Gyromania
05.10.20 | Also plan on going through Castlevania Bloodlines soon, and maybe the Gameboy games, which I've heard are pretty good. If you guys have played any of these, let me know what you think. Also I'm 100% down for recommendations like these, if you have any
I added artwork for the first 4 Castlevania soundtracks but Sputnik blows ass so none of them seemed to work. Oh well. |
Shadowmire
05.10.20 | play aria of sorrow if you haven't and rabi ribi if you don't mind weeb shit
also momodora |
Gyromania
05.10.20 | Aria of Sorrow was so damn good but I never did beat it, will check those other recs |
Shadowmire
05.10.20 | as for the stuff on the list, I'm a huge fan of Bloodstained and Hollow Knight (and obviously SotN), but I'm a bit lukewarm on Ori. haven't played Blasphemous, Shovel Knight or Cuphead but I might get around to it |
Gyromania
05.10.20 | I get being Lukewarm on Ori but I love the way it controls. The world isn't quite as engrossing as other metroidvanias but I do love the art style. Cool to see another Bloodstained fan. You play both games? |
Titan
05.10.20 | 6 is indeed perfect, 1 is a stone cold classic, but so is 2 Gyro. That game was huge when it came out. It definitely took time to figure out and was the first game that I can remember that had a play manual. Some of the tricks you'd never be able to figure out on your own, agreed on that account.
But when the castle inverted.... |
Eons
05.10.20 | Great game so much old school charm and the music certainly helped with that.
Did you know that the guy on the cover of the Gorguts album was an actor the band hired after initially trying to use this Indian guy that Luc Lemay ran into but the first guy turned out to be some weird drug addict and Lemay went to his house one time and said he felt strange in the house and left. Lmao. |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | Lmao
Titan: Idk, 2 has things that I do like but overall I think it's tedious. I don't mind guides to refer to for values, strats, secrets etc., but when it's mandatory that I use one to progress in the game due to some cryptic bullshit, I have an issue with it. |
Dunpeal
05.11.20 | You need to play Blasphemous. The game and OST are awesome! |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | Yeah Blasphemous is on this list, been playing and really enjoying it. Rating subject to change, it's just how I'm feeling atm |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.11.20 | Love shovel knight. A lot of the other indies here are on my list to play. I have blasphemous and I started it but got frustrated and havent gone back. Have you played Dead Cells? Kind of metroidvania kind of roguelike all around very good. Axiom Verge was pretty good too |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | Just beat Axiom Verge a few months ago. Great throwback to original Metroid. Also love Dead Cells, put about 30 hours into it but haven't gotten around to that most recent patch that adds a new early area, new enemies, and a new boss |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | Another one I should have added to this list is The Messenger. Incredible game |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.11.20 | The messenger is super
Just ok
Wont finish it |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | I mean... How far are you? There's a huge twist that happens towards the middle of the game that changes everything |
bloc
05.11.20 | Metroidvania games are the best |
Ocean of Noise
05.11.20 | I've only played Super Castlevania IV and a bit of SOTN. In terms of other Metroidvanias I've played Ori and the Blind Forest. All excellent games. |
WatchItExplode
05.11.20 | Simon's quest is the best one how dare you. Just because you had to call the nintendo hotline to figure out the warps. |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | I have to admit, I do own a shirt with the caption "What a horrible night to have a curse" lol. There are certain iconic things in it but fk me that game is awful.
Has anyone seen the Caatlevania show? I watched the first season and thought it was pretty good, was wondering if it got better |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.11.20 | @gyro I am past the twist. |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | Of it turning into a metroidvania? I thought that was awesome. Dope soundtrack and great gameplay, and the shift from 8 to 16 bit is so cool. What's not to love? |
el_newg
05.11.20 | Castlevania has the best NES music imo, those tunes go hard and get me dancing lol
check out Owlboy and the Shantae games, they are good platformers :D |
R4zor3dge
05.11.20 | "Has anyone seen the Castlevania show?"
I've seen the first season and only the first episode of the second. My friend told me it gets good later tho. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.11.20 | @gyro the 8 bit to 16 bit gimmick is cool and switching to a metroidvania is a cool idea but the humour and dialogue straddles a line between mundaneity masquerading as mildly profound and just flat out cringe. The platforming itself is good but the boss fights are not very fun. I just lost interest. |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | el_newg: Yes! I forgot to look into Owlboy. The sprites look so lively in that, and the world looks gorgeous. Might make that my next game.
