12.12.17 | Wow you like these guys a whole lot more than me |
TheSpirit
12.12.17 | their first 3 are all pretty important to me, but i was like ... right in that early adolescence sweet spot when they first came around |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | I like 6 more than you do
I like 4 less than you do
Change your list to match my exact tastes pls thx |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | But yeah first 3 are king so whatever m/ |
cold
12.12.17 | Anything over S/T and Iowa is just blasphemous |
TheSpirit
12.12.17 | Nah. I mean clearly i love them all, but Vol. 3 has a very special feel. It's one of their heaviest but also (obviously) the most melodic. |
Koris
12.12.17 | For me, from best to worst:
All Hope is Gone (4/5)
Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. (4/5)
Iowa (3.5/5)
Vol. 3 (3.5/5)
Slipknot (3/5)
The Gray Chapter (3/5) |
cold
12.12.17 | I feel you, that S/T has a special place in my heart. I just remember being in 6th grade when it came out and hearing it on the school bus and thought it was the heaviest shit I had heard up until then. |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | Vermillion is 5/5 |
cold
12.12.17 | Slipknot>Iowa>Vol. 3>Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat>All Hope Is Gone>The Gray Chapter |
Koris
12.12.17 | I never heard the band's nu metal stuff when I was younger, so I have no special connection to it in that regard :] |
AsleepInTheBack
12.12.17 | s/t all the way. not a bad ranking otherwise. |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | 2 has to be 1. I remember being in like 6th-7th grade when that album came out and it seemed like it was taking over the world with almost no radio or TV air play. I still dig the record when I hear it. |
AsleepInTheBack
12.12.17 | yeah man, it's such a nostalgia listen for me, to the extent that I still love it even though my taste has moved on |
DinosaurJones
12.12.17 | Haven't heard MFKR, but this seems pretty accurate. Slipknot aren't really a band I seek out anymore, but when they come on, I can usually get down to it pretty well, some songs are still awesome.
Though I was never really that into Iowa. |
cold
12.12.17 | "I never heard the band's nu metal stuff when I was younger"
Those first two releases are totallyyyyyyy not nu-metal, hahaha |
bloc
12.12.17 | Vol. 3 is brilliant. Never liked anything else they did though |
ZombieToyDuck
12.12.17 | oh back in the days when I thought my slipknot chain wallet was cool... anyhow I'd probably pick vol 3 as 1 too then its a toss up between Iowa and Self Titled for 2nd |
Koris
12.12.17 | @coldheaven: Iowa's a mix of nu-metal, groove metal, and some occasional death metal :] |
Yotimi
12.12.17 | still remember jamming their debut at FYE in the mall in 1999. admittedly still like it, but nothing else they've ever done |
EyesWideShut
12.12.17 | Iowa was the first death metal album i listened to |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | Corey's vocals are the only thing I don't LOVE about Vol 3, but that's just because of how good his screams were on the first two albums. Corey himself has said that they had better takes and he was upset with how he turned out in the final product. Other than that, it's my #1 but Iowa and self titled had such an impact on me that really the top 3 are all my #1 |
cold
12.12.17 | I will go to my grave disputing on what is/isn't Nu-Metal, garshdangit |
Koris
12.12.17 | A few people just commented yesterday that Terra Incognita by Gojira is nu metal-oriented, so I guess anything goes these days |
bloc
12.12.17 | IT WAS ME WHO SAID THAT YEAH SO WHAT
Terra does have that nu-metal sound c'mon maaaaan |
Koris
12.12.17 | Kinda, but I'd say the death metal and metalcore stuff is what's predominately there |
bloc
12.12.17 | Death metal? Nah man, I would say groove metal |
Koris
12.12.17 | lol, I don't know why I've been arguing so much about genres for the past few days. It's getting so convoluted right now |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | Terra definitely has nu-metal influences, dude.
