| Songs I've enjoyed lately
Some songs I've been listening to and thinking about lately | 1 | | Squid Houseplants
'Houseplants' - I was really into Parquet Courts' Wide Awake for a little while and this satisfies that same urge for manic, creative energy. "Career-driven, guided by oxygen". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7y2fbY23Dg | 2 | | Pottery No. 1
'Lady Solinas' - I don't know anything about this band but I love the lilting riffs in this, fun song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNiF1l_zBb4 | 3 | | (Sandy) Alex G House Of Sugar
'Gretel' - Maybe my favourite album of the year? Not that I have heard very much from 2019 yet! Still catching up on the past few years. But still, (Sandy) Alex G never clicked with me before but the first time I heard Gretel (not knowing who it was by) I knew immediately I needed more of it. Southern Sky is another highlight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcO-NPtj5BI | 4 | | Foxes in Fiction Trillium Killer
'Antibody' - About 10 years ago I found this guys blogspot (remember those?) scavenging for links of an album I was trying to find. I ended up getting his first tape 'Swung From The Branches', which was a very pleasant surprise, and haven't really thought about him since until I stumbled upon this absolutely gorgeous single. A beautiful dream of a song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhMeRz2n7Ic | 5 | | Oso Oso Basking in the glow
'The View' - This song is like a Saves The Day reunion tour. The chorus is sublime. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLUQNlKQkMU | 6 | | Bill Callahan Woke On A Whaleheart
'Sycamore' - Bill is a treasure and Sycamore is a delicate, meandering song that sounds like it's disappearing into the natural landscape it creates. When that short electric guitar break comes in about 3 and a half minutes in, it is unassailable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PkqAWrH7Pc | 7 | | ITEM Sad Light
'Horse Pill' - Where did this band come from? Great album, and a song that is gritty and entwining in perfect ways. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kxcf7S2hovA | 8 | | Amen Dunes Freedom
'Miki Dora' - Like a swamp bubbling up. A diabolical grooviness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RONXqXaF8oI | 9 | | Big Thief Two Hands
'Not' - The way Adrianne Lenker sings the word 'Hunger' is like finding a new religion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIcVwH47uxQ | 10 | | Wooden Shjips Back To Land
'These Shadows' - Glorious, fuzzy, driving along an easily-underestimated melody without any real sense of impetus until a guitar solo blazes through, the bomb. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ng_dBhjt0s | 11 | | Caribou Our Love
'Can't Do Without You' - I listen to Caribou a lot and this album a lot. But this song the most. It's a classic. A song I could live inside of. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI2Et19vDCM | 12 | | John Maus We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves
'Hey Moon' - John Maus is a total noob but this is an unbelievably sweet and peaceful tune that I've been listening to a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Av5Jb52yFBo | 13 | | Descendents Milo Goes to College
'Catalina' - Hell yeah, my tank's full of squid and it's getting light | 14 | | Jai Paul Do You Love Her Now / He
'He' - Jai Paul is unreal and I'm so glad he came out of that long hiatus for this. Listening to demos of jasmine over and over again may have started to lose effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5DSbyl7WYs | 15 | | Bonny Doon Longwave
'Long Wave' - Yeah, this stuff still gets me, thoroughly 90's-indebted, guitar-based indie rock that is better the less of a fuss it makes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=titPBycsjL8 | 16 | | U.S. Girls In A Poem Unlimited
'Rosebud' - enlightenment-disco, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cFnewlPpzI | 17 | | Mental As Anything Best Of
'The Nips Are Getting Bigger' - I heard this on 'Mr. Inbetween' (great show) and cannot get this stupid song out of my head. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVnLJQIJw2Y | 18 | | Sports Team Winter Nets
'Margate' - A brief thrill of blustering rock n roll. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nscodr_hufY | 19 | | Kurt Vile Bottle It In
'One Trick Ponies' - might as well be titled 'Hug Your Friends', Kurt Vile is an artist that has stayed with me a bit unexpectedly while older favourites tapered off. A great musician and a seemingly great guy in general, the personality that comes through his music is warm and decent and admirable in a lot of ways. The fact that he continues to make music that sounds like it couldn't belong to anyone but himself is fantastic and I have a lot of respect for that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7OmWKy6_8E | |
