12.06.18 | Some incredible stuff here! |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | they're the top 100, honestly one of the most satisfying thingsI've ever done, the 90s are a goldmine |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | cheers butch, anything catch your eye? |
Casavir
12.06.18 | There was much better '90s metal but I'll probably check some of the stuff here I don't know. |
BeyondCosby
12.06.18 | Man, I have mad respect for you Doof. Some of the deep dive shit you find just blows my mind. Like, I don't even know how you are able to find half the shit you do. |
guitarded_chuck
12.06.18 | im real happy for your list doof but youve yet to acknowledge that it is in fact "meem" not "mem" |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | ok, obviously I couldn't include any metal I'd already listened to from the 90s in thislist, just the stuff over the last 4 months of searching.
Other metal I liked a lot that just missed out on top 100 billing:
- Mekong Delta, Dances of Death
- God Dethroned, Bloody Blasphemy
- Odium, The Sad Realm of the Stars
- Blut Aus Nord, Ultima Thulee
- Electric Wizard, Come My Fanatics
- Tiamat, Wild Honey
- Burzum, Det Som Engang Var
- Cornoner, Mental Vortex
- Death, The Sound of Perseverance
- Helmet, Strap it On (not really metal but sort of)
- Attomica, Disturbing the Noise
- Agalloch, Pale Folklore
- 3rd and the Mortal, Tear Laid in Earth
Dunno if any of those meet your approval more...or we share no overlap in metal most likely |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | I prefer meem |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | Cosby, you dig any of these? |
theBoneyKing
12.06.18 | oof, this is a big boy |
SandwichBubble
12.06.18 | List is pure and beautiful |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | you'll like a few of these Boney ;D
Sandwich - you spot any surprises in amongst this lot? |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | I think the 4/5 quality stuff would have just about stretched to another 50 or so entries...but another list seems excessive |
theBoneyKing
12.06.18 | I haven't forgotten about the ones here you've rec'ed me, will do...eventually, as is my wont |
theBoneyKing
12.06.18 | Also I'm a bit surprised you like 91 to that level, that one's much more Phero/Boney indie than it is Doof indie |
SandwichBubble
12.06.18 | Surprised to see swell, because I'm the one that added that album to the site. The only one that was here prior was Too Many Days Without Thinking.
Also 2 Dirty Three 5.0s daaaamn |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | Think I still have a couple of outstanding Boney recs to get to too.
Relieved to now be able to focus purely on 2018 releases for a week then end of year lists. |
theBoneyKing
12.06.18 | Too Many Days Without Thinking is the superior Swell album (between those two at least) |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | Yeah, the self titled Dirty Three I've only listened to twice so a bit of a premature 5.
The other one I picked up a CD copy and is mos definitely a 5. |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | I prefer '41' to 'Too Many Days' so far...but again I've listened to '41' a lot more |
SandwichBubble
12.06.18 | Seriously though, when did everyone start caring about swell
Swell-surgence if you will

12.06.18 | Doof send me the biggest outstanding recs on RYM so I can have them filed away for future consideration |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | 'Also I'm a bit surprised you like 91 to that level, that one's much more Phero/Boney indie than it is Doof indie'
I don't mind a bit of emo tinged stuff, I thought it was quite a subtle approach, loved the musical approach and I was actually fine with the vocals. That's one of the most recent discoveries on the list so need to revisit. |
BeyondCosby
12.06.18 | @Doof, I can honestly say I've never heard any of these albums. Once I finish my 2018 list I'll work my way through a couple of these. I've heard of ATCQ and MF Doom, just haven't hit those albums yet. |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | They're two of their best respective albums so def get on those Cos |
