The grand Mayhem ranking
Focused on the LPs and EPs, with some exceptions. Albums in reverse order, with additional commentaries, including my personal favourite songs on the top10.
Ordo ad Chao
Pure Fucking Armageddon
Dawn of the Black Hearts
Bootleg or not, sickest album cover ever made.
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Legendary, but far from my personal tops. It is a mixed album to me, because I love the first half of the album lot more than the rest.
Favourite song: Pagan Fears
Everything is given, but I can't love it that much like how I want :[ This is also one of the most progressive album from the band's discography, but in my opinion, this is not their "deepest cut".
Favourite song: Psywar
I prefer this over the LP, becasue the mix. It is more sinister and atmospheric.
Favourite song: From Beyond Event Horizon
Exciting, energic, progressive... just slightly behind GDoW. Excellent, I should listen to this much more.
Favourite song: My Death
Out from the Dark
Another exception, but it deserved to be here because this is the best compilation of Dead's performance in the band. May he rest in peace.
Favourite song: Freezing Moon
Wolf's Lair Abyss
Crushing. Also one of my most favourite EPs ever. Bunch of superb, progressive and original songs. "I Am Thy Labyrinth"
Favourite song: I Am Thy Labyrinth + Necrolust (from 1997, bonus track on the new reissue)
This is an exception, because this is a compilation; but: in my opinion, everyone should listen this right after/before GDoW, because those early-stage songs are tasty.
Favourite song: Freezing Moon (live)
Grand Declaration of War
II. The original version. Just slightly behind the remastered version, but "A Bloodsword And A Colder Sun (Part 2.)" is way better in this one - which is a huge favourite of mine.
Favourite song: A Bloodsword And A Colder Sun (Part 2.)
Grand Declaration of War
The Maniac-Blasphemer era is my favourite, exciting, fresh, no week without listening something from those albums. Best spoken lines in metal.
I. The remastered version. Personally, I prefer this because this is much more organic, the bass is lot more audible - better, more energic, and I *love* the songwriting, and the vocals.
Favourite song: Completion In Science Of Agony (Part 1.)
The untouchable, the greatest EP ever made. Legendary. Pretty much the collection of my most favourite Mayhem songs served raw.
Favourite song: Chainsaw Gutsfuck
Very personal ranking.
Bruh....ily but De Mysteriis being at 10 is blasphemous.
(thanks Hawks!) That would be 7. if I would focus strictly on the LPs & EPs - but I can't help it, I have a weird taste, I guess.
All you need is 1 and 10 lol
9 is my favorite metal album of all time tho
what are your thoughts on 15? I figured most people who dig the Blasphemer era would like it, but I seem to be wrong.
15 always felt just some mishmash to me, I don't really feel the whole stuff at all. Don't get me wrong, Blasphemer did a fantastic job there, but I miss the overall "energy" from the whole album. Attila is great vocalist, but that album is his worst (I prefer his style much more in Sunn O))) to be honest). Additionally the production is shite, the bass is almost nonexistent... a blunt album.
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, Deathcrush, Live in Leipzig, Esoteric Warfare and Wolf's Lair Abyss are my faves.
This is an out-of-the-ordinary list, which is respectable m/
Thanks Thalassic! Strong picks!
