Overlooked 2017 Recs
Some albums I think you missed and that you might dig. Some will be in my EOTY list anyway. List is chronoperipetal order of release. |
1 | | Cold Body Radiation The Orphean Lyre
Shoegazy with a blackgaze flavour. The drums sound a bit cheap but the rest is mighty fine. |
2 | | Rata Negra Oido Absoluto
Crust dark punk in Spanish with female lead. Ugly and ulcerated. |
3 | | Gidge LNLNN
I've rec'd this in comps hundred times. Minimal ambient tecno. Glorious shite. |
4 | | A Projection Framework
Dark Post Punk. Really well polished sound and some nice bangers. |
5 | | Lazerhawk Dreamrider
Totally stole this from MO. 80s synth paraphernalia. I mean, look at that fucking cover. |
6 | | Avec Le Soleil Sortant De Sa Bouche Pas pire pop, I Love You So Much
Krautrock from Montreal. Not a big fan of the vocals but those instrumentals are...mmmmm... |
7 | | Botany Raw Light ll
Downtempo electronic, I don't know, it blew my mind at first but now it kinda grew off a bit. Worth a check though. |
8 | | Menace Beach Lemon Memory
While some songs are a bit annoying and samey there are exactly 2 tracks that are AMAZING. Track 2 and the closer. |
9 | | Charlie Cunningham Lines
Excellent opener track but then it turns to be a bit flat singer songwriter rambling. Still, a pleasant album, very good acoustic (is it a classic?) guitar picking, perfect in the right mood. |
10 | | Okada Floating Away from the World
Ambient droning masturbation. 4 tracks, around 15 minutes each. |
11 | | Toothless The Pace of the Passing
Who the hell is Bombay Bicycle Club!? Well, this guy played bass there. J/k, really nice and chill album. |
12 | | Ninet Tayeb Paper Parachute
The singer that stole Steven Wilson's show when she was featured in "Pariah". |
13 | | Palehorse/Palerider Burial Songs
I rec'd this on the Pallbearer thread and it's getting posi response. Deserved though, album is great. |
14 | | Shannon Wright Division
Haven't found quite the public for this yet. Her music is really weird, droning, brooding songs that carry a lot of weight and some sparkles of madness. |
15 | | Elegi Bånsull
Probably the bleakest ambient album I've heard this year. |
16 | | Hand Habits Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void)
Veeeeery chill indie pop. Pretty but it drags a little. |
17 | | Lowly Heba
This is in my top 5 this year and wanted to review it before the year ends. Minimal synthpop, with godly production and such a strong presence. |
18 | | Dutch Uncles Big Balloon
A slightly different take on indie rock, can't say if it's good or bad, but it's definitely different and personal. |
19 | | Shadow Band Wilderness of Love
Indie folk rock, only a couple of votes?! Deserves more! |
20 | | Life on Venus Encounters
Shoegaze to the very core. |
21 | | Methyl Ethel Everything is Forgotten
Indie pop with a good dose of psychedelic and experimental , female fronted. |
22 | | Fink Fink's Sunday Night Blues, Vol. 1
Like the title says, folk blues, not among his best material but pretty decent. |
23 | | JFDR Brazil
I would say it's a bit similar to early Bjork but what's Bjork doing nowadays anyway? Better check it yourself. her collabo with Lapalux was great. |
24 | | Parlor Walls Opposites
This is a hit and miss. Guitar/vocals, drums and a sax. Not more, nor less. Unique (now Papa) hated this so you might like it! ;) |
25 | | Adna Closure
Nice atmospheric indie pop, very sweet voice although her songwriting is not up there just yet. |
26 | | Jacaszek Kwiaty
One of my favourite electronic/ambient releases this year. Simply beautiful. |
27 | | The Bug vs Earth Concrete Desert
Droooooone and daaaaaark. Incredible this has only 5 votes considering the two gentlemen involved. |
28 | | Hauschka What If
This will tickle you and make your brain chuckle. |
29 | | Saltland A Common Truth
Cello overdose, cello in your veins, cello with... Member of Thee Silver Mt. Zion. |
30 | | Tei Shi Crawl Space
Not the best indie pop album released this year but it deserves some more love. |
31 | | Caddywhompus Odd Hours
Guitar and drum. Two beautiful young men doing math rock extravaganza. Believe. |
32 | | Part Chimp IV
Stoner, sludge, heavy and moody. |
33 | | Tigerwine Die With Your Tongue Out
Now that Glassjaw is on the rise again, check these guys too. Nice blend of emo, hardcore, etc... |
34 | | Trans Am California Hotel
I can't remember if this was instrumental or not, but I remember it left me with a good impression. I recall it being psyche rock, tbh, it's been a while since I jammed it. |
35 | | Galley Beggar Heathen Hymns
One of those witch prog bands I like. Pagan chants around the bonfire. |
36 | | Harem Scarem United
Among the healthiest bands left from a dead hard rock era. |
37 | | Thyrant What We Leave Behind
This is actually a close friend of mine, but it's also a heavy metal's "best of genres" blend together that will surprise you. |
38 | | Yazz Ahmed La Saboteuse
It's been a lot of under the radar jazz this year: Alfa Mist, Angle 9 (well these guys raised more than eyebrow), Moon Hooch's EP. This is one more for your collection. |
39 | | Demen Nektyr
Some day, in some place, people will praise Demen as she deserves. Supah atmospheric vocal ambient. This is looking at the abyss right in the fucking eye. |
40 | | Harvestman Music for Megaliths
So many Neurosis fans and only a few noticed this Steve Von Till's side project release. It's not his best but still. |
41 | | Pumarosa The Witch
In zakalwe's words "hipster bastard shit but good". |
42 | | She-Devils She-Devils
