Overview:
This final studio release by Pantera, is, in the words of guitarist Dimebag Darrell (R.I.P.) "a best of in its own right." Really, this album is an eclectic mix of the different sides of Pantera that preceded it. When one hears a doupble bass drum, or a screming harmonic on guitar, you can bet that the player has heard his or her share of Pantera. This is a very overlooked album by some great musicians, and is just as good as their classic releases.
Hell Bound
The first track opens with some good sound production with dime's guitars, as well as some double vocal tracking by Phil Anselmo. You can tell the artistic shift that was made with this song in Pantera. 3.5/5
Goddamn Electric
One of my favorite Pantera songs, i think that the catchy part in this song isnt necessarily the tune, but the 'tribute to metal lyrics'
" Your trust is in whiskey
and weed and Black Sabbath"
and then
"Your trust is in whiskey
and weed and Slayer"
In fact, this is one of Panteras most interesting songs because it was recorded backstage at Ozzfest with Kerry King, (the guitarist of Slayer) doing backing guitars on the outro. 4/5
Yesterday Dont Mean ***
Sounds like a quickly recorded "sound check riff" its still an ok song, again the part that stands out most is Phils vocal work. 3/5
Youve Got To Belong To It
When i first heard this song, within the first 20 seconds, the guitar part had me mesmerized. A real break from traditional guitar playing, even among metal. The lyrics are good as well. 3.5/5
Revolution is My Name
Another one of my faveorite Pantera songs, this one has probably one of the coolest guitar riffs ive ever heard. It made me almost shiver when i first heard it. 5/5
Death Rattle
Unfourtuneatly, this song seems like it was slapped together. Not really steller playing, until the chorus. The drumming could be better on the verse, still a good song worth a listen. Especially for the awsome bridge/breakdown.4/5
W'ell Grind THat Axe For A Long Time
A good song, not that great, it actually sounds better when your not totally awake. ITs not a bad song though, i would be happy if I could write one half as good.....3.5/5
Uplift
One of my faveorites from this album, it really makes you want to turn the volume up to 11 when Phil is screaming with just the drums in the background. Good solo too. 5/5
It Makes Them Disappear
When i first heard this song, i was really freaked out, it sounded like nothing they have ever done before, but then i discovered after the intro that they really did a good job of blending experimental guitar effects with awsome double tracked vocals and classic pantera riffs. Play this one for your grandmother.....4.5/5
I'll Cast A Shadow
Ahh yes, a true Pantera epic. This song really shows that Phil was getting ready to change musically. When you listen to this song after hearing "Heresy" from Cowboys from hell, you really can tell the band has grown. 5/5
Well, all in all this album gets a 4 and a half. Its great, mind blowing, but not 'classic'.