Pots: that's fair. I do agree the dialogue is contrived, but I don't play it for the story tbh. |
osmark86
05.11.20 | Get on Celeste man! guess it kinda doesn't technically count as a metroidvania, but who gives it's plain awesome. |
osmark86
05.11.20 | also, I'm planning on starting Hollow Night pretty soon. I have that game in my library and I'm just biding my time until I get cracking on it. It looks absolutely fantastic imo. |
Gallantin
05.11.20 | I was on a platformer kick in 2018 but they haven't been appealing to me recently. I've had Ori since like...2015? I think, it came free with my Xbox. Never played it. One day i will, when I get back into the platformers. I still need to play Blasphemous, Time Spinner, and I need to finally play through the Metroid 2 remake. |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | Snox: I love Metroid 2, but the remake doesn't seem super appealing to me. 2.5d can be very off-putting, kind of wish they went a different dirrction. Blasphemous is great, I think you'll dig it. I'll check Time Spinner, never heard of it before now. Did you ever beat Ritual of the Night? Going through it again for a ng+ atm. Looking forward to the randonizer and boss revenge mode they have coming.
osmark86: Nah Celeste could feature here, it's a platformer. Only reason it isn't here is because I played it to death last year. Game is a hard 10/10 for me. But god damn was the farewell dlc ever rage inducing lol |
osmark86
05.11.20 | I have Blasphemous on my wishlist, game looks deliciously gruesome. Axiom Verge also looks really cool and it's getting a sequel pretty soon.
hahaha yeah I loved it but tbh didn't really have it in me to attack the dlc for it. it was enough of a struggle just to get through the original game. will probably go back to it someday and play the b-sides too. |
Gallantin
05.11.20 | Axiom Verge is fantastic, couldn't recommend it enough. Does a lot of cool things with exploration and abilities that are unique to its sci-fi premise that was just refreshing to see considering how many Metroid-style games just go for the same types of abilities.
I hear Time Spinner is a great Metroid-style game so I've been keen to check it for a while.
I played a few hours of Ritual of the Night and was enjoying it but another game came out and I started playing that instead and just never ended up going back. I'll beat it eventually, once my platforming kick comes back. Right now I'm on a JRPG kick, which could last months... |
Gallantin
05.11.20 | Blasphemous has cool art but ultimately looks like that "ooh look how grim we can be" style of "dark" fantasy. Like someone saw Dark Souls or Bloodborne and was like "hey i can be ~dark~ too" without understanding the real soul and balance behind good dark and horror fantasy things.
That said the gameplay looks good so yeah, I bought it on release, I just haven't played it yet. |
Shadowmire
05.11.20 | axiom verge is pretty good, and environmental station alpha |
Gallantin
05.11.20 | Wish Environmental Station Alpha was on Switch |
DungeonBoy
05.11.20 | Blasphemous is great, excellent platforming, enemy design, powerups etc. When you die it's your fault = good game. I like the gothic vibe, and the music is excellent. Definitely in the top 10 for me in 2019. Just beat Hyper Light Drifter over the weekend and it's up there with the best i've played. Hollow Knight is 10/10 for me, best indie game I've ever played. The Messenger should have made the list, that game was like an 8/10.
Regarding Castlevania though, Bloodstained Curse of the Moon was really excellent. Loved how the different characters were all useful in their own way, but I liked bat guy the best. |
ConcubinaryCode
05.11.20 | Check deaths gambit and salt and sanctuary |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | DingeonBoy: Messenger is like an 8.5 for me but this isn't a list of every platformer/metroidvania I've ever playes, otherwise Celeste and others would be here too and the list would have 100 entries. I was thinking of adding it tho since I did just beat it a few months ago. List is things I've been playing lately. And yeah Curse of the Moon is so fucking good. Beat it like 5 times now
Snox: Yeah Axiom Verge is rad. You pumped for the sequel? I think that comes out soon. Just downloaded Time Spinner. Saw a vid on it and it looks damn good. I love that hand drawn pixel art style. As for Blasphemous, I kind of got that edgy vibe too but it does a good job of building its world and the combat and platforming are super solid so far |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | ConcubinaryCode: ngl I did not think much of Salt & Sanctuary. I beat the game but man was it tedious as hell a lot of the time. It seems to cater more to the "git gud" crowd of Dark Souls fandom that ultimately led to games like Dark Souls 2 being filled with tons of artificial difficulty bs. Maybe I'm being too harsh on it, it's been like 2 years since I beat it but my playthrough was full of frustration. Will check Death's Gambit tho, I've heard good things |
DungeonBoy
05.11.20 | been waiting for Time Spinners to go on sale myself, same with that Mummy metroidvania that's apparently amazing. Biggest disappointments ever for me were Owlboy and Iconoclasts. I was very let down by both of those games and totally stopped playing them which is pretty rare for me as I'm normally a completionist even if games are just okay.
