01.23.14 | Whichever school you end up attending you'll do great at though. What's important is that you developed the means to succeed during high school and that no matter where you go or what you do - wherever you get your degree from - you've already set yourself up for success.
You did the hard work to get where you are. If they didn't want you then you shouldn't want them back. |

01.23.14 | you don't wanna go to UVA anyway
I know a guy that went there and he's lame as fuck
plus if you're not in-state it's not nearly as appealing
though VA is definitely the best state for state school omg |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | thanks guys and yes endings im really happy for that i guess they were just a fluke or something but i cant go wrong with any of the other colleges out here
YakNips i love you baby |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | i know right the only thing about UVA is that the people are a little dry... im hoping for a school thats a little more exciting....and SeaAnemone- im actually in-state even though my user name says Cali |
Cygnatti
01.23.14 | "you don't wanna go to UVA"
lols, that's kinda where I'm headed to sometime. |
IbenizGEO1
01.23.14 | did you graduate with honors cause if you didnt that couldve made the difference |

IbenizGEO1
01.23.14 | well my highschool required 12 honors classes and 3.5+ to graduate with honors |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | thats funny i applied there too...but i checked it out and did not like it at all |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | shit Ibeniz |
IbenizGEO1
01.23.14 | yea and colleges wont care unless you graduate with your highschool's highest honors. if you didnt take enough classes
they wont see it and if they do they wont care |
Cygnatti
01.23.14 | so wait, you tried going to UVA, right? one of my friends applied there, it was her dream school too. she had tons and tons of community service, I think she was student president all 4 years too, she had like 4.3 GPA, took like 12 AP Classes (she was #4 of her class). and she didn't make it there either.
my older brother did make it tho, he had no community service and he was #7 of his year. he suspects that his friend, the girl earlier, didn't write a very good essay or something because that's really the only explanation here. |
IbenizGEO1
01.23.14 | so basically they pull lots with all the kids with A averages |
Ignimbrite
01.23.14 | As someone who went through this process a couple years back, I might be able to offer a little insight. You have to understand that Ivies and the like aren't trying to screw you over, nor are they even being especially unfair: it's just that, no matter how good you are, these schools attract applications from thousands of students just as good as you (or better). You have a 4.1 GPA? You're president of a service-oriented club? Yes, you are exceptional (I'm not even being facetious: that's impressive, and assuming you applied elsewhere you won't be forced to settle for a school that's anything less than great), but here's the problem: somewhere out there, there's a guy like you, but this guy has a 4.4 GPA and was class president and interned with a senator.
Basically, with certain, high-level schools, at a certain point it becomes less about how exceptional you are and more about pure, dumb luck. So the point here: don't beat yourself up. You're obviously a bright guy with an excellent future on your horizon, and as shitty as it may seem right now it isn't the end of the world. Keep with those applications (assuming the deadline hasn't passed... idk, it's been a while since I did this) and keep being as good a student as you've ever been. I promise that it will all work out. |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | it could be and i really think thats the only explination. all of my friends who got in had no extracurriculars and did no sports.....so i guess when they say they want a ''well-rounded" student and "wholistic application reviewing" they really mean "we look at your grades and nothing else" |
IbenizGEO1
01.23.14 | ''well-rounded" student and "wholistic application reviewing"
bull is bull |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | thanks Ignimbrite- every adult ive talked to has said what you did and it makes sense...there will be someone that had just a little better than you to beat you out and i recognize that, i guess it just came as a shock (the denial). i just thought for sure i was going to get in because i take classes there but it was a good wake up call to say the least...and there will always be next year |
Cygnatti
01.23.14 | "so i guess when they say they want a ''well-rounded" student and "wholistic application reviewing" they really mean "we look at your grades and nothing else""
not quite. my brother had slightly less grades than his friend, but she had all these community service and leadership shit, and she didn't make it while he did. (they both had like 4.4 or 4.3s tho). |
sumyunguy
01.23.14 | this was ages ago, but I had a 4.32 GPA, 1400 on SAT's, 10 AP classes, did sports, did community service, was a member of two clubs and got rejected from UCLA. Fucking UCLA. I mean it's a good school and all, but jesus I was pissed. I even got into Berkeley but not UCLA. So sometimes it just doesn't make any sense. Shit happens. |
kmace
01.23.14 | That's alright man, any school you go to is lucky to have you and you will continue to do exceptionally well. Just curious but what program/major did you apply for? |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | thanks kmace, i applied to major in Biology and minor in music |
FromDaHood
01.23.14 | UCLA and Berkeley are basically equivalent. Also, how the hell do you get a 4.32 GPA? GPA numbers are so fucking useless because every high school inflates the hell out of them. I had a 3.6 and I don't think I deserved it.
