Sput's MAR 2019 Song of the Day

Hey everyone, it's Dylan hosting Sput's SOTD for the first time! Participants are requested, but not required, to submit recs that adhere to the following theme: songs that tell (a) stor(y/ies). Regulars and new contestants alike are welcome! Feel free to add your rating for each song under your column (or make a new column for yourself) at the spreadsheet for this month: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yo9Aj7t1IZwG41xFgX9kzIugIsVckENq5RnQace1WDw/edit#gid=1177641906
1Pedro the Lion

March 1st - Dylan620
"Black Canyon"
I'll start with my SOTY so far. "Black Canyon" tells the tale of a broken-hearted man who commits suicide by setting foot on a freeway and allowing an 18-wheeler to hit him at full force, and the first responders who interact with the man and try in vain to save him.

2Kazumi Watanabe
Lonesome Cat

March 2nd - Papa Universe
"Aqua Beauty" (guitar jazz)
Recently discovered this fella. This is some enthralling and beautiful stuff. (sorry, couldn't find the song as a standalone, so the link is for the full album)

3Livingston Taylor
Unsolicited Material

March 3rd - neekafat
"Railroad Bill"
one of the funniest goddamn songs ever from James Taylor's little brother, this one's a neek family favorite

4of Montreal
The Gay Parade

March 4th - ArsMoriendi
"Nickee Coco and the Invisible Tree" [baroque pop/psychedelic pop]
A little girl falls asleep in an invisible tree and the entire town goes searching for her

5Kate Bush

March 5th - JohnnyoftheWell
My rec is my favourite Kate Bush song (Nocturn, off Aerial), a beautiful beautiful account of night swimming in the ocean

6Wil Wagner

March 6th - SlothcoreSam
Make sure you have some tissues ready when you hear the story of "space's only dog. Friend to the stars, pet of the sun"

7Maximum the Hormone

March 7th - Metalrain
"ChuChu Lovely"
Japanese people be horny

The Visitors

March 8th - Trifolium
"The Visitors"
The “Visitors” reportedly represent the various state police in communist countries at the time of writing. Wikipedia: ''The official stated theme is a protest against the mistreatment of political dissidents in the Soviet Union at the time, as ABBA seemed to put political issues into their lyrics in the final days of the group. Ulvaeus has stated that at the time of release he preferred that the song should have a sense of mystery so did not explain the exact meaning.''

9The Hold Steady
Boys and Girls in America

March 9th - Minushuman24
"First Night"
This song serves as a recap of all of the characters in The Hold Steady's previous album. The bridge will forever send shivers down my spine.

10Men. In. Line. Formation

March 10th - sach
str8 wavy jone$ type shit. keeps it tru to the streets; earnest and unforgiving.

11Danny L Harle

March 11th - Asdfp277

March 12th - Papa Universe
"Ultimo Metro"
so turns out Brazillians also know how to bring it

13Shiina Ringo
Shouso Strip

March 13th - JohnnyoftheWell
"Izon-Shou / I Am An Addict"
From what I can gather from (appalling) translations, this is about infatuation and longing in a relationship, but honestly it's one of those larger-than-life closers that feels like an emotional journey regardless and needs to be heard at full blast.

14Harry Chapin
Short Stories

March 14th - Divaman
"Mr. Tanner"

15DJ Krush

March 15th - Trifolium
"Big City Lover"
Jazzy Hip-Hop from Japan

16Guniw Tools
Other Goose

March 16th - Metalrain
Just discovered this band recently and have been listening to them non stop. Catchy and fun visual kei with some fantatsic guitar work.

17The Mothers of Invention
Over-Nite Sensation

March 17th - ArsMoriendi
"Dinah-Moe Humm"
A story about a sex bet that features Tina Turner and the Ikettes. Not for the prude.

The Grand Spontanean

March 18th - SlothcoreSam
"Stillwave" (feat. Chris Farren)
This song is set in apocalyptic end times, due to someone discovering "the page at the end of the Internet", which you hear in earlier songs, and the writer trying to escape to the safe-haven of Disney Land. It starts off reflecting on humanity and observing their reactions to their final days, before reaching the gates of Disney. This is where Chris Farren steps in, to explain what is going on there.

The whole album is one big story, but this song alone is a stand out and well worth your time.
