| REC Me Some Australian Rock and Prog
Like some, I initially entered the Australian rock market with Silverchair (#1 below). Unlike many on Sputnik, I was a big fan of Frogstomp. My next foray was Grinspoon (#2 below). Fast forward a few years to Wolfmother (#3 below), and I dug both their initial album and Cosmic Egg a lot. About 4 years ago or so, I finally found Karnivool (#4). This led me into bands like Like Thieves (#5) and Dead Letter Circus (#6), which were excellent and progressive. I then realized that I had missed out on Memento (#7), a relatively unheard Australian/US band during the Nu-Metal years. Recently, through Sputnik, I found Lucid Planet (#8), Breaking Orbit (#9), and Twelve Foot Ninja (#10), which are all spectacular. Also became aware of Caligula's Horse, Chaos Divine, Cog, Sydonia, and Temple of Thieves. Please let me know if you have any excellent rock/prog recs! | 1 | | Silverchair Frogstomp
I know they were derivative of grunge and Tool, but dug them a lot anyways. | 2 | | Grinspoon Guide to Better Living
A great mix of metal, punk, and other genres. | 3 | | Wolfmother Cosmic Egg
Another great mix of Led Zep, Black Sabbath, with stoner rock thrown in to boot. | 4 | | Karnivool Themata
Not a better couple of albums than Themata and Sound Awake. | 5 | | Like Thieves The Wolves At Winter's Edge
Both this EP and "Autumn's Twilight" are pretty awesome! | 6 | | Dead Letter Circus The Catalyst Fire
Also dig "This is the Warning" | 7 | | Memento Beginnings
A great progressive nu-metal album. | 8 | | Lucid Planet Lucid Planet | 9 | | Breaking Orbit The Time Traveller | 10 | | Twelve Foot Ninja Outlier
Brings back memories of Mr. Bungle and early Incubus | |

07.30.18 | Check Cog. They're probably right up your alley. | tyman128
07.30.18 | Sick Puppies
they are more like alt rock, but their album "Dressed Up As Life" is pretty great | JDubb
07.30.18 | Excellent. What album(s) would you recommend from Cog? | BlazinBlitzer
07.30.18 | The New Normal definitely. "The Spine" is my favorite from there; it's very Karnivool-like. | bgillesp
07.30.18 | Floating Me!!! | bgillesp
07.30.18 | S/t | teamster
07.30.18 | Voyager

07.31.18 | Mildlife | keza
07.31.18 | I just reviewed Midnight Oil's Head Injuries - it's got a touch of prog in there and it's fantastic. As for modern reccys try The Smith Street Band (Throw Me In the River) or DZ Deathrays for something lighter. Also seconding the Drones | kalkwiese
07.31.18 | If you know and like Caligula's Horse you should definetly check Arcane (Chronicles Of The Waking Dream). | geezers1989
07.31.18 | Alchemist (prog metal, early work more DM)
Shihad | JDubb
07.31.18 | I checked out Arcane today...their album Known/Learned is Absolutely awesome. Also checked out Sick Puppies - Dressed up as Life, and other than radio friendly songs, it was very good. Still having some difficulty feeling Cog... | JDubb
08.02.18 | Thanks again everyone for the Recs. Listened to videos from them all. I dug the bands Jakob, We Lost the Sea, Dead City Ruins, and Shihad. I had heard Floating Me before and they are great listen too. | tyman128
08.02.18 | Dressed Up As Life was definitely their transition into radio rock, but a few songs like The Bottom and Howard's Tale are pretty great | OldCrime
08.02.18 | Shihad are kiwis | OldCrime
08.02.18 | Just heard a new Oz prog band today called Southern Empire. New album is called Civilisation. | kalkwiese
08.02.18 | Yea, man, Known/Learned is great, too, I prefer Chronicles though (I think it has better songwriting overall). | Dewinged
08.02.18 | You definitely need to hear The Butterfly Effect. "Final Conversation of Kings" or "Imago" will do. | Donchivo
08.07.18 | try vauxdvihl for som nice and dark prog metal from the great southern Wastelands... | StolenIdentity
08.07.18 | The Drones [3]
Also check out Birds of Tokyo. It’s Karnivool frontman Ian Kenny’s other band. Some of their work is quite poppy but their latest album Brace leans more toward the darkness of Karnivool.
Maybe try The Getaway Plan also.
Hands Like Houses are also very popular right now in the rock space, although not my cup of tea.

08.09.18 | Good call on Birds of Tokyo - Brace. I had listened to them before and found them a bit weak, but that is a good album. |
