Review Summary: I've got my heart set on everywhere but here/ I'm staring down myself, counting up the years.

The unfortunate thing with a band like OneRepublic is, they will probably never get to the height that they want. As good as “Stop and Stare” and some other songs on Dreaming Out Loud are, none of them will surpass the success of “Apologize”. “Apologize” is mixture of just plain pop, with chunky R&B beats and white boy swooning courtesy of Ryan Tedder. The song contained a somewhat depressing atmosphere, probably brought on by the violins, and all of these things together made one of the most successful songs of 2007.

And that is why Dreaming Out Loud is disappointing in each and every possible way.

This is not to say that there are no other good songs on the album, just nothing to the calibre of "Apologize". “Say (All I Need)” is an excellent track, building up from a swarm of low pitched electronic sounding vocals to a vocal-led barrage of beauty, with Maroon 5-esqe falsettos and white boy R&B crooning. “Stop and Stare” is another huge standout on Dreaming Out Loud, taking the roll of the official ‘rock’ ballad, the song takes advantage of Ryan Tedder’s strongest vocal performance on the entire album, with the guitars carefully withering along the surface of Ryan’s enduring vocals. However, after these few tracks, the album drops down to an astounding low and just gets too boring to take. “Goodbye, Apathy” tries to be musically hypnotic, but just dulls away and ruins a perfectly effective piano line. “Tyrant” is another song that has a catchy piano line in the verse and some decent guitar riffing in the chorus, but the song falls flat on its face, as it tries to be heavier than the rest of the album, and it just sounds completely forced and awkward on this album.

Troublingly enough, the rest of the album fails in a similar way in which “Goodbye, Apathy” does, they’re all just way too boring or way too bland to succeed. Ryan Tedder is a decent songwriter, and sometimes he puts together some real excellent songs, but on here he tends to make boring songs that try to be catchy pop songs that have a (small) rock influence while avoiding the main thing that makes OneRepublic successful; Ryan Tedder’s R&B influenced voice. If anyone were to get Dreaming Out Loud, then I’d have to say it’d be pop fans just looking for catchy music, because a lot of the stuff here is fairly catchy. If you really aren’t into pop rock tingled with some R&B influences, then you should avoid this album at all costs.

Recommended Tracks:
“Apologize”
“Say (All I Need)”
“Stop and Stare”

And that is why Dreaming Out Loud is disappointing in each and every way possible.

Put 'possible' before 'way'.
This is not saying that there are no other songs on the album that are good, but nothing matching up to the catchiness and excellence of “Apologize”.

More like 'This is not to say that there are no other good songs on the album, just nothing to the calibre of 'Apologize'.
building up from a swarm of low pitched electronic sounding vocals to a vocal-led barrage of beauty, Maroon 5-esqe falsettos and white boy R&B crooning all.

What's with the 'all'? Doesn't make sense.
“Tyrant” is another song that has a catchy piano line, but falls flat in a completely different “Goodbye, Apathy”, as it tries to be heavier

Yeah so I think you missed a bunch of stuff after 'different'.
most of the rest of the album fails in a similar way that “Goodbye, Apathy” does

Sentence fails as well. 'most of the rest' sounds terrible, and your use of 'that' in this sentence doesn't work well.
but on here he tends to make boring songs that try to be catchy pop songs that try to have a (small) rock influence while avoiding the main thing that makes OneRepublic successful; Ryan Tedder’s R&B influenced voice

Maybe rewrite this so it doesn't repeat 'that try to' 100 million times.

Very good review Maxy Boy... I've been meaning to give this a listen for a while now and I get a pretty clear picture of what it will contain from reading your review. A positive vote from me.

However, I wouldn't put your life savings on them being a one-hit wonder... With Tedder's songwriting abilities hitting the top of the charts in the hands of others, he could still have a pretty good grasp of what will suit his band better now. Their next album will indeed be an interesting one for that reason.

Breaking worldwide on the back of smash hit 'Apologize', OneRepublic immediately put themselves near the top of the pop-rock heap with the sufficiently consistent 'Dreaming Out Loud'. As with similar artists, some songs do stray into blandness, and that is not helped here by some overlength. However, lead singer Ryan Tedder's above-average lyrics and a real sense of musical & production ambition (which reminds of genre-leading Coldplay) means that this is a rather promising debut. Recommended Tracks: Apologize, Stop and Stare & All We Are.

I mean the videos, lmao. I haven't been a fan of their music, but the videos (especially the original for Apologize) was great. This Message Edited On 11.18.08

^^6 1-2 to the mother fucking 3. The All Ends cover of Apologize is pretty sweet as well. Nice to see this song attracting the Swedes/ In Flames relatives.

I pretty much agreed with you in the review.

Ryan Tedder is a decent songwriter, but he writes pop songs, and nothing more. He can't stretch that out for an album.

^^^ Agreed Max... But in the review, your comment was: "they are, amongst others, one-hit wonders." That was the comment I was taking you up on... Not on whether or not they would ever release a classic album.
