Review Summary: Don't let this review make you fool, because the reviewer may be fool too

For my comeback to sputnikmusic I wanted to review something that has not much exposure.

Jinjer is a Ukrainian band formed in 2009. They went through several changes in the band's lineup and I've been stable since the release of their 3rd full length ''King of everything''. Their sound is pretty unique since it's female fronted extreme metal band with jazzy incluences. Their lead singer, Tatiana Shmailyuk, has an impressive range from a solid clean voice reminiscent of Gwen stefany of No Doubt to freaky super low growl.

Micro is actually a 5 song EP that could be a great introduction to the Jinjer sound. The opener ''APE'' is a groovy hard hitting number. It really shows how the bass is an important part of their sound. Bassist Eugene Kostyuk is the star of the band in my opinion. Drummer Vladislav Ulasevich show is impressive ability at groovy through an heavy song. His playing kinda reminds me of Thomas Haake from Meshuggah mixed with Martin Lopez (ex-opeth). Talking of grooves, The opening of ''Dreadful moments'' and the middle part of ''Perennial'' are great example of this band can groove and switch from super heavy to smooth. You can also hear the Gojira influences.

The songs are not very long, but you can go through a lot of mood changes in the same song. ''Teacher, Teacher'' stands out as one the slowest song on the album with mostly clean singing. The chorus is the catchiest of the album while Tatiana sings catchy lines like ''Don't let their school make a fool of you, Because the teachers may be fools too''.
.
The guitar player Roman Ibramkhalilov is the underdog of the band. His playing is interesting and solid. He doesn't play flashy leads, but his playing serves the music. Last song is ''Micro'' which is an instrumental bass and drum jam.

So, If you like bands like Meshuggah or Gojira, groovy metal and impressive vocal, Jinjer is a band to look for.

My only complaint would be that it's actually only 4 true songs.

Great band, Tati is bae and agreed the bassist is awesome.

Review is a bit short man, you say Eugene is the star of the band, expand on that and tell us why. Would just say expand more on your ideas. Structure of this is a bit off too. Read some staff reviews on here to get a better understanding of how to structure a review.

Enjoyable EP, but this band should focus more on the stuff that isn't just plain metalcore. They usually have good ideas on the intros or outros and then go full on djent-core. Tatiana is talented, but the songs don't do it for me

those guitar riffs are so lame. It's just half-assed djenting but it's never loud or booming enough to fill up space and just feels awkward.

Hmmmm, the vocals sound so painfully watered down live...

And plain metalcore is so boring...

Pisces is a masterpiece of a song, but the rest of that album was mostly boring. This EP is a step in the right direction, it's a lot more dynamic and playing more to the band's strengths. It's pretty damn good and yeah, they slay live that's for sure.

I would like this band a lot if they were to focus on the more interesting bits of their music and mostly do away with the really shallow core stuff

Good to hear it Groundking - I'll be seeing them early October for their first shows out here in Western Canada and I wasn't sure what to expect.