Been also waiting for Death's Gambit to go on sale, and agreed Salt and Sanct was pretty okay. Definitely a little indie and rough around the edges, but has some redeeming qualities. Pretty good atmosphere, and okay gameplay. I remember a lot of backtracking, but it's been a couple years. |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | What? For real? Lol dude I just downloaded Owlboy. That really sucks to hear, its pixel art looks incredible, been looking forward to playing. Also funny you mentioned The Mummy Demastered, I was just about to mention that one. Seen a decent bit on it and it looks very solid, might dl soon.
S&S did indeed have good atmosphere and decent level design, but it had a lot of cheap one shot bs in it and some of the bosses were just poorly designed - like that one pirate boss that shoots the player. Fuck that boss. I thought I was just shit at the game but the way to get past him is juat grind grind grind until you can level up some more, which is bad design imo. I like that in Souls (which this game clearly riffs on) you can surpass any boss by skill alone, regardless of level. |
Gallantin
05.11.20 | I am super hype for the Axiom Verge sequel, I hope it gets a physical release, I have a limited edition box of the first game and I'd like a similar one for the second.
I bought Death's Gambit the day it was released, played a few hours of it. I loved the artstyle, and the exploration and combat was fun. The story and writing sucked bad tho. It was buggy on release tho I so stopped playing and decided to wait for, hopefully, an eventual Switch release. I just don't like playing indie games anywhere else now. I know a bunch are on PS4 as well but I have a system where I dedicate different consoles/platforms to different types of games so then I feel like I'm not underutilising them. So I have my Switch for Nintendo exclusives and indies, my PS4 for most AAA games and PS exclusives, my Xbox for...like...nothing except my old 360 games (my XBONE purchase is my biggest regret), and my PC for CRPGs, strategy games, etc. (basically anything that's better with M&K). |
Gallantin
05.11.20 | I bought Salt and Sanctuary a while back, but haven't played it yet. I don't like the style at all. The play character looks so dumb. The art style in general looks lame. But I'll play it one day.
Game that disappointed me the most was Sundered. Everything about that game looks amazing, but it is sooo let down by its randomly generated bullshit. |
DungeonBoy
05.11.20 | ugh yeah, I've been putting off Sundered for a while because of that. I hope sometime soon we can get over the whole randomly generated bs for metroidvanias. The art style is really cool, I loved their work with Jotun, which gameplay wise was pretty lacking, but absolutely beautiful art and sound design. lol I agree the character in Salt and Sanctuary looks so dumb, I kinda hated that style they chose. It made it feel very amateur.
@Gyro, you might like Owlboy dude, it's absolutely beautiful. One of the best looking indie games ever for that style IMO, I was just very turned off by the gameplay |
Gallantin
05.11.20 | I played the first dungeon in Owlboy and liked it. Can't remember why I didn't keep playing it. But i thought it was fun, and the game looks absolutely gorgeous. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.11.20 | "but I don't play it for the story tbh"
It's still a piece of the whole tho. It might not be the most important component but every little piece effects the overall experience of a game |
Gallantin
05.11.20 | Potsy ain't wrong
Sometimes a bad story can seriously hinder your experience of a game
I didn't care for Messenger's story, but it didn't bother me either
But I can understand it was shoehorned in enough to bother someone else |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.11.20 | The writing just came off really amateur, dialogue especially, like something in a free online game |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.11.20 | And by free online game I mean like a game youd find when you were a kid on a site called something like "myfreegames.com" |
Gallantin
05.11.20 | I just liked it for the platforming, I really dug the level design |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.11.20 | Level design was good for sure, it's not without its strengths |
el_newg
05.11.20 | maybe im just some twee idiot but my fav dialogue is in like Donut County and A Short Hike its like cute wholesome silly stuff |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.11.20 | I can fucks with that when it's done well too, I really liked the dialogue in celeste, they really struck a great balance between cute/funny and touching/insightful |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | Yeah same Snox, I loved the level design. Some rly tight platforming. The dlc was really great too. When it comes to metroidvanias and platformers in general story isn't as important to me as it would be in other genres, but ofc a solid story will elevate my love for it even higher. Lile Hollow Knight: the lore and world building goes nearly as deep as Dark Souls which makes it my favourite metroidvania. |
Gyromania
05.11.20 | Yeah Celeste had pretty great writing and some really good platforming. The C side for world 6 took me like 4 hours to beat. One of the hardest platforming sections I've ever played. Would say it's even harder than Path of Pain from Hollow Knight.