The project of Audrey Ann Boucher and Kyle Jukka from Montreal. Great indie and dream pop, very chill. |
43 | | Iiah Distances
Superb post-rock. |
44 | | The Heliocentrics A World Of Masks
You definitely need this in your catalogue, cause you don't have anything like it. |
45 | | Molly Nilsson Imaginations
Electro pop with some interesting twists. |
46 | | Moonchild Voyager
Soul, trip hop ala Nujabes, Sade, it's alright, can't say it blew my mind. |
47 | | Norska Too Many Winters
Side project of YOB's Aaron Rieseberg, so you know what to expect. |
48 | | Ouri Superficial
Ambient electronic stuff, some really nice moments here. |
49 | | Sam Amidon The Following Mountain
The man is a genious, and hence not many understand him. Folk that only Amidon can conceive. |
50 | | Chihei Hatakeyama Mirage
I don't know if the database is on drugs or this guy released 5 albums this year. Well it's ambient, so I guess you can produce this much. |
51 | | Panda Riot Infinity Maps
Really sweet shoegaze. Six recently reviewed and I think it deserves some more attention. Thoughts? |
52 | | Tuesday The Sky Drift
What a name you would think. And I can't blame you. Ex-member of Fates Warning does ambient post-rock. |
53 | | Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra Vula
Actually the name promised more than it really was. |
54 | | The Dears Times Infinity Volume Two
Not a bad album but it drags a bit. It has one of my favorite tracks this year though, and I am the only that rated it. You can change that. |
55 | | DWNTWN Racing Time
I have honestly no idea what to make out of this. Opener is pretty good then... |
56 | | A Thousand Hours Sleep
According to the people behind the project it was supposed to be a This Mortal Coil kinda thing. |
57 | | Dvne Asheran
Nothing to do with that movie with Sting and the sand worms. Great stoner output. |
58 | | Mappe Of A Northern Star, A Perfect Stone
The avg for this is crazy. Really well produced and executed folk/singer songwriter. Not exactly my cup of tea but I see why it shines. |
59 | | The Midnight Ghost Train Cypress Ave.
That feeling in the morning when pouring whisky into your coffee. |
60 | | Sote Sacred Horror In Design
If you would only knew what a madman can do with his mind. |
61 | | Briana Marela Call It Love
Dream pop, a bit cringie and happy happy let's be in love and let me brush your back in the shower with this 200$ shampoo but her voice is very soothing and it's very well produced. |
62 | | Frankie Rose Cage Tropicale
This dropped in mid-august bringing that coast dream pop summer vibes. |
63 | | Deep Sands Intended Dream
Homie Gonzo's project and it rips. Stonerrrrrr. |
64 | | UNKLE The Road, Pt. 1
The fact this has 8 votes is very saddening. |
65 | | The Yawpers Boy in a Well
Great Garage rock among other genre twisting. |
66 | | Nadine Shah Holiday Destination
Best cover/title combo this year and greatly underrated artist. |
67 | | Widowspeak Expect the Best
Very good indie pop album that will undoubtedly disappear in the shadows of time. |
68 | | INHEAVEN Inheaven
Even myself forgot to rate this. You can be first! Indie rock. |
69 | | Lotte Kestner Off White
And again, forgot to rate it myself even if I jammed it like last week. Another lo-fi gem by Kestner. |
70 | | Mary Epworth Elytral
Kind of strange, very noisy at times electronic pop. |
71 | | The Stargazer Lilies Lost
They maxed the settings so much in this shit that it almost disappears in its own gazing. |
72 | | Anna Of The North Lovers
I am starting to think I listened to way more indie pop than I should this year. |
73 | | Kadavar (DE) Rough Times
Psychedelic rock for vampires. |
74 | | Radio Moscow New Beginnings
Same but for werewolves. |
75 | | Cults Offering
Indie pop duo that melted my heart a tiny bit. |
76 | | Lo! Vestigial
Crushing stuff |
77 | | TOKiMONSTA Lune Rouge
Not a great avg tbh but you can change that chump! Bunch of electronic tunes and features, |
78 | | No Warning Torture Culture
Comeback of the classic old school hardcore outfit. I thing the singer plays now in Fucked Up? |
79 | | Kllo Backwater
It will surprise you. Maybe. |
80 | | YAY BLYNN YAY BLYNN
This was rec'd to me by Atari, really nice singer songwriter EP. Promising artist. |
81 | | Adimiron Et Liber Eris
Indie Recordings is releasing new metal bands left and right. This is one of the latest additions to their roster. |
82 | | Casper Skulls Mercy Works
Indie rock with male/female vocals, it gets the job done. |
83 | | Electric Eye From the Poisonous Tree
These guys have GROWN from the last album. Seriously good psyche rock. |
84 | | The Corrs Jupiter Calling
Like... for real. |
85 | | Dillon Kind
A very intriguing and unexplored artist who deserves more attention. |
86 | | The Knells Knells II
The fact of having 3 choral singers in this post rockish band is incredible in the first 2 tracks then it gets a bit too heavy. |
87 | | Langhorne Slim Lost At Last, Vol 1
Another Atari rec. Reminds me a lot to Bob Dylan but again, I don't know much about Bob Dylan ;) |
88 | | Loreen Ride
From Eurovision banger to dark diva. Quite a feast for the ears. |
89 | | The Staves and yMusic The Way Is Read
How can someone not like the Staves, and what about ymusic??? And how about them together!?? |
90 | | Karine Polwart & Pippa Murphy A Pocket of Wind resistance
Part singing, part fairy tale (or history, can't remember, fell asleep to it twice). Very relaxing and pretty. |
91 | | Virginia Wing and XAM Duo Tomorrow's Gift
Very cinematic and chill, it drags a little but it's interesting. |
