Greb? Thomas Pridgen? Brann Dailor? |
ReefaJones
11.25.20 | Out of touch because I put these names in my list? Like how could you even argue that these guys aren't amongst the all time greatest drummers. They might not make your top 20 but they better be in everyones top 50. Just being a great drummer doesn't cut it either if you play in bands that don't have made any impact at all. These guys have played with some of the greatest musicians ever and played in some of the greatest bands ever. The guys you mention don't even come close lmao. Fucking zoomer |
MillionDead
11.25.20 | I'm 25, clown. lol The guys I've mentioned are better drummers than a few of these guys just by virtue of being current. Thomas Pridgen played with The Mars Volta, you gonna tell me they were never relevant? Or Mastodon was never relevant with Brann Dailor? Or Antonio Sanchez isn't relevant when he played one of the most acclaimed recent movie soundtracks of all time with solo drumkit on Birdman? Your field of view is just narrow. It's not like you have bad taste in all this old music, it's just funny how you act like it's the most relevant.
"The guys you mention don't even come close lmao." Have you actually watched/heard any of them play? Lol that sounds so stupid. |

If you ever watched Jojo Mayer or Benny Greb play jazz, you'd know they positively wreck Joe Morello's ass. Handedly. They have the expanded rhythmic knowledge of the future on their side, with equal if not greater talent. Like how any geneticist in 2020 probably has far better access to knowledge of genes than Charles Darwin did in the 1800's. You just love old man music beyond nuance or reason, Reef. |

I never said musical ability doesn't matter. All the names on my list have great technique. That alone doesn't make you an all time great though. |

11.25.20 | Ah Jojo Mayer the guy whose claim to fame is playing jungle beats. I'll take Joe Morello over that guy 100/100 times, thanks. |

I mean It's a mix of both. I greatly enjoy the music these guys have been involved in. Make no mistake, these are absolutely my favorite drummers but that's in large part due to the music they played, which I love. |
ReefaJones
11.25.20 | lmao you are so easy to trigger. While you are at it, you might want to ask those "REAL DRUMMERS" what they think about the names on this list. They'll tell you themselves that they don't come close to any of the names on here. |

11.25.20 | @MillionDead
Yup and no one cares about modern Jazz lmao. Also, you seem super fixated on technique and nothing else matters to you but none of the guys you mentioned could even dream of playing a groove like Jeff Porcaro or Steve Gadd could. On top of that, guys like Colaiuta, Bozzio, Harrison, Minnemann, Cobham etc could absolutely play anything the guys you mentioned can play. I'm sure that goes the other way around too. It's almost like playing actual great music matters too. |

11.25.20 | I just remembered that you are the guy with the "you don't like hip hop" take that hasn't even listened to a Kool G Rap album. You are an annoying, autistic shit head |
MillionDead
11.25.20 | Cause you only like hip hop if you've heard Kool G Rap and think RTJ 4 is the 10TH BEST HIP HOP RECORD OF ALL TIME |
ReefaJones
11.25.20 | if you are going to play hip hop authority you better have listened to Kool G Rap. What a joke lmao |
MillionDead
11.25.20 | Nah dude, I don’t claim to be an authority. That list just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Hardly anyone puts Kool G Rap in their tops because the music is cheesy and dated, despite being pivotal to the time period and still good. Lots of motherfuckers in the world LOVE hip hop and don’t listen to Kool G Rap. But I guess you have to fellate old music as always. |
ReefaJones
11.25.20 | you're an endless ocean of shitty takes. Go on. |

11.25.20 | Travis Barker is clearly the best drummer ever lmao |
porcupinetheater
11.25.20 | I think Tre is one of the greats |
AlexKzillion
11.25.20 | Travis Barker is the only reason Blink 182 is even half listenable so he very well could be. |
Emim
11.25.20 | "Ah Jojo Mayer the guy whose claim to fame is playing jungle beats. I'll take Joe Morello over that guy 100/100 times, thanks."
Bro you need to check yourself. This "my drummer can beat up your drummer" shit is weak af |
Emim
11.25.20 | Jojo Mayer is one of the best of all time, I don't think any self-respecting drummer would try to argue otherwise. |
YoYoMancuso
11.25.20 | how bout some love for Tony Williams? |
Egarran
11.25.20 | Still trying to make hip-hop a thing lol |
MillionDead
11.25.20 | "I don't think any self-respecting drummer would try to argue otherwise." Thing about Reef is I don't think he's a self respecting anything. Plus, I swear he probably didn't even know that Jojo existed til last night lol.
@Yoyo: Hell yes. Tony Williams is an easy pick. Love his work in Miles Davis's 2nd quintet the most, but his fusion stuff is golden as well. Dude's so fast and athletic. Like a windup monkey. He pulls out very high concept licks and textures too. |
Emim
11.25.20 | One guy I've been digging a lot lately is Larnell Lewis. Dude is a fantastic drummer just seems like a great guy. |
MillionDead
11.25.20 | Oh, dude's a PAINTER behind the kit. One of my fav vids, right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1nnfqkv5WY |
Emim
11.25.20 | Ooh that's tasty. The scrolling transcription is a great idea too. |
MillionDead
11.25.20 | Yeah, that page has a ton of videos of that ilk that I've studied. Very useful tool for understanding some of the wacked out stuff these guys do! |

