Also, this list's jazz picks are kinda stuck in the past, though Elvin Jones is definitely one of my fucking favorite musicians ever. Mark Guiliana, Justin Faulkner, and Eric Harland are ALL some of the best doing it today.

robertsona 07.30.20	she's completely obscure and it depends veeeeery heavily on liking "feel" more than technical ability but I've seen the NYC band Gustaf with the drummer Rosie Slater maybe 4x and she's the best live drummer i've ever seen, metronomic and whacks those drums HARD. simple beats but the power is incredible. she also drums with her arms uncrossed (left = hi hat right = snare) which is weird and fun to watch

Elvin Jones is the only pure jazz drummer on here though all the others definitely have a huge jazz influence in their drumming
MillionDead 07.30.20	@robertsona: Drumming like that is termed "open-handed". It's pretty interesting and rare but definitely not unheard of. I think a lot of ambidextrous or left-handed people drum that way as to not rearrange the whole kit, but there's an argument for the ergonomics of it as well. Definitely checking out Gustaf in a sec though.

And yeah drumming open-handed apparently changes how you do fills and flow of the kit to the point where even some right handers do it.

I definitely think it's unmusical for many contexts but in the contexts that he plays for, namely with Hella. He'd never be right for a Hendrix cover band but it's really some of the best and most brutal drumming I've ever heard. Also, Erik from this skramz band Lord Snow. He's fucking artist and will never be recognized enough. Kind of like a more lyrical Zach Hill with less footwork. botb 07.31.20	@wildcard Ben Koller isn’t like particularly mind blowing as far as chops goes, like he’s never played anything on record I ever thought I couldn’t play. It’s just he’s absolutely rock solid and has this uncanny ability to always know the perfect part to play.
MillionDead 07.31.20	Idk, Ben Koller doesn’t play that way all the time, but he really does a lot of insane chops on songs like Black Cloud or Aimless Arrow, with little to no double kick. Plus I really think Ben’s playing inspires a lot of metallic hardcore drumming today. Nick Yacyshyn is probably the best new drummer. So creative. Tyler Colburn does awesome shit to make up for not having a double pedal. I met James Beveredge when I saw Portrayal of Guilt and made a point to tell him how much I admired his playing. Jon Theodore his a king of blending technical ability with taste but I think I might prefer the masturbatory nature of Pridgen. Theodore was obviously on better albums though.

I used to watch Orlando Drummer a lot too, for his chop vids, but he doesn't post much anymore and his last couple were kinda underwhelming. Also, his hair is dumb.

I just mean that some of the instrumentals he'll play on sound a bit Nashville to me haha. Same with Stephen Taylor sometimes. But another drum channel you might like is rdavidr, if you don't already know it. He doesn't cover any advanced playing concepts, he's just a good solid player. But his main draw for me is DIY building and refurbishing that he'll do for equipment. He has vids where he sound proofs his own studio, or refinishes drums and changes heads, mods/builds cymbals, etc. Really fun stuff.

Since you like The Police: Vinnie also was the drummer on Ten Summoner's Tales and some other Sting records
