Review Summary: The man that was called a "God Like Genius" and ex- "Smiths" guitarist delivers.
Johnny Marr is best known for his work as guitarist in " The Smiths" but he's so much more than just that.
After "The Smiths" he then played guitar in indie bands such as "Modest Mouse" and "The Cribs". It's about time he takes the soptlight and steps out front and this album does just that.
Vocal wise he's pretty decent. His vocals can not be compared to his "The Smiths" partner Morrissey but are pretty solid despite that. I would say his vocal style could be comparable to the likes of "Jesus and Mary Chain" "Black Rebel MotorCycle Club" and "The Stokes". His lyrics a songwriting skills are excellent. His lyrics express emotion and flow pretty well.
That brings us to his secret weapon. That weapon being his axe also called guitar. It's melodic and haunting, The reason why he won "The God-Like Genius" award. He can make sounds with his guitar that mere men and/or women could only dream of. In this album his guitar jangles, wails and rocks. That post-punk style is evident as is funk, reggee and soul. It is a force to be reckoned with and an inspiration to thousands that wish to follow in his footsteps.
In my opinion the best songs is "Say Demesne". The guitair is nothing short of brilliant and it generates emotion. Besides that it's simply beautiful.
While this album can not be compared to "The Smiths"..... The boy has done good and can take charge and carry the burden of being a front man. Good Job Johnny, Good Job. You really are a God-like genius whatever that may be.
