Still Crazy After All These Years

I've been around (and not around) for one whole decade (well its a few days away, but I'll rprobably forget about it on the actual day).

Incase any of you folks hadn't been briefed, sputnikmusic started out as a
gloriously hackable subforum on musicianforums.com. From there, sputnikmusic the
website was launched, partially as a means of getting away from what was at the
time considered the potentially litigious business of online music tablature.

At the launch of the website, it was designed as a hybrid staff/community music
website, a state which has more or less remained true. Though at the start the site
was very much a poor man's rateyourmusic.com, along the line the staff tried to
push the site towards a higher degree of professionalism with moves such as
reviews being featured on metacritic, staff visiting gigs and festivals etc.

While you can debate the success of sputnikmusic's business strategy, what is
undoubtedly clear is the shift in musical tastes of the site. While years ago the
indie/alternative, hip-hop and electronic music type genres had very small
collectives of devoted individuals; the site's primary musical currency was rock and
metal with a mainstream or gateway music bias. To give you an idea, bands like
Katatonia were on the fringes of the site's attention, and a review of someone like
Nick Drake would be a musical discovery for the vast majority of the website.

A second major trend has been in the writing style of the vast majority of reviews.
Where initially track by tracks were considered a valid review method, even by
review veterans; today the mere sight of one results in the unnamed masses
flocking to disapprove of the review. The style of reviews has largely homogenised
over time, towards a style that might cynically be described as an application for a
pitchfork staff position. In a more positive sense, reviews today are of higher
standard and greater consistency than what was commonplace years ago. Part of
me misses the days of reviews commonly being several thousand words in length,
an overabundance of personal pronouns in reviews, and the old lengthy history of a
band in place of an actual introduction.

But some things remain the same, the constant decrying of the crumbling userbase,
the circle jerk lists, the reviews with thousands of comments functioning as a
chatroom, and thankfully still the ability to discover new and interesting music. So
despite its awkward makeup and ever present faults, sputnikmusic still has its
charms and has led to a vast number of musical discoveries for me and I'm sure for
many others. List is thus some personal favourite albums, not necessarily perfect,
but key albums in the evolution of my tastes over the years.
