02.11.19 | you say mischievous, so more rawdy and brash like Wipers, Wire, Gang of Four or more modern Iceage, Protomartyr, Parquet Courts or Ought?
or do you still want the Joy Division-isms like Lebanon Hanover (whom I hate), These New Puritans, latest Ought and The National?
or something completely wild like the no wave and noise punk scene with The Fall, The Au Pairs, Ja Ja Ja, DNA, L. Voag, Bodychoke and Lydia Lunch? |

02.11.19 | definitely not iceage or parquet courts, stuff like that is typically boring to me. i know the term “post punk” covers lots of ground, and i love like, the chameleons n random stuff like that like new order. i don’t care particularly for ian curtis so joy division has always missed me for the most part, but i do like the idea of liking something like them i guess. i do enjoy the national (far more years ago) but never have thought of them as post punk. i guess i have a lot to learn lol. the main thing i think of when asking for recs in this is that viet cong album but it seems there is a lot in here i need to check ASAP and i’m excited |

02.11.19 | okay, quick and vague trivia:
coldwave - synths, Joy Division-y and brooding, depressed/-ing (Trisomie 21, Asylum Party)
darkwave - some synths, darker than coldwave (and less sophisticated), kinda gothy, but not new wave (She Past Away, Dead Can Dance)
goth - eyeliner and sometimes almost grungy guitars, can use synths, pretty much its own genre now (and i pray to god, a dead one) (The Cure, Bauhaus)
minimal wave - darkwave electronica, but turned up to max, so it's usually just some bleep-bloops with muffled vocals (3 Teens Kill 4, Solid Space)
no wave - instrumental insanity, verging on free jazz and noise rock (U.S. Maple, James Chance and the Contortions)
revival - Interpol and the like (early Editors and early White Lies)
art-punk - sorta something between old-old-old-school punk (back when it was still part of the 'mod' culture) and brash guitar-tangly post-punk, a lot of bass, a little weird (Ja Ja Ja, Life Without Buildings)
new wave - pretty much its own genre, but a lot of the times very closely tied with post-punk, pop-y and easy on the ears (Dislocation Dance, I'm So Hollow)
industrial post-punk - can be a lot of things, but usually amounts to dark atmospheric electronica and some disturbing inter-genre influence (Pop. 1280, Odonis Odonis)
deathrock - krautrock+darkwave (Cadaver Em Transe, Christian Death)
other stuff - there's that UK snark (Half Man Half Biscuit, Sleaford Mods), some shoegaze-mixtures (Be Forest, 2:54), some electronic post-punk that isn't dark or cold (Total Control, ), dancepunk (Talking Heads, Franz Ferdinand), near damn jazz (Tuxedomoon, Dif Juz) |

02.11.19 | CORRECTION: put Microdisney instead of I'm So Hollow as the new wave example. they fit it better. I'm So Hollow is a little artsier and much wierder than a usual new wave band. |
