Perfect Songs ROUND 2

alright..
1Meredith Monk
Songs of Ascension

The overlying theme of perfect songs is decked out by a loose theme this round. I want a perfect song that incorporates strings into its structure.. It could be a full string section, could be a single violin or cello.. How well the strings meld into the song, boosting it or supporting it is the key, I suppose.. Any score that's less that 3.5 this round will be eliminated..

As an example and potential rec to you guys, the piece called "Ascent" from the album on the left is that perfect strings song for me..

Participants are:
Fripp, PistolPete, Aerisavion, Drifter, Avatagamos, Con, VirtualBlaze, Friv, brainmelter, Blitz, cyl, Toad, Ars, Sandwich, neeka, Uni, Yotimi, Chorts, Dino, Astral, MO, Futures, budgie, Sint, Boney, Doof, Hans, Dctarga, johnnydeking.
2Arthur Russell
World of Echo

Sandwich

See Through - fantastic atmosphere here.. shuddery and strange.. his voice is pretty meh, and the mystic intonations weren't too great, but that cracked, fractured cello is fucking amazing. 4/5
3Yndi Halda
Enjoy Eternal Bliss

Dino

Illuminate My Heart, Darling - cinematic, engrossing, autumnal bliss.. simply beautiful.. had some patchy moments during the louder parts, but always redeemed.. fuck, this was good.. 4.5/5
4Mica Levi
Under The Skin OST

Uni

Andrew Void - wasn't too big on the movie (yea yea i know, we talked about this).. it's a good piece, eerie strings and the percussion is great.. nothing too phenomenal, but it's a score, so its main purpose is to advance plot and cue the viewer anyway.. by the skin of your teeth.. 3.5/5
5Mercury Rev
Deserter's Songs

Doof

Holes - the set-up before the big choruses lingers somewhere between dream pop and indie balladry.. builds steadily, then implodes into absolute beauty! lovely use of strings and the brass that comes in towards the end kicks it up another notch.. lovely stuff.. 4.5/5
6Have a Nice Life
Deathconsciousness

johnny

Hunter - didn't really justify the runtime for me.. it doesn't start paying off on all that lingering atmosphere until the five minute mark, which is when it gets gloriously good.. however, not much of that goodness actually came from the strings.. decent track of atmospheric emo or whatever this genre is.. sorry, my dude.. 3/5 ELIMINATED
7The Notwist
Neon Golden

Con

Solitaire - the drum machine really pulled a lot out of this otherwise pretty sad song.. that sputtering rhythm would have sounded miles better if it was done by human hands and not programmed in.. sorry, Con.. though I did like the overall atmosphere and will look into them a bit more.. 3/5 ELIMINATED
8Modest Mouse
The Moon & Antarctica

Dctarga

Lives - I'm apparently obliged to love this band and my previous listens to them, sporadic as they were, didn't sway me too much.. i don't know where all this whiny nasally midrange male vocalists were hiding before the 2000's indie explosion came along, but they polluted everything.. all that said, i enjoyed this song quite a bit.. taken out of the context of its own myth, it's simple and sparse and lovely.. 3.5/5
9Julia Holter
Have You In My Wilderness

Toad

Feel You - Toad, you can start proclaiming that I have shite taste in music.. i liked the underlying mood the strings and electronic hums created in the backdrop of the tune.. hated everything else.. too cutesy for my taste.. one feist was enough feist. 3/5 ELIMINATED
10Venetian Snares
My Downfall (Original Soundtrack)

Avant

Intergraation - this worked for me, strangely enough.. it didn't work miracles, but it worked.. though i will say that if this comes on my earphones, i'll likely pressed Next Song after the bare strings intro gives way to the 'insert electronic subgenre name' that followed.. 3.5/5
11Livingston Taylor
Bicycle

Drift

Last Letter - so this is James Blunt, right? i mean, i know Taylor is an old dog, but this James Blunt right? sorry, Drift, happy birthday, i love you, but not that way, because you're underage apparently and listen to too much Snoop Dogg.. 3/5 ELIMINATED
12David Sylvian
Blemish

Fripp

For the Love of Life - every time i listen to Sylvian, i feel exactly how i felt that one time that girl put a roll of gauze soaked in opium under my tongue.. which is to say, it's beautiful and overwhelming and leaves me feeling entirely empty after it's all over.. fuck! 4.5/5
13Comus
First Utterance

Friv

Diana - who the hell are these people? why have I not heard them before? this is fucking great! wonky and full of personality, love it.. 4/5
14Floating Points
Elaenia

Blaze

Silhouettes - very cool stuff.. reminded me heavily of French electronica that was really popular back home when i was a kid.. and the string section worked wonders for this.. 4/5
15Bill Evans
Waltz for Debby

Chorts

Waltz for Debby - Chorts, this didn't have any strings in it, it's just Evans and his rhythm section.. it's staggeringly beautiful, don't get me wrong, but what the hell!? ELIMINATED on the grounds of tomfoolery.. damn
16Deine Lakaien
April Skies

cyl

Slowly Comes My Night - the Scott Walker-esque vocals were pretty good, not great.. the arrangement was wonderful, though it did sometimes veer into sophisticated sea shanty territory.. 3.5/5
17High Five Spaceship
MMCCXV

Aeri

Team Dream - loved it, fucking woozy as all hell, more than enough to make up for the hamminess of the lyrics.. reminded me of Tricky, in that span between Maxinquaye and when he went to total shit.. 4/5
18Lisa Hannigan
Passenger

budgie

Home - i really love her voice, and I don't know why i was sleeping on listening to her solo stuff so long, given how her interplay with Damien Rice on O was gorgeous.. good one. 4/5
19Hiss Golden Messenger
Haw

Boney

Sufferer (Love my Conqueror) - this was decent alt. country with an indie edge.. but the use of strings was so intelligently deployed and so goddamn good.. wonderful.. 4/5
20The Swell Season
The Swell Season

neeka

The Swell Season - I was half sold just because the whole time i was thinking - "This is a song called Swell Season by the band Swell Season off the album Swell Season.." then the song turned out to be a gorgeous instrumental.. seriously gorgeous.. 4.5/5
21Estradasphere
It's Understood

brainmelter

The Princes - hell yes.. 5/5
22Pantha Du Prince
This Bliss

Yotimi

Howard Skempton - Lento - incredibly moving piece of music. i caught it in the right mood, and it hit me in all the right ways.. not something i could just put on.. but it did the good things to me. 4/5
23I Would Set Myself On Fire For You
Believes In Patterns

Sint

Twelve - god, the intro to this was so lovely and complex.. it sort of spiraled around the 2:30 mark, but kept doing some interesting things in the interim.. I don't know, Sint, stick around for next round, the parts I loved, I really really loved.. 3.5/5
24Grails
Chalice Hymnal

Blitz

After the Funeral - the atmospheric pieces this round were damn great.. plenty of bands for me to explore.. this is another brooding piece of beauty.. 4/5
25Weyes Blood
The Innocents

budgie

Hang On - strange vocal patterns to her, reminds me of Bulgarian folk music (which i love).. great stuff here.. 4/5
