| This Is Bad...
So my two favourite record stores in Vancouver are both far enough
away from me that I can avoid the temptation to drop serious wads of
cash pretty well. However, while walking on Main St. today, which I live
2 blocks from, I found an absolutely amazing place. It's called Neptoon
Records and CDs and they have such a great selection of new and old
vinyl, and they also do tour posters and sell tickets to lots of good
shows. I bought one record and then ran before I had to take out a
second mortgage, but knowing that I live less than a five-minute walk
from this place is gonna test my restraint. List is recent acquisitions: | 10 | | Shugo Tokumaru In Focus?
The one thing I bought there before running for the sake of my bank account. Clear
vinyl, 1 of 1000 limited edition. | 9 | | White Lung Sorry
I bought my ticket to see White Lung there. It was such a great show. 4 bands
for $10 (local show) and it was at an art gallery in the downtown east side (1 East
Hastings, pretty legit). The drummer broke her bass drum on the second song, so
she overturned the floor tom and used the bottom side as a kick for the remainder
of the set, played the rest of the songs with no toms and a shitty sounding bass
drum. True punk rock. Such a great show, I probably sweated off 5 pounds. | 8 | | Elliott Smith Figure 8
2 x 180 gram LP with lyrics sheet mmmmmm. Love this album. | 7 | | Hop Along Get Disowned
Christmas present/AOTY 2012 | 6 | | Raein Sulla linea d'orizzonte tra questa mia vita e que
Purchased at super legit show in the back of a dingy record store in the dowtown
east side. They played on the floor of a small room, packed over capacity with less
than a hundred people. Their first ever show in Canada, real stuff. | 5 | | Menomena Friend and Foe
I recently saw them at the Biltmore and, and the merch table, had a wide range of
options. I was tempted to go with the new one, and briefly tempted to go for
Mines, but in the end I settled for Friend and Foe. It's my favourite album of theirs,
and the artwork comes with this rotating wheel thing that slightly changes the
cover, too good. | 4 | | In Medias Res It Was Warm and Sunny When We First Set Out
Man, here's what happened. I went to see Sparta at the Biltmore a couple of
weeks ago (they were so damn great) and this local band was opening for them.
Now, granted, I was pretty fucking stoned, but their live show blew my mind. Their
sound was huge. I said I wasn't going to buy vinyl that night, but their set was
too good, so I picked this up. Truth is, the record's just ok. It's kind of frustrating
because it feels like it could be so great at times but something is just missing. I
regret buying this sort of, but oh well. I mean it's 180 gram so theoretically it
should sound amazing, but "just ok" on 180 gram is still "just ok." | 3 | | Kishi Bashi 151a
One of the best live shows I have ever seen, and I wasn't on any drugs or drunk at
all. This guy just smashes it. Looped vocals, samples, insane violin lines (this guy is
a virtuoso), looped violin parts, incredible vocals, man, this guy just smashes it live.
I already liked the record, but seeing him live was enough to make me love it.
Purchased, of course. White vinyl, yeeee. | 2 | | Low C'Mon
I want I Could Live in Hope but it is $35. Things We Lost in the Fire occasionally
pops up at Audiopile on Commercial Dr., but it's usually at least $25. | 1 | | Brian Eno Ambient 1: Music For Airports
Mint condition 1978 pressing for $20. Zulu Records on West 4th Ave., how I love
you so. The woman who rang me up was actually gutted that I had bought this,
she was hoping to save it for herself. I love that I own this, go me. | |