el_newg: is Donut County the game where you're a hole in the ground and you keep getting bigger and bigger by swallowing people/buildings? Because that game looked awesome but I forgot it even existed until juat now. |
Gallantin
05.12.20 | Donut County seems fun but I'm not big on games that are only like 2 hours long that you'll never play again. They can be really good but then they just hang around forever. This is where renting digital games should be a bigger thing on all platforms. Like the Xbox Games Pass is good for that kinda stuff. I bought Firewatch last year and beat it in an evening and it was a great little story but like??? Never gonna play it ever again. Now it just sits on my PS4 and like I paid for it so it just feels dumb |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | While we are discussing platformers I got sonic mania and I absolutely fucking hate it
I think I might just hate the old sonic games and am just finally coming to terms with it. They are not fun and controlling sonic is aids |
Keyblade
05.12.20 | going super fast with lots of bright colours seemed super cool as a kid. i tried getting back into sonic recently and I just couldn't. Marble Zone was such a pain in the ass, it's just like why |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | Honestly you never go fast enough before you run into some dumb shit or fall off a fucking cliff into a 500 foot abyss of water. Everything just feels off. Sonic controls so poorly and the controls are so counter intuitive it's like did you literally only have one button back in the day? I know for a fact you didnt |
Keyblade
05.12.20 | yea shits not even fluid. u go fast for like 2 seconds then oh nice some spikes that completely halt ur momentum. maybe I'm just shit at it. but growing up on mario who controlled like a dream, sonic just feels clunky in comparison |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | totally! that being said, they really did a great job of translating him to super smash in hindsight. i mean he's absolutely no fun whatsoever to play as and his move set is completely jacked the fuck up so its pretty much spot on. |
Gallantin
05.12.20 | I think the appeal is that you're meant to learn the intricate levels so well that you eventually can go super fast through them
But I always hated Sonic
Never felt right |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | i fucking hate the levels lmao
honestly i think the only reason i've always gone back and tested the waters with those games is that i really loved sonic 2 adventure battle as a kid and it made me want to like the rest of the franchise. unfortunately i have found there to be exactly no other good sonic games. |
Gmork89
05.12.20 | Agreed about Hollow Knight, one of the best games/atmospheres I have ever played. I need to finish it out I have put so many hours into it. |
Gallantin
05.12.20 | Yeah I hate the levels too, I never liked how wide and tall and complex they are. I just wanna run fast. I mean I'm SONIC. Sick of bumping into walls and shit. I don't have the patience to learn the levels, I wanna go fast from the first step. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | yeah that shit should be infinitely more linear and pander to literally the one mechanic sonic is supposed to be characterized by instead of actively working against it but hey thats just me |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | tempted to crown sonic the most overrated og franchise tbqh |
Keyblade
05.12.20 | gotta agree
and to think how much time I wasted as a kid fiending for some fast sonic action trying to download the OG games on like kazaa and limewire only for them to end up being demos every time |
Gallantin
05.12.20 | I wouldn't disagree |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | LOL fucking limewire, triggered |
rellik009
05.12.20 | "unfortunately i have found there to be exactly no other good sonic games."
