Rnd 4: Pjorn Doesn't Hate Everything

Gonna do another weird round this time. Even though this round's theme is going to be very broad, its a type of music I generally hate, so the winner will probably be someone that recs the least shitty thing. Your contestants are: nazz, bloon, Ovrot, drifter, claire, sandwich, wolfe, ramon, dctarga, kris, latitudes, zip, clover, aaron, avagantamos, and sach
Colored Sands

ROUND 4 (single tracks)

Progressive Music (literally anything that could be considered prog)

Ovrot - 1
Ramon - 1
Clover - 1
2In Vain

"Culmination of the Enigma"

song was very metal, lots of riffs. vocals are were pretty standard "metal guy" stuff towards the beginning, but it did get a little more unique. drums were tight. there were lots of little individual parts that I thought were cool, but it'd be hard for me to jam this song all the way through again. didn't really dig the whispery vocals with acoustic guitars. can't really give this more than a 2.8/5.0
Blasphemy Made Flesh

"Pathological Frolic"

production was absolute shit on this, some of the worst guitar tone I've ever heard. everything but the bass and vocals sound like they were recorded two rooms away from the mic. some cool bass lines and stuff. I dug NSV but man, this song just didn't have much for me. 2.0/5.0
4Ved Buens Ende
Written In Waters

"I Sang for the Swans"

opening riff was immediately awesome and dissonant, definitely more up my alley as far as metal shit goes. riff about a minute in rules, bass lines are really interesting on this as well. prod is actually really good even tho its a metal album from 1995, kinda suprising. vocals were weird and great. probably gonna jam this album this weekend. 4.2/5.0 -WINNER-
The Veil Of Control

"Severed and Whole"

wow, i really dug the riffs on this one, drumming was actually very good too, which goes a long way for me. really appreciated that this was just instrumental too. really solid track with no wank and just lots of cool instrumentation. really dug it. 4.0/5.0
6Burnt By the Sun
Soundtrack to the Personal Revolution

"dow jones and the temple of doom"

yeah this ruled dude, suprised I haven't heard this. some dope mathcore, loved the vocals, riffs were sweet. easy comparison to make is botch obv, but that is fine with me. also gonna jam this whole record. fuckin ripped. 4.1/5.0
7The Ocean

cheesy piano stuff towards the beginning didn't give me much hope, strings came in and gave me less hope. ended up getting way better tho. got kinda doomy/sludgey, really dug the harmonic guitar part during the first "verse". in general, strings and orchestral stuff goes all over me, so any of that stuff turned me off. part around 5:45 was dope tho. 3.4/5.0
Sol Eye Sea I

despite the really fucking lame album art, this ended up being kinda cool. wasn't expecting the electronic shit at the beginning, but I dug it. reminded me of something that I can't quite put my finger on.. maybe some of the guitar parts on 'the always open mouth' ? either way, pretty solid stuff, but nothing incredible. I did expect it to change up and it was essentially just the same thing for 4 minutes. 3.0/5.0
9Inter Arma
Sky Burial

"The Survival Fires"

opening riff ruled, vocals were cool. was pretty standard dissoant bm stuff unti about 5minutes. really liked the low key slow tempo stuff around there, definitely the high point. even the cello or viola being played was not cheesy and fit really well. song was probably a little too long for me tho, was pretty samey after a while. solid track tho. 3.5/5.0
10Porcupine Tree
Fear of a Blank Planet

"Way Out of Here"

oh man, I fucking hate this band. lame electronic stuff at the beginning. hate his voice. lyrics were lame. production sounded really compressed and bad. super wanky solo half way through. I have no idea why this song is 8 minutes long. I like the slightly heavy part towards the end a tiny bit, but all in all this just sounds like diet-btbam but even lamer. 1.25/5.0 -ELIMINATED-
11Amon Duul II
Phallus Dei

"Luzifer's Ghilom"

didn't really know what to think of this, don't really like this style of drumming at all or guitar playing. not really into the borderline scat vocals. by 3 minutes it was already too much for me. only thing that made this any better than porcupine tree is that it was at least kinda weird. this wasn't for me at all. 1.75/5.0-
12The Web
i spider

"i Spider"

man i hated this one too, just boring as fuck, didn't like the weird key parts or the bell hits, didn't like his voice at all. just took for ever for anything remotely different to happen either. the horn solo is the only reason why this is getting a higher rating than the last two songs. 2.0/5.0
The Erosion of Sanity

"Hideous Infirmity"

as much as I love gorguts, wasn't really digging the production on this at all. still, it was well written, vocals were brutal, some cool riffs and drum stuff. not a fan of the solo, as per usual. pretty average by their standards tho imo. 3.0/5.0
14June of 44
The Anatomy of Sharks

"sharks and sailors"

had no idea what this was gonna be like at all. dug the riff at the begining, kinda math rocky/post hardcore-ish. this is probably the closest song this round to what I normally listen to. really liked the part around 3 minutes when they got a little softer, was a little to repetitive for me over all. i've said this a few times, but I don't really feel like the justified the song length on this one. cool stuff tho, will check more 3.9/5.0
15Petar Dundov
Sailing Off The Grid

"Holiday in Singularity"

man i feel bad but I just hate 4 to the floor style beats, it just does absolutely nothing for me. some cool sounds and stuff here and there, but that simple style of beat is just so uninteresting to me with electronic music. it wasn't wanky at least, so you survive this round. 2.0/5.0
Orbital 2

another 8+ minute song, took me 3 minutes to realize this was one of the songs on the fucking hackers soundtrack. technically i've heard this song, but I had no idea what it was called and it's been 10+ years, so I'll allow it. I don't have much analyisis of this one other than it made me feel extremely nostalgic and i'm probably gonna watch hackers this weekend. 3.5/5.0
17Okazaki Fragments

okay i see you ramon, i see you. kinda weird avant grind. i can't like, this fucking ripped and was only 2 minutes so I was extremely glad to hear this one by the time I got to it. i mean, you picked something dissonant that was kinda grindy with higher pitched screams and it wasn't long as fuck. I thought this was pretty goddamn cool. 4.1/5.0
