|Metallica - Studio albums ranked|
Take this ranking with a grain of salt. It's almost impossible to rank these albums when you enjoy all the different styles Metallica have utilized in their career. Generally, this is a list I can stand by, but when I'm in another mood I might look at it a little differently.
Let me know what you agree or disagree with, if you got the time. Always interested in hearing other people's opinions.
Master of Puppets
Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning are pretty interchangeable for me and The Black Album is very close behind these two.
Ride the Lightning
Kill 'Em All
Kill 'Em All is fantastic and so is Justice, except the production on the latter is basically dry ass.
...And Justice for All
Hardwired... to Self-Destruct
I completely adore Hardwired, but it would probably be heresy to rank it above any of the classics.
Reload and Load are both strong hard rock outputs with great writing and compositions, but feature a few weaker tracks that are somewhat forgettable.
I couldn't bring myself to rank Death Magnetic above Load and Reload for two reasons: its tracks don't feel as iconic and the sound production is absolutely horrendous (see "loudness war"). It's a great album, but it's the one I've listened to the least.
Most people would agree with this being at the bottom, but I'm actually among those who loved this album. It's just difficult to place it any higher because of how fantastic Metallica's other work is. I never disliked the drum sound and I enjoy every single song. The eponymous St. Anger and Frantic are the tracks I don't care as much for as the rest, but overall: this record is underrated!