bro you sound like these IGN guys lmao. I'm going to seem like I'm jumping on the bandwagon but yes classic Sonic is completely overrated and boring as shit |
Keyblade
05.12.20 | cant lie the 3D ones look fun as shit, like Sonic Colors for example |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | I dont know anything about ign so that reference is completely over my head other than that it sounds like its maybe supposed to be an insult |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | "cant lie the 3D ones look fun as shit, like Sonic Colors for example"
i've wanted more of the 3D ones to be good since i liked S2AB but every one I've played has been really bad, particularly Sonic Unleashed which I'd be tempted to call one of the worst games I've ever (extremely briefly) played in my entire life |
Keyblade
05.12.20 | there are so many of them damn, like I've never even heard of Unleashed lmao
i probably only say that because they tend to have better set pieces where you can link a bunch of fast sections and it actually feels like what sonic seems like he was supposed to be about |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | Yeah, thats what I loved about s2ab you literally fucking fly through the levels. you dont do much other than push forward on the control stick and jump sometimes lol but its a fucking blast compared to that janky ass old school shit |
Gyromania
05.12.20 | 3D sonic is fucking ass outside of Adventure 2. So many weak ass opiniond about OG Sonic though. Sonic Mania is the absolute best way to experience Sonic. The level design is the best it's ever been and the game has high replay value as a result of branching pathways and the dlc characters which are really fun to play.
And pots I think you're misremembering just how much downtime there is in Sonic Adventure 2. Mania has infinitely more forward momentum than SA2. Do you not remember the missions as tails in the mech suit? Or the tedious as fuck emerald quests for Knuckles and Rogue? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | "So many weak ass opiniond"
k
"Sonic Mania is the absolute best way to experience Sonic."
its fucking shit
"Mania has infinitely more forward momentum than SA2"
no |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | sonic mania was actually a rec from you gyro you owe me 4 dollars for that piece of fucking shit i wont forget this |
Gyromania
05.12.20 | Pft git gud son. I can make Sonic look like Usain Bolt in that game
Since you're clearly racist against hedgehogs, I recommend instead that you play any of the games on this list that you haven't played. Although I'd stay away from the Castlevania entries lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | i like castlevania tho |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | gimme my four dollars |
Gallantin
05.12.20 | Sonic Mania is the best way to experience Sonic, I have no doubts
But that's just a testament to how bad Sonic has always been |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | LOL |
Gyromania
05.12.20 | I agree with that other dude, you guys could be ign reviewers! ;D
Which Castlevania games have you played? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | Um IV, Aria of Sorrow, and i think one other gameboy one i dont remember which tho |
Gyromania
05.12.20 | Aria of Sorrow is sick. You should definitely seek out Symphony |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | yeah i loved aria
i dont think i have the means to play symphony tho |
Gyromania
05.12.20 | Do you own a pc? It's easy to emulate. Otherwise ps1, ps4, xbox one can run it |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.12.20 | nah just a macbook and the only console i have rn is a switch |
Gyromania
05.13.20 | Macbook damn, feelsbadman. Switch is awesome tho - you should get the Bloodstained games |
evilford
05.13.20 | Theres a game called shovel knight? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.13.20 | It doesnt really feel bad. I've never been into gaming on comps and mac is better for the things I do use such as my music hardware and software and design stuff.
@ford yes and it is amazing |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.13.20 | Also bloodstained ritual is on my list, just been waiting for it to go on sale for a decent price |
Gallantin
05.13.20 | Mac can still play a good range of old titles if you use GOG, which also frequently has amazing sales
Last week I bought every Legacy of Kain game, Daikatana, and Omikron for like $9AUD |
Gallantin
05.13.20 | I hear Bloodstained is a poor performer on Switch so maybe google it to see if the problems have been patched before buying |
rellik009
05.13.20 | "I dont know anything about ign so that reference is completely over my head other than that it sounds like its maybe supposed to be an insult"
basically during a live podcast thing, they kept saying over and over that there were no good Sonic games. Now you know. Didn't mean it as an insult though, they're pretty correct in a sense. |
osmark86
05.13.20 | speaking of old games Sonic 2 is one of my all-time favourites. I played it countless hours as a kid on the megadrive and have played it on emulators multiple times since. I love everything about that game.
has anyone played Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee? that is another platformer that I absolutely loved. |
Gallantin
05.13.20 | Yeah Oddworld rocks |
rellik009
05.13.20 | for some reason I thought you were talking about Worms |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.13.20 | I've always heard good things about odd world looks weird af tho lol |
Gallantin
05.13.20 | It's a simple satirical takedown of corporatism/capitalism, but it's just really damn good. Compelling platforming puzzles, strong art design and direction, and just a plainly told story that is surprisingly poignant despite aforementioned simplicity.
