mewithoutYou's [untitled] ranked (EP & LP)

My personal ranking (worst to best) of all the tracks, EP and LP, from mewithoutYou's [untitled]. Since it seems to be all the rage these days. These opinions will piss off a number of you, perhaps a lot of you. Oop.

Dirty Air

Maybe the only song I feel like skipping whenever it comes on. The chorus doesn't do anything for me at all and the verses kinda just come and go. Meh.

Bethlehem, WV

I do like this song, just with repeated listens it seems to do a little less for me each time. I find myself kind of floating away with this song, which is maybe the intention. But it just doesn't grab my attention so much anymore. I do really love the "did just as I was told" part with the oooh's and aaah's and shit though!

Flee, Thou Matadors!

My least favourite track on the LP. I dunno, doesn't really build to anything super satisfying for me personally and the vocal melodies, especially at the beginning, kind of rub me the wrong way.

Kristy w/ The Sparkling Teeth

Very pleasant closer to the EP, a predictable note to end on but a solid one nonetheless. Doesn't tickle my fancy as much as it does for some of you, but that's okay.

2,459 Miles

Maybe the most subtle song on the album? I dunno. It doesn't bring out the feels so much but it's still very enjoyable and Aaron's lyrics always stick out to me on this one.

Existential Dread, Six Hours Time

Whereas Bethlehem, WV causes me to float off uninterestedly, this song floats me away (?) in a good way. A lovely drone-y track with not much to it but still remains very enjoyable.

Another Head For Hydra

A pretty straight banger. Doesn't floor me, but is still super enjoyable to riot along to.

Break on Through (To the Other Side) [Pt.2]

A gorgeous closer. I only wish it was longer, because Aaron singing over that sad progression is everything lol.

Wendy & Betsy

Lots of you folks have been talking about this as the best track. It's fucking great, yes, no doubt about it. And as frightening and completely unhinged as Aaron sounds at the end of this (a truly stunning moment), the violent intensity doesn't do as much for me as a lot of the atmospheric intensity does on other songs (hence my preference for songs like Michael, [dormouse sighs], and Julia). All that being said, still an amazing track. Love the guitar work in the second verse too.

Winter Solstice

The changes from the acoustic rendition are minimal but this version still maintains the quality of the alternative. I like the instrumental near the back end.

Tortoises All The Way Down

BIG, BIG climax on this thing that is fucking glorious. "Everybody knows, son. Everybody knows just what you've done..."

Winter Solstice (alt. version)

The better version of this track, in my opinion. Tis a very close race though!

Talk about a kick in the fucking teeth. That's all I really have to say lol.

Cities of the Plain

The foray into ambience at the front end here really pays off in spades once the rest of the track finally bears its teeth.

[dormouse sighs]

The refrain at the end of this track is almost as good as the chord progression that sets the stage behind it. OOF.

August 6th

The best track off the EP. Lovely melodies that kill me and I just LOVE the way it ends.

New Wine, New Skins

My favourite climax of the new album. That guitar line is so fucking dope. And unlike other songs on here that really grab me by the throat for their climaxes, this is one where I feel especially invested from the get go. The more subdued build-up gives me just as many feels as the ending does.

Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore

This one took forever to click with me, but it finally has and I can agree that it's an amazing song. Probably due to the way so many of you hyped it up, I was expecting something completely different than what I got so I was a little underwhelmed on first listen. Since, it's really grown on me and I fully agree that's it's definitely an outstanding moment in mwY's career.

Julia (or, 'Holy to the LORD' on the Bells of Horses)

I can't really describe what makes me love this song so much. It may be burnt out for a few of you, but I never listen to singles so I heard this for the first time with the rest of the album, and it fuckin struck me hard. The dynamic between the heavy thrust of the loud guitars and drums going full swing with the melancholic tone of the song and Aaron singing as if he would on a quiet acoustic track.. it just works so fucking well and I especially love his melodies on this song.