BeyondCosby
12.06.18 | Will do! I'm also intrigued by what "weird shit" means with the Coil album. |
DoofDoof
12.06.18 | If you've tried Coil before you'll know they defy categorisation really, that album you could roughly label electronic/psychedelic |
Relinquished
12.06.18 | dirty three and amon tobin hell yea |
TheMightyScoop
12.06.18 | best list on sput |
NeroCorleone80
12.06.18 | Cant believe how slept on the Grifters are |
bgillesp
12.06.18 | m/m/m/ Dirty Three and Morphine and The Necks rule plus other stuff |
butcherboy
12.07.18 | @Doof - too much goodness here to pick all of them out.. dirty three, 16 horsepower, gallon drunk, dog faced hermans, some great east coast hip hop.. |
butcherboy
12.07.18 | future sound of London always need more love.. teenage drug raves nostalgia.. they were huge in eastern Europe.. |
Hawks
12.07.18 | Fuck this list is awesome. |
Papa Universe
12.07.18 | I would have saluted your work, but my hands are too far away from my head and it'll take too much energy, so... |
DoofDoof
12.07.18 | Thanks peoples
Butch - if there’s one thing you need to know about Doof it’s that I’m East Coast every time |
DoofDoof
12.07.18 | Do people want a part 2? I definitely found enough great stuff for a second list |
luci
12.07.18 | very nice, love that global communication record |
DoofDoof
12.07.18 | luci, another 1994 album too
honestly the best year for most genres - so much good IDM, ambient, techno, etc
plus amazing for hip hop, alt rock/grunge, black metal... |
butcherboy
12.07.18 | Part 2, hand it over.. I’m checking some stuff offf this today.. |
DoofDoof
12.07.18 | Part 2 is up ;P |
rabidfish
12.07.18 | "weird country stuff with horns and Tom Waits style vocals"
sounds like my thang, will check |
TwigTW
12.07.18 | I'm already behind, just started list #1... the albums I know are great (Morphine and Kitchens of Distinction, especially), so I'll be checking out the rest over the weekend. |
DoofDoof
12.07.18 | Rabid - The lead singer/song writer Benjamin Smoke was an interesting character, they made an acclaimed documentary about his last few weeks alive before succumbing to AIDS, hard to track down though.
His music, esp the vocals/lyrics, take a while to grow on you - one of those where you have to like his personality to get into the band and that took me a while.
Some funny lines among his lyrics. |
DoofDoof
12.07.18 | Twig are you still listening to The Bathers? I picked up a copy of the Bloomsday side project album (in at 71on the list above) and went on discogs to secure copies of the '80s debut and Lagoon Blues. Still obsessed with them. |
TwigTW
12.07.18 | Yes! Still making my way through the Bathers Discog. I got stuck on Sunpowder (because of Cocteau Twins vocals), but every album is subtly great in its own way. Still can't believe they didn't find a larger audience in the 90s... I haven't gone near the side projects yet, will definitely check 71. |
DoofDoof
12.07.18 | It's a tricky blighter to track down, I blind purchased it
It isn't as good as The Bathers - it's more trad pop rock/blues rock. Still enjoying it so far though |
TwigTW
12.07.18 | I enjoy the hunt, so looking forward to that, as well as the music. |
TwigTW
12.09.18 | listening to Lustmord now and it sounds like one of those albums of whale songs--except all the whales are being hunted and killed--very disturbing. |
DoofDoof
12.09.18 | only tried two Lustmord so far but both sound equally evil, will probably work through the discog - that's a lot of bed wetting |
Deathconscious
12.09.18 | Nice list, bitch. |
DoofDoof
12.09.18 | Luv u |
rabidfish
12.09.18 | ok that was really good, actually |
TwigTW
12.12.18 | There are some nice electronics I didn't know on this list: Photek, Amon Tobin, and Lustmond. I like the more ambient The Place Where The Dark Stars Hang, but Heresy really grabbed me. |
DoofDoof
12.12.18 | Amon Tobin is an absolute essential Twig, will be spreading out into the rest of the discog - so far three very high 4.5 rating for the ones I've tried |
