As pointless and boring as the earliest Sunn O))) releases are is exactly how invigorating and mesmerizing they'd become at their peak. Candlewolff Ov Thee Golden Chalice, one of the last recorded Peel sessions, is reminiscent of their earliest work in composition but succeeds where the others didn't due to one simple notion: the repetitive drone and largely frozen songwriting achieves what it's going for this time, which is a creepy, unsettling atmosphere and a prolonged uneasiness. Whether that's just the power of suggestion by that album cover (totally awesome) is unbeknownst to myself, but the deed is done either way.