11.27.20 | Just check Larnell Lewis and my god what a player. Didn't know he was in Snarky Puppy either |
wham49
11.27.20 | no Bill Ward, Buddy Miles, Keith Moon, Bill Kreutzman, Dave Lomboardo, Phil Taylor, The Animal |
Jethro42
11.27.20 | I really like this list. Jojo Mayer is missing, tho. |
MillionDead
11.27.20 | If you guys wanna see another jazz cat to rule them all, check Ralph Peterson. Little more oldschool than Larnell but no less amazing. Was obsessed with his playing in college.

MillionDead
11.27.20 | Man, I need to make my own drummers and guitarists and bassists lists |
ReefaJones
11.27.20 | "I really like this list. Jojo Mayer is missing, tho."
I did consider him but unfortunately there's only room for 20 names here so some are not gonna make it |
MillionDead
11.27.20 | Lmao You didn't even know Jojo Mayer existed til I brought him up, don't flex. |
ReefaJones
11.27.20 | "Lmao You didn't even know Jojo Mayer existed til I brought him up, don't flex."
lmao you're just a super annoying obnoxious asshole so I just continued to trigger your ass. I obviously knew who he is and I also know the drummers who he inspired (louis Cole, JD Beck) |
MillionDead
11.27.20 | Lmao only one of us is constantly triggered and I believe it's you. lol But yeah I don't think you'd say ignorant shit like "None of those names even COME CLOSE to the guys on my list" for the whole world to see if you weren't ignorant about their playing in the first place. Idk, you just cap a whole lot dude. |
ReefaJones
11.27.20 | It's you who came in here shouting out names saying they are far better than the names on this list. You have zero self awareness my dude. Next time be a little bit more respectful in expressing your opinions and the responses you get will reflect that. |
MillionDead
11.27.20 | I never said anyone was FAR better, except when I said Jojo and someone else wreck Joe Morello. I said "Some of these drummers are better than a few of the drummers on your list by virtue of being current." Don't misquote me. Also, what makes you think I'm interested in your respect? lmao That's a great joke. First funny thing you've said in your whole Sput tenure in fact. |
ReefaJones
11.27.20 | got any more drummers you found on drumeo? lmao get your goofy ass out of here |
MillionDead
11.27.20 | Lmao MILLIONS of drummers go to drumeo to learn. Why wouldn't some of the best in the world pop up on the platform at least some of the time? Bernie Perdie was on Drumeo. Quit saying dumb shit like it's clever. That said, I listen to my favorite drummers' records too. Idk, half the names I've mentioned are nowhere near drumeo. |
MillionDead
11.27.20 | I'd take this dude Erik, from an comparatively unknown underground screamo band, over Peart. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYgzQ6TkaI0 |

rellik009
11.27.20 | Million and Reefa are we seriously out here hissing at each other over drummers
lmao you two must be some of the worst goofs I've seen on this website
not like I should say anything, but luv u tho |
LeddSledd
11.27.20 | no he's the greatest drummar of all tiem |

11.27.20 | yes 👍 |

11.27.20 | professionals have standards |
LeddSledd
11.27.20 | if he was able to play in 5/8 then he would be a bad drummer
luckily, mason knows this and refuses to play anything but standard time signatures. that in itself is indicative of his great quality as a drummer |

11.27.20 | lol |

11.27.20 | "jim gordon"
Now here is a name that I totally forgot when making this list. Killer drummer and Jeff Porcaros idol. Also killed his mother lmao. |

