Sloth's Q1 2019 Classics!
25% of the year is done, and 3 months isn't very long to deem something as classic, hence the limited list.
However one album has grabbed me by the short and curlys, and demanded itself be in contention for such prestigious recognition.
|1||Epic Beard Men|
This Was Supposed To Be Fun
For those that don't know, Epic Beard Men are 2 indie rap icons, label mates, spoken word slammers, and beard growing men, i.e. Sage Francis and B.Dolan, and this could be their greatest work in years. It is like they have purpose again, and are having fun writing witty rhymes. The last couple of albums by Sage in particular, although great, felt mopey and samsey.
Lyrics are intelligent and hilarious. Beats are awesome, "You Can't Tell Me Shit" has an awesome 8bit sample over fun technology references. Slug from Atmosphere makes an appearance on the excellent "Pistol Dave". There are also cameos by Blue Raspberry (Wu Tang), Kathleen Stubelek (Circle traits the Square) and Eligh (Living Legends). This is fun, no supposedly about it.
Fav tracks, "Shin Splits", "You Can't Tell Me Shit", "Pistol Dave", "Hedges"
The best of the rest, Q1 2019 list to come.
Anyone else got a near classic 5 for the first quarter this year?
"You can't tell me shit" is so so so good.
Aight, will listen.
Damn right SgtShock. "You can't tell me shit".
I like how they speed up the cadence on "Shin Splints", adding to the urgency if missing their flight.
Do it Papa, even if it is just for the lyrics. Eg
"Your girl's got a man bun, son (you can't tell me shit)
I got an NPR tote bag (you can't tell me shit)
Your Twitter avatar is an egg (you can't tell me shit)
I don't even own a television (you can't tell me shit)
I got a black belt in pilates (you can't tell me shit)
My phone is on 2% battery (you can't tell me shit)
I'm not installing any more updates (you can't tell me shit)"
Yeah shin splints makes me chuckle every time. All the songs sit perfectly in the space between goofy, serious, and insightful.
Def great stuff I found leaving you a shoutbox. The flow of this entire thing is just breezy and fun. Plus, I'm always a sucker for songs that mess with the tempo.