And the first two Slipknot albums are absolutely nu-metal (for God's sake, they have songs where Corey is rapping and there are DJ scratches, no solos anywhere to be found, angsty lyrics, etc). |
Koris
12.12.17 | Yeah, I always considered Slipknot's early stuff nu-metal. Whereas their later stuff is more like a traditional heavy metal/alt-metal hybrid |
DungeonBoy
12.12.17 | Aaaaannnnd you lost me. Always enjoy your lists though, keep em comin |
cold
12.12.17 | "Corey is rapping and there are DJ scratches"
Well, they've always had a DJ so I can't associate DJ's with Nu-Metal just because Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park exists. And isn't "Spit It Out" the only song with rapping in it? |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | No Life comes to mind but there is def rapping sprinkled throughout. And it's the DJ scratches plus the other things I mentioned. It's pretty damn nu-metal. |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | On a side note, what's up with that retarded album cover for Gray Chapter? |
cold
12.12.17 | Ya got me on "No Life". I think because when that came out, rock was polluted with Korn knock-offs and the hyper-emergence of the new wave of Pop-Punk. So when Slipknot came out it just knocked me on my ass and sounded nothing like it at the time. So, I probably still look at that album with rose-colored glasses on. |
cold
12.12.17 | I have the same reaction when people try to tell me System Of A Down is Nu-Metal |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | Oh, don't get me wrong man I still love the shit out of that album. And yeah dude, I was listening to that shit back in 99 when it first came out so I totally get that - it was like the heaviest thing I have heard (other than some death metal) up until that point.
But it's still nu. |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | And in terms of System, I was actually under the impression that was nu-metal too until everyone on Sputnik disagreed with me so who knows lol
Love both bands either way, though |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | To me, this isn't really a nu-metal record. There are definitely elements of it throughout, but the core of this album doesn't revolve around the rapping or DJ scratching. They're secondary traits used sparingly. The ferocity and relative brutality of this (dare I use that term here lol) keep this from fitting in alongside the nu-metal bands of its time. |
cold
12.12.17 | Well, we agree to disagree on Slipknot, ahahah. But I think in the case of a lot of bands (SOAD in particular), the fact they were either "rock" or "metal" but came out during the Nu-Metal explosion, they got kind of lumped in with the Nu-Metal movement. I've actually had arguments with people about Orgy being Nu-Metal. What kind of shart is that? |
cold
12.12.17 | "The ferocity and relative brutality of this (dare I use that term here lol) keep this from fitting in alongside the nu-metal bands of its time."
Perfectly put :) |
Koris
12.12.17 | To be fair, I can definitely understand the argument against Slipknot being nu-metal. They have a lot of extreme metal traits (especially groove metal and metalcore) that differentiate them from many of the acts of the time |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | Orgy lol. Forgot about that band and all their edgy, techy, futuristic rock. Haven't listened to them since they were actually on MTV |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | Lmao didn't they have like one song? |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | I remember thinking "Stitches" ruled when I was young. Can't remember any others lol |
TheSpirit
12.12.17 | s/t and Iowa definitely have elements of extreme metal, but I would only ever really consider them nu-metal. The simplicity of the riffs, how percussive it all is, the downtuned guitars, etc... Vol. 3 broke away from that and opened them to a new bunch of textures. Poppier but also heavier. Stuff like "Three Nil" has legit death metal sections in it, working in tandem w/ the chunky nu-metal riffage. I don't hear any metalcore at all in it. After Vol. 3, they definitely went more groove-oriented. |
cold
12.12.17 | Orgy’s “Candyass” is a really good album. I would implore you guys to listen to it in full. |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | Agreed hard Mayhem. Still enjoy those early albums when I hear them. Hate their more recent albusm though... |
bloc
12.12.17 | Ughhhh Stitches is so fuckin good yeah. Orgy has a handful of great tracks. Their Blue Monday cover is kinda corny though, I used to love it though haha |
Relinquished
12.12.17 | lmao Orgy forgot about them |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | Aw, Grey Chapter has some great moments. I like it more than All Hope is Gone - that one seems more uneven and like it has no idea what it wants to be. |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | Damn Blue Monday lol, now that you mention it I can hear that simple bass melody in my head. Good jam when I was a kid |
Relinquished
12.12.17 | "The ferocity and relative brutality of this (dare I use that term here lol) keep this from fitting in alongside the nu-metal bands of its time"
you mean the time of Mushroomhead, Mudvayne, and Soulfly? |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | I think people generally think of Nu-metal as stuff like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, POD, etc etc. All of those bands you mentioned are a little more peculiar because they're just as much metal as nu-metal. Early Mushroomhead is the only one you mentioned where I would use "nu-metal" as maybe their main genre. |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | Is Sleepytime Gorilla Museum nu-metal? |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | Yeah bud I saw them when they toured with Papa Roach in '00 |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | Ahahaha I actually saw Papa Roach in 2001. Oh Jesus. They were playing with System of a Down and Korn, it was heaven. |
Relinquished
12.12.17 | slipknot were heavier than their most of their peers but they weren't that out of place. I remember those days still pretty clearly.