11.27.20 | “Over drummers”
Nah, I just like talking shit to Reef |
Emim
11.27.20 | "got any more drummers you found on drumeo? lmao get your goofy ass out of here"
Gavin Harrison and Purdie have both been featured on Drumeo. Don't come at my man Jared Falk, like that. |
MillionDead
11.27.20 | Idk who my fav is. That's way too hard, given how most people on this advanced level just give something unique and worthwhile to the artform. That's why I just don't play favorites in life. Too many great things in this world. |

TheAntichrist
11.28.20 | 20 is 1 |
MillionDead
11.28.20 | "subscribed to Zildjian and Drumeo on Youtube"
Don't forget Meinl (my preference over Zildjian tbh)! And Sweetwater and Memphis Drumshop for all the sweet drum gear and demos. Also, I just listen to a ton of great drummers that you don't just by virtue of listening to more kinds of music than you lol. |
rellik009
11.28.20 | ok MillionDead, ok. Poppin off a little hard but ok |
wildinferno2010
11.28.20 | Just gonna drop in to say that the best educational drum channel is Rob Brown's, hands down |
TheAntichrist
11.28.20 | you're an educational drum channel |
wildinferno2010
11.28.20 | Thank you |
MillionDead
11.28.20 | I LOVE Rob Brown's stuff. And 80/20 Drummer too. |
wildinferno2010
11.28.20 | 80/20 drummer is soooo good. Been binging his channel heaps lately. |
wildinferno2010
11.28.20 | Also just discovered Mike Johnston, dude seems like another legend. Vibe is almost like where drumming and personal development meet. Dude's such a natural teacher |
ReefaJones
11.28.20 | "yooo my man gavin. was recently talking about how he's probably my fave contemporary drummer"
this is some of my favorite drumming by him. So fucking on point:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5nAA_QXBPY
especially everything from 6:36 onward is fucking incredible |
MillionDead
11.28.20 | "Also just discovered Mike Johnston" Yeah, I have him subbed but I haven't watched one of his lessons in a while. I feel like he usually doesn't actually play music I fuck with but he has incredible feel. Another absolute MONSTER is Carter Mclean. It's so life changing to watch that dude just demo cymbals, heads, etc. So tasteful and clean. I used to watch Orlando Drummer a lot too, for his chop vids, but he doesn't post much anymore and his last couple were kinda underwhelming. Also, his hair is dumb. |
wildinferno2010
11.28.20 | Yeah, Johnston's whole shtick is that he's an educator. He's one of the best I've come across so far, though.
Carter McLean is cool, never heard of Orlando drummer tho, will check |
ReefaJones
11.28.20 | Stevie Wonder also knew how to lay down a mean beat:

MillionDead
11.28.20 | "Yeah, Johnston's whole shtick is that he's an educator. He's one of the best I've come across so far, though."
Yeah, the dude is excellent. I just mean that some of the instrumentals he'll play on sound a bit Nashville to me haha. Same with Stephen Taylor sometimes. But another drum channel you might like is rdavidr, if you don't already know it. He doesn't cover any advanced playing concepts, he's just a good solid player. But his main draw for me is DIY building and refurbishing that he'll do for equipment. He has vids where he sound proofs his own studio, or refinishes drums and changes heads, mods/builds cymbals, etc. Really fun stuff. |
rellik009
11.29.20 | "What about the guy who played the Pornhub theme at his school assembly"

11.29.20 | "Yeah, the dude is excellent. I just mean that some of the instrumentals he'll play on sound a bit Nashville to me haha. Same with Stephen Taylor sometimes."
Well Taylor is a Nashville kind of drummer, lol. I do wish Johnston would play a little more "actual" music, but the man's heart for teaching is just so big. He's also a pretty good videographer. |
Egarran
11.29.20 | I swear I replied to sint. Did he get erased from history? |
bloaf38
12.09.20 | Interesting pick for no. 1. I have to listen to Joe's Garage again.....good list though. Tim Alexander from Primus is really good. He'd be up there for me. Also Danny Carey from Tool. I like that Stewart Copeland is being recognized as one of the best. I've been listening to the Police a lot lately and the guy is an animal. |
ReefaJones
12.09.20 | There is no specific order to this list though Vinnie might as well be no. 1
Joe's Garage was very early in his career so I would urge you to listen to his later work also to get a full picture.
Since you like The Police: Vinnie also was the drummer on Ten Summoner's Tales and some other Sting records |
ReefaJones
02.16.22 | list still stands tbh but I replaced Buddy Rich with Jaki Liebezeit |