Should have applied to U-M, best public school in the nation and you probably would have had a chance : ) |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | if youre from da hood having a 3.6 is pretty damn honorable |
FromDaHood
01.23.14 | Yeah my school didn't even have honors classes |
Cygnatti
01.23.14 | Generally, AP classes and some other kinds of classes are ways to get your GPA aboe 4.0. |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
01.23.14 | i kno some dumb af ppl that made it into uva lol u got shafted man sleep more study less |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | goddammit |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
01.23.14 | sorry bro =[ |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
01.23.14 | did you call and ask what the fuck theyre thinking |
climactic
01.23.14 | they saw ur ratings |
FromDaHood
01.23.14 | Yeah do that for sure. Also, it's easier to get in as a transfer student I had like a 2.7 college GPA when I applied for a transfer and landed a $16k/year scholarship (which still wasn't worth it but w/e) |
FromDaHood
01.23.14 | omg clim |
sumyunguy
01.23.14 | AP classes at my high school got a 1 point boost, meaning an A is worth 5 points, a B 4 etc. Honestly, it's not that much of an inflation because an AP course is WAY harder than its non-AP equivalent. I was ranked 7th in my graduating class of 755. Honestly, I don't think I'll ever not resent UCLA haha. |
Dunpeal
01.23.14 | honestly thought this guy was gonna say some ivy league shiz then came the plot twist |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
01.23.14 | yea |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | yeah ill definately call them and ask...i actually take classes up there heck ill just ask in person
FromDaHood- yeah i was thinking ill just apply next year and work up some really nice classes its not like i can never apply again
sumyunguy- yes im feeling resent towards UVA now and itll be awhile till i just accept the fact that i wasnt what they were looking for |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | and Dunpeal i hope you dont think UVA is an easy school |
Dunpeal
01.23.14 | i don't think anything. just when ppl say dream school that's what comes to mind. but at the end of the day i don't know what u intend to study and what programs they provide. they might have a stellar program for anthropological fellatio rituals for all i know |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | yeah thats true, the only reason i applied is because they have a class where you only talk about sputnik |
MMX
01.23.14 | Transferring to UNLV because fuck out of State Tuition
and yeah I don't understand that either your scores are exceptional, I would have accepted you
I still do winky face |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | thanks baby hope the transfer goes good |
MMX
01.23.14 | I already surpass the requirements by a mile, I'm not even worried but thanks babes |
FromDaHood
01.23.14 | wow you wanted to get into ucla with a B+ equivalent and a 2100 no wonder they busted your ass |
climactic
01.23.14 | jokes aside that sucks, i wasnt really in love with any schools so my rejections werent as disappointing lol. youll get in somewhere great with those numbers |
Hyperion1001
01.23.14 | best school i got accepted into was emory but that shit was expensive as fuck so im going to a state school for free
at this point as long as youre going to a state research university the cheaper the better. a degree from ivy league probably wont outweight the debt unless you're really a top tier student. |
FromDaHood
01.23.14 | ^this is true unless you're going to like Wharton/marry well
Congrats on Emory though, Harvard of Atlanta |
sumyunguy
01.23.14 | "wow you wanted to get into ucla with a B+ equivalent and a 2100 no wonder they busted your ass"
lol, first of all a 1400 was fucking 96th percentile that year. also, it's not a B+ average at all. you're working under the assumption that ALL my classes were AP's, which they obviously weren't. I got like 10 B's in high school total, and 4 of them were during second semester of senior year (senioritis). and again, UCLA is a good school, but it's not like they're fucking elite or anything. so yeah, get the facts straight. |
FromDaHood
01.23.14 | Considering it's the 3rd ranked public school in the nation with something like a 2% out of state acceptance rate I'd call it elite.