"they're just as much metal as nu-metal"
as opposed to whining over weak groovy "funky" riffs? |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | I'm simply saying it isn't THE best label for them. If you feel otherwise, then go ahead and call them nu-metal. We agree that they have some obvious nu-metal characteristics.
@Lucca. Roach's first album was so sick when I was a kid. A shame that they decided to essentially torpedo their own ship and turned to dog shit so quickly. |
MoosechriS
12.12.17 | I’d probably go 2,3,1,4,5,6. The s/t was a huge gateway for me when it came out, also the 10th anniversary editions of the self titled and iowa are both amazing. |
Relinquished
12.12.17 | I was gonna get into this whole "back when it was all labeled as 'nu-metal' vs. 'alternative metal' " thing but it's so dumb in retrospect. |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | Haha agreed. |
TheSpirit
12.12.17 | anyone else remember when they (slipknot), lamb of god, killswitch, shadows fall, and basically all early 2000's metalcore bands were called 'the new wave of american heavy metal" |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | Yeah that was a nice little run they had there for like 6-7 years, then they all turned to dog shit. |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | @Spirit - hell yeah I do, I remember trying to resell Slipknot to my friends and say "no bro they aren't nu-metal they're this other genre" lol
And agreed, Kj |
TheSpirit
12.12.17 | this thread ended up being a lot more wholesome than i would have initially thought. |
MoosechriS
12.12.17 | @ spirit - yeah, i read metal hammer every month back then and they were using it constantly. Chimaira and hatebreed were usually lumped in the list of bands too. |
KjSwantko
12.12.17 | I always had a super sweet spot for Chimaira. Everything they did up through Resurrection I was a big fan of- especially self titled and The Impossibility of Reason. m/ |
MoosechriS
12.12.17 | me too, they went a bit off the boil from infection onwards but it still enjoy those records |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.12.17 | Chimaira's self titled still gets a regular gym rotation from me. Work actually ends in 2 minutes and I'm heading to the gym, will throw that on now aha
Also yeah Impossibility of Reason got me into them, that was the shit back in the day |

TheSpirit
12.12.17 | i still listen to a lot those 2000-2006 records, but i don't think i like anything from those bands past that point. something weird happened and most of them just started stagnating real hard |

same here, i remember someone summing it all up in an interview years ago ib regards to the scene. They said that basically most late 90's - early 00's bands were metal bands influenced by hardcore or vise versa, wheras after that point they were metalcore bands influenced by metalcore bands and that's when the genre bacame a stale caricature of itself basically. |

12.13.17 | That's it! That album was pretty raw when I think about it, then they started churning out buttrock crap with "Break The Cycle". |
KjSwantko
12.13.17 | Big style change for sure between those 2 records. I definitely enjoy Break the Cycle though, at least as far as mainstream music goes. "It's Been Awhile" is a classic. |
Brabiz
12.13.17 | Self titled is great, iowa isn't as good i think. 3 is good, but too commercial for my tastes. All Hope Is Gone is fantastic imo, and 5 is just kinda... eh. |