I recommend playing the original, it's on GOG. It's usually very cheap. It's a classic. Don't get the remake. |
osmark86
05.13.20 | yeah I recommend it to anyone who likes platformers really. superb game. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.13.20 | is rayman legends actually good cuz the rayman games have always looked stupid as fuck to me |
osmark86
05.13.20 | yeah been thinking the same, but legends does look highly entertaining. can anyone recommend? |
Gallantin
05.13.20 | Rayman Legends is great, another great platformer. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.13.20 | what is great about it |
Gallantin
05.13.20 | It's just a solidly designed platformer. The music and levels are dynamically designed and it explores new ideas thoroughly as it goes along to keep things fresh. I can only compare it to Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze in the sense that it's just...a really solid platformer that gets the important stuff right. |
Gallantin
05.13.20 | Game Maker's Toolkit did a cool video on it a couple of years ago, it's the video the got me to buy the game myself. It does a better job of explaining the interesting stuff than I can. |
Gallantin
05.13.20 | Plus the game is so cheap these days. I got a physical copy of it two years ago for like $20 |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.13.20 | really the only thing that keeps me away from it is how god awful the designs are for literally every character and monster, it's embarrassing |
Keyblade
05.13.20 | rayman legends is great, but Origins (the first game) is even better. no hyperbole, that's my favorite modern 2D platformer, it's perfect...especially in co-op. Legends is missing something for me, but those music levels will never stop being fun |
Keyblade
05.13.20 | also there's a "definitive edition" of Legends on the Switch that regularly goes on sale for like 15 bucks |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.13.20 | yeah thats why i ask, it literally goes on sale up to like 90% almost monthly lmao |
Keyblade
05.13.20 | yea the Switch just ported over a bunch of the best Wii U titles and I bet a lot of ppl just forgot about them or already had them, and they just want to sell now lol. don't really see what's so definitive about this version either |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.13.20 | yeah i pretty much exhausted the wii u library |
Gallantin
05.13.20 | Sometimes I take a chance on games that I hate character and enemy designs for and end up loving them.
I hated Hollow Knight's style before playing it, then came to love it once I played it. I hated Ni No Kuni's character and enemy design before playing it, but the charm seeps in once you do. And this has happened for like...countless games at this point. Sometimes playing a game will make its shitty design somehow just work better for you. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
05.13.20 | on that note honestly when you told me to get enter the gungeon and i watched the trailer i hated the art direction but that game is amazing so yeah.
also glad you mentioned Ni No Kuni cuz i really wanted it but then once i started reading reviews it made me second guess myself. some of the problems people had with it sound like it makes it a bit tedious. |

05.13.20 | cant lie I bought Mario Kart 8 again on the switch cuz it actually improved the game significantly
but yeah you can probably play Origins and Legends on your Wii U for a combined like 30 bucks which is crazy considering they're some of the best platformers of the last 2 generations. I got Origins for like 10 bucks on ebay lol |

05.13.20 | what is so different for the switch port of mario kart 8? |
Keyblade
05.13.20 | whole new battle mode (with like 5 different styles) that's actually good compared to the worthless one on the original. also the ability to carry 2 items which was in every single mario kart except for 8 lol and I guess an updated online experience |

05.13.20 | oh cool. i honestly loved 8 so maybe i'll pick that up some time |

05.13.20 | Enter the Gungeon is another one for me, I thought it looked stupid as fuck before I played it. I gotta say this is like my experience with maybe 80% of indie games I play. Very few indie games draw me in with their art style.
As for Ni No Kuni, I understand the tedium complaints but like...if you just want to play a warm, charming Studio Ghibli film of a JRPG, I cannot say you'll feel your time is wasted. It's just like a warm hug of a game. And honestly it discourages grinding pretty hard by severely capping how much exp. you get from certain enemies (not to mention they start running away from you), thus letting you know pretty firmly you're safe to move on to new challenges or whatever. |

05.13.20 | I still haven't bought Mario Kart 8. Never played a Mario Kart since 64 but I'm still interested in it. |

05.13.20 | speaking of studio ghibli film of a jrpg Baldo looks sick |

05.13.20 | Man Ni No Kuni is a fucking great game. I even got the collector's edition book to go with it. Playing with that book at my side was an awesome experience and it's one of the coolest collector items I've ever owned. Also a big yes to Rayman Legends. Such a well designed addicting platformer |

05.15.20 | I just remembered this time when Hayao was invited by the Resident Evil team to watch their meeting, and Hayao ended up dissing them saying it was disappointing and disgraceful that they put so much effort in a horror game lol |