Sorry I insulted your pride, you should probably let go |
sumyunguy
01.23.14 | you didn't insult my pride, you were just misinformed that's all, and I just thought I should clarify. also, I'm from California so I'm not out of state. And the fact that at least a dozen people from my high school got into UCLA with noticeably worse statistics than mine certainly didn't help the way I felt. when I say elite, I mean like Harvard. If someone gets into Harvard, that's like holy shit congratulations, that's amazing. If someone got into UCLA at my high school, it was like oh great job and that's about it. |
FromDaHood
01.23.14 | Well you probably went to a good high school then. Just because your bros got in doesn't detract from the university's general standing |
sumyunguy
01.23.14 | agreed. but like i said, when less qualified people get in and you don't, it sucks regardless. |
kmace
01.23.14 | Interesting combination to major and minor in. My high school had 4 AP classes total so there was no way I was getting into any Ivy League schools despite a solid GPA/SAT. Although I don't know if I would want to be in Engineering school at one of those kinda of schools anyway. |
Cygnatti
01.23.14 | "lol, first of all a 1400 was fucking 96th percentile that year."
I only took one SAT and didn't study for shit about it and got like 1850. my older brother got like 2200 tho.
wait a second, like 6 years ago or something, the SAT didn't have a writing portion (I think?) and the highest score you could get was 1600 so maybe that was around when you took it. |
Hyperion1001
01.23.14 | yeah there is a new scale
1600 used to be perfect, now with writing its 2400
i got a 1380 without writing and a 2180 with writing, which sucks a bit cause they dont usually care writing and thats the only thing i got a perfect on |
1992
01.23.14 | lol hyp, that's probably gonna be the case with me (taking them next saturday), im likely to bomb the living shit out of math |
Hyperion1001
01.23.14 | yeah i suck dick at math so that hurt my overall score.
i got a 32 on the ACT as well, if youre better at one type of test taking then the other the ACT is usually more balanced about showing youre capability without penalizing you for being better in one area than another |
Blind
01.23.14 | edit: idk what's up with the formatting; the br syntax shit isn't working and it won't go back to
paragraphs sorry dudes
"when they say they want a 'well-rounded' student"
they don't want well-rounded students, they want a well-rounded student body. they want a body
filled with a variety of people who are all good at and passionate about what they do. it's much
better to highlight something unique in your application than to talk about how you're a well-
rounded jack of all trades.
also, what Ignimbrite said about a lot of the admissions decisions coming down to luck with the
top-tier schools is true. when the admissions staff is sifting through thousands of applications
with 2250+ sat scores, 5s on 10 AP tests, a community college transcript, research experience, etc.
how do you really differentiate between them? they have many more admissible applicants than they do
spots for an incoming class. i'm not saying they throw their hands up and pick names out of a hat,
but decisions are going to come down to things like whether or not your essays resonate with the
particular staff member reviewing your application. i know this is anecdotal, but i was rejected
from UC San Diego but accepted to NYU, which is a comparable school. I was rejected from Cornell,
waitlisted at UChicago, and accepted to Columbia; three comparable universities with three very
different responses. it's not like i sent a radically different application to each, and i doubt
that each school is looking for a radically different personality. it likely came down to somebody
at Columbia admissions finding my essays interesting, somebody at Cornell finding them plain, and
somebody and UChicago finding them good but not as good as others they'd read.
finally, a lot of college things are universal. even if you don't go to what was your dream
school, there's gonna be a ton of new shit (and a lot of the same stuff that you'd have liked about
Virginia) to love to do wherever you end up |
SkaCali1991
01.23.14 | kmace- yeah it like being passionate about two different worlds, it ought to be interesting
ThirtySixChambers- Im sad but not too sad because the other schools here are amazing too, its just at UVA i was already taking classes and i wanted to continue them...but always next year. good luck with the comp. sci.
Blind- Its true, i may have tried too hard to show them that i can do anything, maybe i should have just focused on school a little more than different clubs/activities etc...thats not to say that i shouldnt do any of those just have laid off them a little more....I play the harp and i thought with that i couldve had a unique foot-in, but maybe i shouldnt have relied on that so much either. I think i got too confident that i would get in and getting denied was definately a wake up call that i probably needed. And thats right different schools are looking for dfferent things and i will end up where i should end up. thanks for the insight
|
GnarlyShillelagh
01.23.14 | 4.1 gpa?? that's on a 5.0 scale so that's not even that great
on the real tho college apps are a crapshoot don't worry about it
one of the homies got a perfect gpa 2400 on the sat 15+ AP tests + an iB diploma loads of volunteer work and sports and got rejected by stanford
you didn't do anything wrong it just happens like that sorry bruh |
