Triumph of Gloom
Thrash metal is just pop-punk with spikes, right?
There is a naked earnestness to Destroyer’s music that can seem almost crass and disingenuous, and Ken pushes this element to new extremes. But there is something dark curdling in Ken’s belly, and it makes for a compelling foil to the glossy, pearlescent production of this ‘80s roadside freakshow. A refutation of nostalgia while accessing old styles to exploit new anxieties. Stay lost.
BEAUTIFUL THUGGER GIRLS
A couple slots down from here I am going to argue for an album by positing how its success comes from its unconditional love for sources commonly attributed to bad taste and how it is then filtered through an artist whose worldview elevates those same sources to high art. What is Young Thug’s excuse? I am still figuring it out. I cannot recommend this album because I do not know if it is good, but fuck I listen to it A LOT. Yeehaw!

TL;DW: I'm sorry but this shit rips.
I see your pop music 0s and 1s and raise you a 2. A delightful subversion of pleasure triggers, a deliberate queering of the rigid, insular songwriting that has infiltrated the radio and weaponized poptimism so you can buy the same old shit in shinier, more cynical packaging. This might be the most impressive pop album I’ll hear this year, when bad taste is filtered through the one beholden eye to see it as high art. We should always be so lucky.
This one actually charted on my list but my goodness the grit that falls off this album as it writhers and coos is fucking pixie dust on the way to an ultraviolet Neverland.

Richard Dawson writes for a genre that will never speak for a populace, let alone a generation, like it once did. But Peasant should. The crossover acid bard folk you didn’t know we needed. We need it.
Relatives In Descent
If only my disaffected rage were this graceful, charming, cool. Alas! My fist pump looks like a startled ostrich caught in an electric fence. Still I pump!
Here is an album outside of my ability as a critic. Beautiful and befuddling in its dense, serene simplicity, an arresting marriage of classical composition and kitchen-sink avant-garde electronic shuffling. Also the first record I’ve ever owned that is delightfully formatted for Side A of its wax. The kind of album to get lost in and left spinning until you come back down to earth.
