Top 10 Opeth Songs

So, come September, Akerfeldt and his band of merry men will drop what will hopefully be an album that signals a return to form. Here are my personal fave songs by them, with descriptions.
Cusp of Eternity

Undoubtedly this choice will ruffle a few feathers but I have to say it is just so fucking catchy.
9In the Mist She Was Standing

What an intro. The harmonizing guitars seem to go on forever but there is just so much going on in this song that it is almost overwhelming to a certain degree. The more black metal-esque shrieks and screams are cool too - primitive Opeth but nonetheless incredibly enjoyable.
8The Moor

Curiously enough, the most notable thing about The Moor is the unexplainable 'ghostly' sigh right after the middle section - I remember reading an interview with Mikael where he talks about how that noise was certainly not emitted by any band member/instrument - but all in all, just like The Leper Affinity is the perfect opener for BP, this is perfect for Still Life.

The combination of Steven Wilson and Akerfeldt makes Bleak outstanding. Brilliant riffs too.
6Serenity Painted Death

One of their heaviest songs and definitely the best guitar solo out of pretty much everything they've done.
5To Bid You Farewell

The ballad of Morningrise is a gorgeous one. The way the guitars intertwine with those sweet as fuck melodies is awesome and vocally speaking it is definitely impassioned and heartfelt.
4Harlequin Forest

So many brilliant moments here. The middle section is magical, ethereal and superbly written.

Damnation is a sombre affair, yet beautiful and fragile at the same time and Windowpane is easily the best track on it. The arrangements and structures are flawless and overall, it is just an exquisite listen.
2The Leper Affinity

Right from the menacing discord that introduces Blackwater Park until the gentle piano motifs that close the track, every time I listen to The Leper Affinity I'm always fully engaged. The riff right before the acoustic section has to be one of their best ever and lyrically the song is very strong. Aside from that, once again, just like Deliverance, the song doesn't drag or have any boring/uninspired moments. Perfect opener to a perfect album.

Although the album itself isn't one of their best, the title track takes the crown as my all time fave track by them. The transitions from heavy to clean are superb and the clean section itself features sublime instrumentation, particularly the drums. Every riff is perfect and Mikael's vocals, both the soft, lullaby-esque
singing and the demonic roars are great.
